Birdie Matchup Thread: Mash Potato!

I’ve faced a few Laura’s today :expressionless:

WTF are you supposed to do? They all go nuts and just fling shit at the wall hoping something will stick.

Her game plan seems similar to mika but the match seems much harder. I find mika annoying af but it feels winnable and you can make it pretty hard for her to get in and start her shit. Against Laura I’m clueless.

for me, the hardest are:
Sim, Nash and because my personality/lack of knowledge i have some issues against Bison and Rashid.

Against Laura (5-5), use the banana>whiffed command grab to build meter (be aware she can ex elbow through the banana), and punish her fireball with a df.hp, ex bull horn and super.
In mid range you shouldn’t have problems if you don’t get CC by her s.hk so be aware she is going to do some risky things to get in, like v.skill>command grab or just jump, punish it accordingly. on defense, good luck is a hard situation, do a neutral jump, v.reversal, ex bull horn, block to escape, a least birdie has a lot of health so Laura needs like 3 clear openings for kill you, remember you can challenge after the elbow on block and you can punish her normals canceled on v.skill for free (only her s.mp>v.skill is safe).
Against Sim, Nash i just pick Karin/Cammy…lol

If you’re having problems with a specific character match-up, look for advice here!

Midway through a set against a good Dhalsim, he realized he could basically endlessly pressure me with a low hover into (I think) j.MP (quick long punch), then standing MP (I think… another quick long punch), repeat until he felt like doing something else.

Without meter to EX Bullhorn through it, I could find no good answer to that pressure outside of just backing off. When I was in range of it, it was free pressure for him.

Any solutions? It didn’t feel like I had the opportunity to just jump forward over the standing punch, thanks to blockstun. I tried to absorb both punches with F.HP, but I didn’t have the range for the jumping punch and he blocked me after the standing punch.

The only jumping punches that Dhalsim has that can hit you grounded are his j.lp and j.hp. It sounds like you are talking about j.lp and it’s only plus on block if done from the lowest possible height, it’s negative if he’s going into it straight from v-skill.

i have a decent strat for mika now…so now i dont get demolished and actually brought it to a more even match up…Laura still makes my life miserable though

@metrokard - What’s your strat? Don’t tease us like that!

i didnt say it because i think its dumb but mika really sucks in nuetral and her anti air isnt great either birdie neutral jump feirce beats alot of stuff she does if she drop kicks down fierce or tries to even come from the air it pretty much shuts her down…

guile is going to be a nightmare

Sweet donuts is the Guile matchup not the most depressing matchup thus far? V:

I’m legitimately struggling to find a way to get in on him, his damned backwards walk speed makes even getting a “Here Ya Go!” through his projectile troublesome as he can often walk out of range of it.

I’m also really struggling to find normals that challenge his. I feel like once I do finally get in on Guile he’s a pain in the arse to keep locked down without him being able to just beat you out with his own normals. Any advice so far from Birdie players?

birdie fucks up guile imo…

just walk him to the corner, use slide and s.mk a lot, mixed with spaced f+fp.

if he starts neutral jumping, walk forward and c.mp

ex revenger is really really good vs guile since hes always holding back trying to walk back usually. but dont do it when theyre looking for a jump.

random distanced lk chain is good. you can make reads and occasionally hit with mk revenger.

i don’t really use can that much but banana is useful if he tries to follow up or jump after a sonic boom.

command grab is quite useful since his reversal is up down, he has to commit to doing it or jump. making him block say crossup j.mp then command grab is strong mixed with s.lk s.lp hit confirm, and extended tick strings.

ken dp xx v trigger is -5, but you have to mash basically during the flash to punish.

NOT SAFE.

So can Vega fly around at will or is there a way to actually punish FBA and the air throw dive? 2MP isn’t working consistently. Basically it never works if he actually doves the claw attack from the dive. Also can he be punished for just flying around without doing anything or do I have to take it?

You got to do it a little early you should be able to stuff all his fba even the ex.

Crouching MP stuffs all of Vega’s dives if he’s actually attacking, yep.

If Vega likes to walldive over you, you can smack him out of the air with jumpback attacks. Of course there’s no catch-all answer to every single walljump option he has, but he definitely can’t do exactly as he likes.

Thanks. Which normals would you recommend for meeting him head on air to air?

whats the best way to deal with chun air lightning legs…i beat chun in neutral but once they start doing that im screwed

J. Mp

C. Mp

i figures out you can slide under chun with down forward hp when she does lightning legs…if she does it a little too high you can get a free punish

What is Birdie’s worst matchup and why?
