Kinda confused by Knightmare’s inclusion in that list, like others have mentioned. I might just be because I was our Knightmare player but I never saw anything less than either fear or loathing of him (you have no idea how much people told me he was cheap mid- or post-match ). Underestimated or overlooked though? Didn’t happen.
Same goes for Asteroth (though he’s at least ‘big’. Never played him myself but our two Asteroth players are scary with him.)
Nightmare isn’t a big guy.
From the Soul Calibur wiki:
Height 5’6"
Weight 212 lbs.
Seigried is even smaller:
Height 5’6’ (168 cm)
Weight 110 lbs. (50 kg)
also,
Taki
Height: 5’7"
Weight: 117 lbs.
wtf?
what?!
taki being bigger than siegfried is freaking me out
In brawl 3D is top tier… Chain grab + great counter to snake…
Edit - No to mention hes got a broken back air! that thing is out forever… and like what 9 jumps?
Ivy is 5’10" and weren’t people smaller back in the medivel days?
Myyyy bike munaaaayyyyyyyyy
personally i dont like most of the big characters because they try to make them too goofy note for capcom STOP IT!
dan is the best goofy character in the game theres no need to make more
i miss the days of the old feral mean blanka now he’s just a cudly smart ass
seth is tooo cliche’d shoulda just stuck with urien theres gotta be a way they could have worked him into the story
why does sagat where skinny jeans? (jus playin)
I actually tend to drift towards the larger characters, ASSUMING they have a greater advanteage on damage as compared to the smaller faster characters. Like I naturally drifted towards T. Hawk when I first started assuming he had monsterous damage output and he does. When it comes to people hating or dissing on you for picking a character just tell them to “suck ma dick”. Seriously, that’s the lowest level of douchebagery there is. That’s why the game has different characters.
4 or 5 puffs, and a recovery. Kirby has 9.
The thing is, in this time we live in, the appeal of a good worthy fighter is someone who looks either quick, or strong. Media has taught us to instantly assume fat characters (or even people irl) are going to be slow as shit, and no one wants to use a slow character (or be fat irl). Game Dev’s take this in mind and decide to turn that around, providing a level of surprise (a mindgame or mixup if you will), while players will choose fat characters to be different or for the lolz.
Apparently looking back at everyone I main I like having a DP grab, and well big characters then to be the ones that have these so w/e. I also enjoy the grappler mixup, having a decent health bar is nice too.
Still has like 3-4 totally shit matches he loses for free though.
I think the better question is “why are fat video game characters always dudes”
I want to beat someone with some fat/huge chick.
Your wish is my command:

Fat fighters need lovin’ too. It’s just the stereotypical American view of things: Beautiful people are loved, fatties are shunned. Despite most of America being in the later catagory.
Also people like to play who they relate to or look like. For example: Daigo, the most famous nut huggee on SRK, is a stoic and determined lone warrior. Naturally in -most- games he main’s Ryu.
On the other hand there is Justin Wong, the determined and boastful chunky man who is America’s best hope for kicking Japan ass. He naturally like to go with Rufus. Yes, I made this all up on the spot, but it has it’s merits to the topic.
I am a narcissist, so I like to use Claw on occasion. I also like ruling the world, so Bison/Seth are cool to roll with.
i remember that game!
Does someone like Rila from Breakers Revenge count? She’s about as ripped as Chyna was back in the WWF, maybe even more.
Ha!
Anyway, on the other side, we don’t really complain about scantily clad 16 year old girls that plague fighting games… Besides Makoto (and maybe you can make a case for Tali and Ivy) most female characters are quick and short. Fat guys stereotypically balance the game, just like the teenage girls.
BTW, Rock > Astaroth
WTF? Nightmare is vicious. He’s perennially a good character.
But the big character playstyle usually isn’t appealing to most players.
Rufus and Bob don’t have the playstyle of a big character, but are far less visually appealing.
my response to the thread’s creator is this…
There is no such thing as weak characters in a good fighting game…just weak players.
–funny thread though—
You know I used to really hate Rufus’s design. Like he looks so fucking stupid, I just hated him at first. Now he is probably one of my favorite Street Fighter characters. I love his stupid ass sayings “space opera symphony!” “goodbye!” “america sheds a tear”. Plus his ridiculously long end quotes that are not related to anything. He’s adorable, I would hella party with him.
