BLAZBLUE: Q&A For newcomers (PLEASE POST/CHECK HERE BEFORE MAKING A THREAD!)

First of all,hello everyone!
I know this area is called ‘General Strategy - BB’ but since there’s no other BB forum, might as well post here.

So I just bough CT a few days ago and started playing it with some friends. Reason I bought CT is that i own no ps3 or 360, so im stuck to my computer.
Only Beat 'em Up i played a little more serious (if you can even call it that) is Touhou 12.3 Hisoutensoku.

So now I’m looking into the competitive scene and I see all these CS and even CSII threads/videos and I’m like…did I just waste 30bucks?
(Well i LOVE the story so I didnt,but eh…)
Is there any way to even remotely keep up with the release of newer BB games without buying a ps3/360? Or will I forever be stuck buying the ‘newest’ title a year later? :S

CS1 is on the Xbox360 and PS3 only, so far at least, I suppose it’s possible they will release it for the PC, but I wouldn’t expect it anytime soon. As far as CS2 is concerned, right now it is only out for Japanese arcades, but its supposed to be a free balance patch for CS1. Also, as far as there being “no other BB forum” if you want to talk BB, you would be better off going to dustloop, the SRK BlazBlue section is barren and hardly ever gets any traffic.

are there any character specific forums out there for BBCS2 because im having a hard time finding any and what is up with the crazy number saying for button imputs in this game because i don’t understand it and it’s pretty damn frustrating when im trying to read up on on combos that are posted up on youtube.

Head over to Dustloop.com and you’ll get all the information you could ever need, you’ll also get any questions you have answered much faster than here imo.

The number notation system is pretty simple to get, look at the standard numpad on a keyboard. 5 is neutral, 6 is forward, and 2 is down etc. So 623D is SRK-motion Drive button.

so i just picked this game up today…
i basically feel like the first time i played world warrior, lol. so i’ll be doing a ton of reading.

Learn and remember all of the system mechanics. It takes a good while to get used to so don’t rush it.

is there no way to set the dummy to have max life and recover life? like it is in mission mode?

also just doing simple air combo strings…the timing is so different than mvc IMO. i like this game a lot tho from what little i’ve played of it. i’m using tsubaki if it matters. gonna try out rachel, platinum, makoto and the wolf guy later.

You’re talking about training mode right? If so, yes the dummy can be set to recover life automatically. Check the menu where both character’s stamina levels are. I believe it’s there. Have you learned the System mechanics for the game?

So are there people still playing this game online on EU xbl or is it dead?

I just downloaded Valk, Mak, and Plat, plus all the unlimiteds. But. Shit isn’t showing up on my character select screen. I’ve tried in Training and Versus. I’ve turned off the machine and turned it back on. I have the NA edition of CS, the CSII update, and (ostensibly) the NA dlc. Still nothing. Anyone else had this problem? Is there a lever I’m not pulling? I assumed that shit would just BE there, which assumption isn’t terribly unreasonable considering I bought it.

What the hell? I want my Lambda/Nu unlimiteddddd.

I have the xbox version but i might be a little different. When you start the game it does i dlc check do you let it finish? Also look in the option and make sure that it lets you pick 1.03 update. It should also say 1.03 on the top when you play.

What does a yellow exclamation over someone’s head mean? I’m assuming they went for a throw tech and got hit or something.

Also what’s the best way to block? Is it best to hold back and hit the three buttons to like tech throws or w/e. Like is there some kind of basic option select like crouch teching in SF?

One more question. When I’m being combo’d is it bad to mash buttons to try and tech out. I kind of figured I would just piano the three buttons kind of like 3S style to make sure I tech when I can? Anyone want to kind of explain that b/c that’s the thing I’m kind of not understanding.

And also does counter (I forgot the name) use any kind of meter? I think it’s like back or forward plus AB.

Green and purple exclamation marks are techable throws. Yellow i do not remember but i do think when you are tripped or hit out a block in the air it has an exclamation mark but i do not remember but color those are. This link gives the complete explanation of throw tech mechanics. like how you can not tech a command grab unless you are in guard stun.
http://www.dustloop.com/guides/bbcs2/systemGuide/systemGuide.html#throwBreak

Do not barrier block all the time use the 3 button and back as an option select for an instant barrier block or throw tech. Because if you tech the throw too early you will be throw reject miss also you do not want to waste your barrier. Sometimes the pushback will make it harder to punish the other players mistake. Barrier use mainly to block in the air because there is a lot of moves that are air unblockable.

If you are playing online or against someone that drops many combos I tend to mash to tech out in the air. When on the ground you may want to roll forward, back so keep or delay the tech so keep that in mind when you tech. Experience against people will give an idea when and how to tech in certain scenarios. Be cause if you tech at the wrong time you make it easier for them to reset or to punish a role. Like against Tager almost never air tech when magnetized.

Counter assault uses 50 percent meter. Some counter assaults you can combo off but it can not KO. Remember you have to be in block stun to use it.

blue exclamation mark is being hit with a air unblockable move while in the air
red exclamation mark is being hit by an overhead while blocking low
yellow exclamation mark is being hit by a low attack/sweep while blocking standing

thx guys. It’s a lot more mechanics than other games lol.

Are you hittable during rolls? Or your just vulnerable after rolls?

Rolls if you look on the system guide on teching tell how many frames are invulnerable
Forward roll for example.
[]1~3F Completely invulnerable
[
]4~17F Throw invulnerable, if hit you will be in the air

18~30F Guard possible, if hit will be in crouching position
The more you play the mechanics become second nature. and you will learn the best time to use the 4 different rolls or techs. Rolls are punishable if your opponent are looking for them.
Abuse the system guide in addition to hitting up dustloop and youtube to understand your options better.
I do not remember the exact saying,
" A fool learns from his or her mistakes, a smart person learns from other peoples mistakes."

Hey guys i recently picked this game up at the super vs battle in london after watching the finals there. I was asking a guy about what character would suit me and he recomended makoto, so i got home and downloaded her and been doing some of the challenges and playing about. My question is whats the best way to learn combo’s in this game? simply doing the challenges and applying what i leant in a match? or is there a thread somewhere i can find some cool B&B’s to practice ? thanks

People will tell you different ways to learn combo with the only thing they will have in common is practice. Challenge mode is good to learn basic timing and to get a visual for practice. But not all combos in challenge mode are worth it. I do not know how practical Makoto are in challenge mode.

awesome thanks very much, im really used to SF, and marvel so i hope this game doesnt get me to out of practice.

Also, while i see these combo’s anything on blaz blue is done in numbers followed by the command, i take it the numbers relate to directions but i cant work out what they mean :S like “2A” for example i realise its a light attack, but whats the 2 stand for. Thanks
