Nobody likes being profiled. We, as an individualistic society, like to emphasize our uniqueness. And it’s understandable to get upset when others use our demographics to determine how we should be treated.
But is profiling wrong? When you’re the one who’s trying to sift through hundreds and thousands of people it’s hard not to turn to profiling to understand who will buy your product (that junk mail doesn’t just magically appear in your mailbox for no reason), be an insurance risk (face it, statistically speaking your penis is a liability when it’s behind the wheel), or commit a crime. I’m not saying the cop in this story is necessarily right, but trying to approach the situation from their point of view through a bit of empathy presents some other considerations.
We often hear stories like this in the media because they know a good ‘profiling gone wrong’ story will get them views or hits. But it makes me wonder, what about all the times ‘profiling goes right’? It seems there has to be some great utility to profiling or else so many agencies wouldn’t use it. But at the end of the day profiling is a type of discrimination, as you’re ultimately treating a certain group of people differently simply for being in that group.
Is that ever justifiable? We can’t simply look at it and say “it’s discrimination, so it’s wrong”. The implications of that logic would lead to a lot of laws being changed. Not to mention that if profiling is getting dangerous people off the street and in the long term saving lives and property, is that not worth our momentary (although often repeated) discomfort and annoyance?
Is it really discrimination when you have statistics to back you up? For example, if group A is 10 times more likely to commit a crime than group B, shouldn’t cops detain people in group A 10 times more often than those in group B? That’s how insurance companies get away with giving us all different rates. It’s not discrimination, it’s statistics and probability, things which are heavily endorsed scientifically. Should we just ignore probability? That doesn’t seem very logical as it can certainly help us to be more efficient in completing tasks.
As someone who works in mental health I use a lot of statistics, and sometimes it’s even used to formulate treatment plans. If I know a certain treatment tends to have a more positive outcome with certain demographics is it discriminatory to use that information when treating people from that demographic? Pretty much all health treatment is based off statistics. When your doctor prescribes you something it’s because statistically that drug at that dose has improved the symptoms of enough people like you to be seen as a viable treatment (even though you as a person and your exact condition is utterly and completely unique).
I’m not trying to necessarily take a side here, just bring up some questions. For me the ethics of profiling, especially when back by statistics, is a difficult topic. It’s easy to let our emotions go wild and say ‘well duh, it’s wrong cause it makes me feel bad!’, but I’d like to push this discussion a bit deeper than that.
