Bison's Q&A Thread: Ask here before making new threads!

Alrighty… after failing to learn Cody quickly enough my friend told me to pick bison.

Only one problem really… I am shit at charge portioning. What should I practice in training mode?

Like Cr.lp x2 Cr.lk xx Scissor kick?

Yeah it’s weird. Bison can chain cancel his shorts off his jabs, so if you press c.lk too early, you’ll chain instead of linking, and won’t be able to special cancel off the c.lk.

There are a handful of things you could practice:
-a bnb combo you can confirm off a jab or short. c.lp x2, c.lk xx lk scissors is by far the easiest.
-a punisher combo for huge whiffs. cr.mp xx hp crusher for example.
-a punisher/combo you can do without charge. Throwing is usually the easiest.

There are other things you should practice besides combos, but that should be enough to get you started.

Very general question, will it be better in the long run to use 6 buttons instead of 8 on a stick? If so, what are the advantages of doing so?

I would recommend playing with 6 buttons. You want to be able to sit down at any arcade machine and wreck shop. Those 3P and 3K buttons are a crutch imo.

um yes. default = play anywhere.

There aren’t any arcades near me so I rarely play people offline. I thought there was more benefit to the 6 button method than just the arcade transition but will try learning it anyway.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Regarding an 8-button setup, if you want to get fancy, you can rewire your stick so that one of the face buttons is the “back” button, or whatever the equivalent is on the ps3. This will allow you to plink your jabs and standing shorts. You would have to use the right six buttons though (American configuration).

edit: spelling

Couple questions

Can anyone explain the safe PC? I heard you can do it after a sk knockdown…I am guessing if they get up and not block PC hits if blocking ure safe to c.short? How is the timing on that PC?

Also about PC crossups. I worked in the lab for a bit on getting the timing perfect off a SK, wiff a c.strong and fierce PC for cross up…then I realized they could tech. Is it possible to cross up with the heavy after a tech or you must use a EX-PC?

Yeah you can crossup fp or mp PC after a tech. I think you can do lp pc and it’ll usually whiff or hit on the tip (I forgot), so you can probably do something off of that.

What are bison’s best option selects?

l.SK defend, start from there:
-poke if they don’t have meter.
-c.LK into tic throw, or poke again into l.sk.
-c.LK into L.SK, repeat L.SK with no poke.
-FRAME TRAP, s.HP into c.LK, choice again, tic throw or wait for counter SRK.

most bison option is very fearful and simple, but you just can’t fk with l.SK at all, if distance is well manage, they just can’t jump (will trade/ultra/EX HS) or can’t move (whiff SRK/punishable move)…or only wait when they got Ultra or EX.
if they don’t attack, they just don’t have EX, when they have EX, bait it out so reset in the corner, Ultra? as long as is not Gief/Hawk, I am not so worry…most of time we can see is this bullshted speed knee press you throw out and good chip damage.

want to know better with ZONING tool bison have, c.MP or s.MK?? which one is better??

and I miss too much combo, c.lp x2 into c.lkx2 into m.SK I miss LIKE HELL LOT, most I can do is c.lp x2 into l.sk…and that is very situational.

best combo I can do is not BnB, can’t even do c.LK x3, I will do c.LP into c.LK x2 and l.SK.
-j.HP into s.HP into c.LK into L/M.SK.
-s.HP into anything/poke
overhead is kind of nightmare, I can’t combo anything from a success hit overhead j.MK, so I will do more l.SK to push them to corner, or j.MK into tic/s.HK if hit…

need learn more about zone and footsie, just can’t play well now and keep get own by anyone…

I really need help with how to beat people with high priority jump ins that just jump in jump in jump in jump in all fucking day.

Usually I can just keep my distance on them and try to air to air them when I see them jump but a lot of characters have jumps that beat all of Bisons air to airs.

If I could get a knocked down I could pressure them and not let them get up and jump but the problem is if I get a knock down I can pressure them becauase they WILL wake up SRK.

How do I stop people from jumping? It’s tearing the shit out of me. These people spend more time in the air then on the ground(or on the other side of the screen throwing fireballs)

Here’s the thing, AA is a legitimate weakness in Bison’s arsenal BUT it can be compensated for. There are ranges where cr.hp will beat out aerials cleanly you’ll have to go into practice mode and test this out. It is extremely important to learn the optimal spacing for Bison footsies. For most matchups, this means they’ll be at the edge of your st.hk. What does this do? If your opponent is on the ground, sk them. When you think they will jump, throw out a hard kick to stuff em. Bison’s ground game is unique in that he can keep opponents grounded by tossing in a few st. hk’s in block strings. So basically do this:

-Learn what ranges work for cr.hp. This is for when they jump outside of your footsies range.
-If a jumpy opponent is within st.hk range, smack him with it. if they block it, start up sk pressure and keep tossing in the hk’s
-If you get jumped in on at a poor range for you, gtfo with a teleport, dash, or slide underneath
-ex HS and DR can both be used to fuck up jumpers.

Btw safe-jumps have greatly improved my game against srk spammers, I bait that shit all day. Remember, Bison has strong footsies, so he fairs very well from a neutral position in most matchup’s, therefore it’s ok to reset a situation if you don’t wanna deal with a jump in. Above all else, watch good Bison’s and see how they handle tough jump-ins.

If I can get in to range I do usually use s.hk to keep them grounded and it usually works quite well but, I get afraid to stay so close to them because they are always a hearbeat away from throwing out a random special/ultra/sweep (sweeps are the worst cause I can’t punish them at all)

When I’m jumping against them I safe jump, it helped a lot but sometimes I can’t keep them on the ground long enough to do it.

I’ve been trying out c.hp but, it seriously sucks balls. I have to be doing it before they even jump or I get counter hit. It’s just too damn slow. The few times I’ve gotten it out it traded.

EX headstomp works for far range jump but it totally whiffs when they jump right on top of you. Not to mention I need a down charge to do it and if they keep jumping I have to stand up to block and don’t have time to charge it before they jump again.

Teleporting is definitely what I need to work on but they will jump after me about 3 or 4 times if I do.

Fucking wall of j.hk.

When I watch top level Bison they really don’t get jumped in on like this because the other player knows it’s too risky to do. I need to see… mid level Bisons I guess.

While we’re on the subject how the hell do you punish blanka balls and honda headbutts and butt splashes Also, Sweep happy players? Focus hasn’t been working because they either break the armor or the range is too short.

You need charge to punish blanka balls and headbutts, only hp and mp headbutt are punishable. You can use hk SK to punish hp PC is more strict. If you have no charge you can walk forward and mk a blocked headbutt. To beat buttslams try blocking the first one then doing nj.hk right above their head so if they follow up with another buttslam you will kick him in the head. But EX BS will beat that clean so you have to be aware of that too. You can Focus a rainbow ball and dash in for a throw or noncharge combo. But be carefull of this because the blanka player can start landing short and grabing you while you try to focus. If he is cornered and he does a blanka ball you can sweep him too.
To use FA against sweeps, use the FA to absorb the hit then dash forward and throw/tick throw/combo(c.lkx3 or 4>SK for example).

I need some advice from player that is played quite a lot with Bison. I can do BnB combos and one cross-up can you tell me some advanced combos or sumthing that you use a lot?

Is there anything I can do after slide kick > FADC?

Not really. You could 50/50 ultra 2, but that’s of questionable value.
