I always thought the issue was that, compared to a lot of the other Fighting Games that are developed, the Capcom fighters are made with the 360 in mind and ported over. Like, I was under the impression that since the primary console in Japan and that is the PS3, that that was why the primarily used versions of Blazblue, P4A, KOFXIII, and Tekken are the PS3 versions. As to why the primarily used versions of the NRS fighters like MK9 and Injustice are the PS3 versions? That I can’t answer.
I can understand why MAYBE MvC3 was made with the 360 in mind, but why would “Capcom fighters” in general be that way? Unless they just realize that people over here are more likely to entertain their boring games?
Anyway, it’s true that BB doesn’t put anything like the strain on a system that Marvel does, but that’s because Marvel has 3+ characters on the screen half the damn time.
As far as I know, that’s correct. 360 has slightly better hardware, Capcom sells a lot more copies on 360, and they want to push the limits of it. It’s just a really bad idea to make a game you know will be played competitively, and not test it for frame drops/lag on every relevant console.
I’m fairly certain it wouldn’t matter how many BB characters and effects you have on the screen at the same time, it would never create any problems, because BB uses simple 2D sprites and physics, while UMvC3 uses a 3D graphics engine and 3D physics modified for 2D. It’s a huge resource hog.
Yeah…it’s kind of a dumb change, and I’m really going to miss being able to combo into it. Plus, it already kinda could be a counter one if you needed it to be, too.
Strong characters: Tao, Litchi, Hakumen, Hazama, Jin
Characters that have to do work: Izayoi, Amane
Balanced Characters: Everyone else.
And you can even make a case for putting Izayoi in the balanced bucket. Hakumen is pretty retarded though, Litchi, Hazama and Jin just do too much damage, and Tao is still Tao.
Izayoi’s oddly being seen as stronger as time goes on. And well, the consensus is Azrael’s pretty strong gameplay wise, and I believe Mu’s hovering at about an A right now.
I don’t really think there’s anything that odd about it - she’s a weird, complicated character, not some Ragna/Jin “my drive is just another attack” cop out, and complicated, weird characters take a long time for people to figure out.
Everyone says Azrael does lots of damage, but he doesn’t really seem to do that much more than any of the other high-ranked characters and they all have far nastier tricks than he does. I see no reason to count him in the “strong” tier. And “A” is pretty much where the “balanced” line IS, so Mu being “A Tier” means she’s in with most of the cast.
How is this a “cop out?” Drives as attacks is how they should be functioning. Do Tsubaki and Izayoi really need an entire button dedicated to charging a gauge or mode changing?
Livewire said Azrael was “strong gameplay-wise,” not that he does lots of damage. But he’s still consistently doing 3K+ off of almost any hit after weakpoints. Plus he’s got full-screen corner carry, crossups in the corner, unblockable setups, and a pretty decent set of defensive options.
Because it kinda defeats the point of having a drive? Why have a button called “drive” instead of a button called “Really good attack” if it’s just going to be another attack button? And yes, you do need “an entire button” devoted to charging a gauge AND using it. Unless you have some super brilliant idea like “Oh, you ALWAYS use your hard earned charge once you have it.” How about no? Sounds like you don’t really understand how either character works if that’s how you think their drives operate.
What about Rachel? What about Tao? What about Hazama? Hell, what about Carl, Relius, Litchi, Platinum, Valk etc? All these characters have a drive that does SOMETHING other than just “Oh, I do an sword slash/punch/whatever, and the attack has some special properties if it hits”. Characters with a 4th attack button are the lazy designs in BB.
But lots of the cast has that stuff, so that’s not enough to put him into top tier. He doesn’t have any strong movement options, his mixup is strictly average, his “unblockable setups” require applying multiple weakpoints, etc. You’ll note - I’m not saying he’s bad. I’m just saying he doesn’t have anything that makes him stand out from the pack the way the characters people generally cite as “top tier” do. Heck, some of those top tier characters match his damage output without even having to apply weakpoints.
Yeah, over half of those character’s Drives you mentioned are attacks, genius. Carl/Relius? D attacks with the puppets. Litchi? D does various attacks where the staff is placed afterwards. Hazama? Chain attacks in various directions. Tao? Does an attack that charges forward at various angles. Etc., etc. Other than Izayoi and Tsubaki, the only characters that don’t have multiple attacks out of Drive (and I’m counting the parries as attacks) are Rachel–who technically still gets eight different functions out of her Drive “normals” anyway–and Valk, who admittedly still suffers the same design problem as Izayoi, but at least gets compensated with perhaps the second-best mobility in the game and more extra normals than Gain Art has.
Tsubaki and Izayoi using the D button to use powered up version of their specials is great and all. But that doesn’t mean Tsubaki needs an entire button dedicated to charging up a gauge, with each “version” charging it in negligibly-different fashion. Especially when she doesn’t get nearly as good of a trade-off for losing potential normals, and Bullet, Amane, and Tager are already doing the sensible thing and charging their stuff with a special move, anyway. Chronophantasma was the perfect time for Install to get an overhaul the same way that Arakune’s Curse did. She could still keep the manual charge as a special move, but hitting the opponent with D normals could earn charge as well, and using enhanced specials would remain the same. And before you say this nullifies the whole point of Install, note she already got a move that builds gauge on hit anyway. Plus, Bullet and Amane can do both; why not Tsubaki?
I’ll admit to not really having an idea of how to revamp Izayoi and still keep her general design, since my Tsubaki example borrows ideas from Scarlet Justice, making the former somewhat redundant. But having a button with only one function is just a waste; mode-changing could just be a special, like Face Lift.
When you turn Drives into things like Scarlet Justice and Install, you get Injustice traits. And nobody wants that.
Clearly you’re not understanding my point. There’s a difference between characters whose drives serve a function AS WELL as attacking; Hazama’s chains are not primarily an attack, and certainly not in the sense of “If I gave this character another 4 normals, it’d look just like their drive.” That’s the problem with Ragna/Jin/Makoto and a couple of others. They basically just have a couple more normals than the rest of the cast, which doesn’t really make them very interesting. But if you think Valk “suffers” from any sort of problem regarding his drive, I think there’s not really any common ground here.
I mean, seriously. Stop attacking and think about what you’re saying. If you count every character in the game who has attacks that use their drive button, your whole argument about Tsubaki and Izayoi goes out the window because they already use that button for…attacking. Go figure. Neither character actually suffers from what you accuse them of - namely “just using the button for charging/changing modes” as in both cases, it determines how they utilize the charges in question.
I know nothing about Injustice, so talking about “traits” there just makes me scratch my head. That said, I -agree- they could do more things with Tsubaki’s D button, but since they seem to be scared of making her D button actually good, there’s not much that you can really argue for. That said, I don’t think Bullet (still the worst design out of the entire new cast) and Amane are particularly good examples of how to go about it. Amane’s drive is so indifferent that it doesn’t even show up in half his matches. And anyway, again, I like the VARIETY of drives here, so having everyone charge their random dingus meter using a special is just as bad as having everyone use their button exclusively for charging.
The amount of hatred in your post makes it seem like you have some sort of weird emotional investment in Ragna not being considered boring.
