The one thing that i like of this chapter is that Renji was pragmatic, 0% talk, 100% punishment :tup:
I also like the fact that his bankai has become similar in nature to Ichigo’s bankai, in that both are actually small and more suited to allow them use their full power at close/long range if they want to.
The real reason he won was he didn’t explain anything. Notice how the wrestling homey mentioned his ability with James this chapter…then died. I’m just saying, mentioning your powers is akin to taking off dat akatsuki cloak.

I was reading the Mangastream version when I saw a comment that someone made saying Renji (like Ichigo) cheated to get his Bankai. I don’t quite think that is how it happened, but I do remember Renji rushing to achieve Bankai to help save Rukia. That alone could give the impression that he didn’t achieve full Bankai when using what we know then as a callback.
Unless Kubo keeps pulling this out of his ass for the final arc, I don’t think will be too much of a problem. The initial rule-set in place hasn’t changed too much, we know Zanpakuto spirits are independent personalities who may not get along with their wielders. We know that this can cause friction for Shinigami who want to achieve Bankai, and those who want to or are even capable of mastering it.
It’s just bullshit when the “full-name” thing applies to people who already have their Bankai and have seemingly mastered it. So far not every power-up has been like that: Soifon said “fuck it” to hers and stuck to mastering other techniques, only using her Bankai as a last ditch effort. Dog boy gave up his heart/soul to achieve his power-up, and it could’ve gotten him killed in the process. Zaraki had a some shitty psychological block, but I’m not getting into that one…
