I agree with you, but here is some food for thought…is that any different than a West Islander from Japan? Being stereotypical, I almost feel as though he could be relabeled ‘Yellow Dragon’, and keep the EXACT same mythos with dragons replacing panthers, the isolationism…well being the same, etc etc etc.
I feel twisted though when I see black comic book characters. Going beyond African != African American - I think back to Milestone comics where - while racially balanced - they made black people look BAD - inadvertently (they were trying for the opposite). Last time I saw Luke Cage - he was rocking braids - and it was like - they were trying to make him cool, but it felt more like “A white guy trying to make a black guy cool” and doing that via ‘hairstyle’. I’m not going to pretend to be a comic geek, I’m REAL retired, I just Wiki shit every like 3-4 months these days - but I have yet to see a black hero that didn’t come off as a caricature or a failed attempt at capturing the black experience. I think some of it is them trying to capture it (black experience) - but its not something that’s ‘good story telling’ setup or material. On the flipside though, ignoring those items/things reduces the characters to a palette swap. Do I have a solution to this - no. I think doing things such as ‘black’ King Pin are a step in the right direction - where the character traits aren’t race specific, but the actor chosen can bring them to life in a respectful way.
I mean its a stretch, but Prof X could be played by Denzel Washington - not because of name, but he has the acting chops and personality, the facial expressions - to bring him to life in a positive and memorable way. Mike Duncan? He would have been a GREAT Juggernaut - his natural charisma would have carried the role PERFECTLY. I’m not tyring to waste a bunch of times thinking of roles to ‘reverse’ per say, just trying to illustrate that with somehting like FF, J-Storm COULD be played by a black actor, if they can STAMP the role with personality. I like MJ as an actor, but I don’t think he could carry J-Storm in the way to STAMP the role. K.C. Collins would IMO do a better job.
I am very secure in my nerdery and masturbation, thank you.
It’s not that they have to be in order to do it. It’s that they are, and they do it.
Although being the secure nerd that I am, I tend to masturbate to more assertive, capable women, because really, in evolutionary terms you want to masturbate to someone who would be fit to raise your child.
For example: someone with the brain of Marie Curie and the voluptuous, non-irradiated* body of Christina Hendricks.
They should just divide all comics and movies into separate but more or less equal versions for different demographics. Like you can have an all white X-men, an all black X-men, an all Latino X-men, an all male X-men, and an all female X-men. An all female X-men would be amazing, with bossy female Cyclops and butch female Wolverine fighting it out to see who gets to be Jean’s lesbian lover. Not to mention the title would be ironic.
It would start a whole new level of arguing in nerd-dom. Could white Storm take out black Storm? Who is gayer? The Green Lantern from the all male universe or the the Green Lantern from the all female universe? What would you name all male Wonder Woman?
Now we can be diverse and yet be culturally xenophobic. It’s like having your cake and eating it too!
Johnny Storm is far and away the least important member of the fantastic four IMO. He’s like Guy Gardner but without being funny or interesting.
They need to find a better actress to play Sue than that girls chick. Preferably someone who actually has curves unlike the one that is rumored.
Get a guy who has chemistry with the Sue actress and can pull off workaholic feel genius.
Ben is gonna be covered up in fake rocks most of the time so you need a guy who can deliver a line to make up for how hard it’ll be to read the things face for emotions.
You can get anyone to play Johnny, he never does anything important and usually makes shit harder for the rest of the team. It’s no wonder Marvel keeps killing and replacing him.
Don’t hate Johnny but it’s not like he’s important enough to be salty about.
But to that degree? I mean I have a mixed friend who truly looks white. Like his Dad’s genes were completely ineffectual during the reproductive process. Sadly he has no siblings to compare to.
I’d love if they went with Sue Storm being adopted though. Yeah I said it!
