Just wondering about what a sa3 elena should do for meter building as a turtle.
Edit - another quick question to save space - how do you perform her kara throw? I see it mentioned frequently, but there isn’t a faq here that explains it that I could find. I saw someone mention f+mk, then lp/lk (for throw) but am I supposed to see something to confirm it came out?
Yes, kara-throw is F+MK ~ LP+LK. The range is rediculous, and the startup animation for the F+MK really does make it look like Elena is doing something other than throw… which leads to more throws.
I usually just use c.MP to build meter, don’t know if there’s a “better” poke to whiff.
You won’t win a lot with Elena by doing nothing but turtling when you get to the higher skill levels of 3S…even with SA3. SA3 should be more of an extra option or an ace in the hole - you should still use your meter on EX combos more often than not.
That being said, the best individual move to build meter is C.Mp, but you shouldn’t really need to - Elena can do B&B’s with just enough meter to do one or two EX moves - that’s only slightly more than half her super bar. You can get enough to do that by landing just a few hits.
Yeah, thinking Elena was 100% Chun-lite was my mistake. Elena surprised me with her damage/stun capabilites off of one EX combo. The ONLY really thing I hate about Elena is the lack of a really good low poke. It doesn’t even have to combo into anything, just that it hits low; like Urien’s c.MK, that doesn’t combo into anything, but it’s AMAZING and opens up other aspects of his game.
EDIT: Yes, I understand c. MK exists for Elena, but it just isn’t the same to me.
c.mp builds meter the fastest I think, but personally I use b.hk to build meter, because it has so much priority against dash ins, pokes, jump ins etc., c.mp seems a little more vulnerable to me when I use it, I guess because she’s sticking her hitbox out so much and for such a long time.
b+hk can be substituted, its slower but beats more stuff than c.mp.
c.mk is your distance range low poke, good range, speed, and recovery.
In higher level play 90% of elena’s play SA2 for the sole benifit of verifying a late cancel from a c.mp and having EX meter. (SA1 is alright…however to me it sucks, the damage is low and you gotta be close to get it all to hit. You can verify sa2 from almost max distance on her c.mp.)
c.mp->sa2 is much better and practical than her EX combos basically cause its her only way to verify damage outside of throws.
Her EX combos are REALLY strong however and are GREAT for punishment in the right situations.
For a turtling Elena with SA3… You should not hesitate to attack and be ready to parry any counter attacks in order to build a good meter(whenever you have high health bar)…
Usually a tick throw and b.hk variation can build a good meter… even if you’re hit you can always use the SA3 to recover after throwing the opponent.
SA3 is much advantageous if you know how to do some mind games on your opponent. As soon as he looses focus because of you’re turtling and healing, you can own the game.
EX Combos aren’t all that much harder to hit-confirm than SA2. If you have a style of play that forces an opponent to make mistakes or bad decisions (baiting reversals/attacks, too many fireballs, etc.), you don’t even really need to hit-confirm that much. Beyond that, SA3 gives you more options. I’m not saying that SA2 isn’t good, though; quite the contrary, I think SA2 is excellent. I think SA3 allows you to lean back a little more, though. The only match where I believe that SA2 is absolutely, without-a-doubt better than SA3 is versus Chun-Li.
Id love to see someone consistently hitconfirm c.mk->EX spin. For one thing if you are too far away it wont connect all the time and you cant really late cancel with it cause it wont connect either.
I still see no reason to play SA3 though. You limit your damage and EX use.
SAIII’s good in a few match ups. Vs. Hugo mostly. Maybe Alex and Oro. If the character doesn’t have a good way to cover ground quickly, SAIII can be a pain in the butt to deal with. But otherwise, SAII makes Elena’s damage potential go through the roof.
Yes because you become the black chun li… And the match is more intresting.
Also to answer the topics question cr. mp to build that meter. However i cant really see the situation in which you would get to sit there building meter. Especially cause your goal at first is to poke and get that knockdown.
