There were many 1f link combos in Vanilla too. Vega depended on cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.mp otherwise you could just FORGET about playing him. Now not so much.
I know they did, but how do those affect 1f links? I don’t see the correlation.
I’m sure there were links as there have been in every SF game, I just don’t remember people complaining about them or them being such a huge part of the game till Super dropped. It seemed like the number of combos dependent on 1f links increased a great deal and I cant really see any reason why that would be other than Capcom deciding to do it just because they could.
I don’t know about VF, but Guilty Gear has some combos that have really tight timing. And sometimes those are the optimal combos, but you can do pretty good damage with combos that don’t require FRCs. But the non-FRC combos, you sometimes give up positional advantages. Still the game gives you a choice to use them or not use them, and you can be fairly effective without them depending on what level you’re playing at.
SF4, you can’t go too far without running into a bunch of link-based combos, which, considering how they were talking about making it a more beginner friendly game, is pretty ridiculous. And if you’re not using link combos, then you’re likely not playing your character to their fullest potential.
Except the argument isn’t can you do high damage without one frame links, your argument was just give AE way more damage, which does have one frame link combos which could become touch of death combos.
