Birdie General Thread: The Banana Bogey Brawler

From how Guile generally plays, it does sound like EX Revenger is the go-to getting-in tool. Just making Guile consider those should be valuable, because the more time he spends NOT booming, the better a time you have.

Just wanted to give a quick shoutout to LPN for repping Birdie (and a sick Alex) in a 4th place finish at NWM. His Birdie was quite simply godlike until he ran into FChamp’s Sim. Not often we see the tubby one used in top 8.

From limited time I feel that Guile completely destroys Birdie, its about as bad as the Nash matchup.

Made Gold tonight fellas. I know some of you have been there for a long time but it still feels good finally arriving after a reasonable amount of work. Cheers and good luck to all my Birdies.

Congrats bro lol.

What are max damage options after blocking Guile’s sweep?

Is there a list of which normals you can cancel with birdie’s v-skill? Just found out for myself that you can cancel standing medium punch into can or banana. Is their anything else?

Any normal that’s special-cancellable applies. st.LP, st.MP, cr.MP, cr.HP, st.LK.

So I’ve basically got to platinum by exposing other players weaknesses. Birdie punishes your opponents bad decisions hard. But when I run into solid players the match becomes a grind. They dont whiff buttons or jump in like they’re madmen. I have to fight for every inch of the screen and bulldog my way in and back them to a corner. And when played against these good players Birdies gameplan becomes boring and Im not enjoying that. The thing is that I don’t think I would have this kind of success playing with any other character. I play Ryu and Nash casually on the side but they’re not near Birdies level. I think it’s Birdies slow walkspeed and good AA that let me play my game methodically and with thought. I don’t get flustered and I’m very confident when playing Birdie. But good players don’t let Birdie smother them with his normals and play it cool and calm. Don’t get me wrong, I can definitely hang on with these good players and beat them aswell, but it’s not fun and feels more like a chore. It feels like I’ve hit a plateau and I’m not leveling up much either. Is Birdie just a scrub killer?

Anyone know the frame data for Birdie’s normals and specials canceled into V-Trigger? I know MP Bullhead xx V-Trigger is -1 on block, but what about the rest? Is HP Bullhead plus on block since it naturally recovers faster than LP or MP Bullhead?

The only one plus on block is ex bullhead cancelled on first hit. It’s probably the only way to cancel into VT that’s plus on block.

Birdie does fine killing lower level players for sure. But he does need to work on higher level players. If people know Birdie’s options then it’s always going to be a struggle or at least more work. At that point it’s more of a footsie and neutral battle which Birdie does well in. If the opponent doesn’t allow you to freely vskill or get away with vskill gimmicks then it’s generally going to be harder or slower because you’re playing traditional street fighter or finding gaps and holes to sneak in a donut or banana/can. I personally enjoy it because it allows me to show Birdie still can hang with his normals and whiff punish and counterpoking abilities.

I feel like I’m going insane here. When was the armor on EX (non v-trigger) Bull Head removed? I SWEAR it used to have armor between frame 3 or 4 until the first active frame. I just thought the game was messing with me lately, but when I checked the Prima guide today the armor note is removed and testing in training mode, I can’t seem to get any armor out of it either.
Did I just wake up in a parallel universe or something? I can’t see any changes to Birdie in the 1.03 patch notes either.

The only non V Trigger special move that has armor is ex bullhorn.

Finally hit lvl 24 yesterday, so close to getting my gold chain so i can be poppin. Any advice on how to implement bullhorn into combo’s?

I play on stick and the button hold seems to screw with me everytime.

congrads to veggy for getting top 8 at the russian tourney

No Birdie in the top 8 at EVO but I was able to get past my first bracket. Not bad for my first major. The character is definitely viable.

I think SFV gives you a lot of room to make mistakes which means that pretty much every character is viable. That being said, I definitely think Birdie is super weak. One Birdie in Top 64 and a lot of other Birdies have seen the writing on the wall. Good job though! Always great to do well with a limited character.

Dumb question, but what does Birdie say during the LP version of Killing Head? I always hear “get this, you’d be god awful!” and I want to know what he’s really saying.

played against a urien today…his fireball is really a pain in the ass in this. once he comes out ill try stuff out in training mode but right now he seems like a tough match up.
