Theres nothing wrong with that and even Bill Nye said that. Whats wrong is what Creationism is about teaching and more importantly what its trying not to teach. You should really watch that debate to see what both of them had to say. @LoyalSol
In my Texas middle school our 6th grade biology teacher was very careful during the Evolution unit to mention that some people believe in Creationism, and that the theories of neither Evolution nor Creationism could be completely refuted or confirmed. He didn’t go into detail about Creationism, just mentioned it, and then went on with the Evolution material, occasionally stressing that it was still a theory. This is only one school in the South, so it’s not a representative sample of course, just giving my two cents.
A theory is a system of ideas intended to explain something, such as a single or collection of facts, events, or phenomena. A good theory is typically developed using critical thinking and evidence. A truth is fact or reality.
An example of both: I have a theory that if I flip a two-sided coin after drinking water it will always land on heads. My evidence for this theory consists of several dozen trials, where I took a drink of water and then flipped a coin, or did not drink water and then flipped a coin. When I did drink water it always came up heads and when I did not drink water it came up both heads and tails.
My theory, though proven correct so far, is not a truth. With our current information evolution appears to be the most likely explanation of events, but we can’t be certain it won’t be somehow refuted in the future by technological innovations, so we’re forced to classify it as a theory regardless of how likely it seems to be a truth.
Religion should be taught in theology class (something that frankly American schools are lacking in oddly enough.)
Science should be taught in science class.
Unless creationists are claiming that creationism is a science than this solves the problem. If creationists are claiming it is a science than they need to follow the simple steps of scientific method to prove it.
Also, for the thing about “Theory” of evolution. Last I checked that only applies to how HUMANS evolved, not that evolution itself doesn’t exist. There is ample evidence proving that evolution can and does occur and also can be manipulated through specific breeding (see Dog shows).
As much as I love the idea of progressive believers in christ that agree with the existence of evolution, one logically can’t marry Judeo-Christian beliefs (or most religious beliefs honestly) and evolution, or scientific logic in any respect. Not when the 4,000 year old texts that sprouted the belief in god contradicts scientific observations at nearly every turn. Honestly, it seems like people like the comforts of living in modernity and the thoughts of a higher being housing a “better place” at the ready; so they don’t really have to rationalize life’s existential bleakness. It’s just a matter of convenience rather than true logical pursuit.
For example, the biblical belief that the earth was made before the sun and stars, when according to scientific models the sun is a 2nd or 3rd generation star that possessed heavy metals in its early formation capable to produce a rocky planet (i.e. earth). Even our morality has changed, unless you believe kids laughing at an old man should warrant them to being mauled to death by a vicious she-bear and that married women should be silent when in the presence of men or risk lashings.
Still, it’s a much better attitude than fundamentalism (I don’t see any Gregor Mendels coming out of the Bible Belt anytime soon), so I guess it’s better than nothing. I just laugh at the “hip” preachers and vicars who support evolution, gay rights, and whatever progressive cultural movement, when the bible clearly contradicts these ideas. Religions are quietly conceding their antiquated views in order to remain relevant to the modern world, because their societal position now wavers on their cultural relevancy (holidays, funerals, history, art, idioms, etc.), rather than the moral and pseudoscientific base they have held for many millenia. These institutions aren’t dying but ironically “evolving” to fit their modern circumstance.
Now the belief in a god or whatever ephemeral being cannot be proved or disproved; and while I don’t believe in forcing people to recant their internal beliefs, the burden of proof rests on the believer, not on the unbeliever.
god of the gaps keeps shrinking. the fight against evolution is the last bastion that these fundies cling on to. obviously, anyone who is honest about the bible would know that evolution and creationism are mutually exclusive. for one thing, where does the soul come from? did it evolve? some of these posts in this thread illustrate just how woefully inadequate the science education in america is and how far behind the usa is, and how futile it is to argue against ignorance. these debates may serve some good for people on the fence, but young earth creationists did not arrive at their position through rational thinking, so they cannot be convinced via a rational argument.
It’s more of a debate about how old the earth is, Ken Ham thinks it’s 6000 years old which IS mutually exclusive with science.
There is tons of overwhelming evidence to support evolution, meanwhile the amount of evidence to support the existence of a God is the same as the easter bunny, santa clause and fairies, should we also teach those things in school?
the whole issue can be resolved by having theology classes in schools. but oh no, school can’t teach my kid about sex, so why are they teaching them that dirty arab terrorist religion.
the single biggest issue I have against creationists, is that they want to teach their views along side evolution…
Well, can we talk about the asian kids that aren’t christian, or the indian kids that don’t believe in your nonsense? You cannot teach religious origin in a public school. Especially in a country that has no religion, and has made it abundantly clear that there needs to be a clear separation of religion and state. Why are you going to favor one religion over the other.
It’s also hilarious that not a single person who believes in creationism as stated by the bible as the absolute truth has never answered this. they stay quite, or they have straight out told me this is a christian nation…
Secondly, a literal interpretation of the bible is flawed because of one word. day. Day isn’t literally 24 hours. Day means period, we simply associate a day as 24 hours, which isn’t always the case because back in Shakespeare day most people died before 50. Also, our english translation has gone through 4-5 translations from very primitive broken languages that do not translate well to English.
The story of Genesis is an origin story, that is, it’s an interpretation and worded in such a way to make it understandable for cave Jews 6000 years ago. But it doesn’t necessarily also mean that there wasn’t some “higher” force.
Both sides are fucking stupid. And both sides always commit the same logical fallacies each other accuse each other of making. Stay free idiots.
