I ordered my first arcade stick but I have a couple questions. (Madcatz FightStick Tournament Edition S)
I prefer clicky buttons with feedback. I know the Sanwas that come stock in this have no tactile or click to them unless you bottom them out. I hear GameFinger buttons with blue switches is a good alternative. Would they fit in this stick? Anyone have any experience or suggestions for getting that clickly tactile feedback without sacrificing quality?
GamerFinger buttons with the blue microswitches are definitely clicky, but I’ve never been able to fit them in any of my Mad Catz cases. In my experience the button holes in Hori cases are bigger and the GamerFinger buttons barely fit in my Hori Real Arcade Pro 3. And as hard as they were to put in the Hori, they were twice as hard to take out.
Forget merely shaving off the tabs; I think you might have to dremel off a couple millimeters to get GamerFingers to fit in a Mad Catz.
Thanks guys. So just to be clear you’re saying the buttons holes in the madcatz panel aren’t big enough to fit these buttons unless I dremal them out? That’s unfortunate. I’d be afraid of getting a bad fit if I were to do that. I might have to pass on these. Is there no alternative?
Use a hand file, make small corrections and try a test fit.
It be time consuming, but if you are concern of making too big of a opening you can make smaller adjustments.
Also as your going slower its easier to keep that circular shape
Patience is a virtue. There is a solution on the horizon that will allow you to use mech switches in Sanwa buttons of the 2 piece plunger variety. That said, it really shouldn’t be much trouble to file those holes out for gamerfinger.
Sounds like you ordered the stick, but have yet to receive/use it. You should try using it first to see how you like it before you go out and spend money on something that you might or might not need anyways.
Rather than go straight Gamerfinger buttons, why not try out Seimitsu buttons first afterwards instead? You’re not gonna get the tactile mid-press click like a cherry microswitch, but they provide a little bit more resistance and thus a bit more feedback than Sanwas.
Please do not use Cherry MX Blues. They are terrible for gaming, and not even recommended for PC gaming. The feel is pretty good, but they suffer from something called “hysteresis”, in which the disengage distance is higher than the engage distance. Kailh Greens (or Razer Greens, if you care about branding) have less hysteresis and are slightly better for gaming. That is, if you do want to use GamerFinger buttons. http://deskthority.net/wiki/Hysteresis (Replace the word “actuation” with “engage” and you get your arcade description).
Since you can’t use iL buttons on that case, you could alternatively use Sanwa OBS-30A buttons, which use an Omron microswitch that is considered “clicky”. That is, if you have the space. https://www.akishop.jp/buttons/260-obs-30a.html##
We really need a clicky, tactile arcade button thread.
Blues were never intended for gaming, they are intended for typist who likes to hear alot of click clack on their mechanical keyboards.
The only keyboard switch that makes more noise are Bucking spring keys.
How hard would you say it is to get them to fit? I couldn’t really tell what was going on in that picture… Would I just be carving out the plastic on the inside to get them in there? It seems like these OBS-30A/Bs are the way to go.
Just installed some GamerFinger G2’s in my TE-1, had no problem putting it in, didn’t even have to shave down the 4 nubs or do anything with the metal panel, taking it out took some muscle though.
I’m like clobber-saurus with a dremel and tin snips man so for me it would be a lot of work.
If you’re a bit more skilled/crafty and wanted to be neat I guess you could just make those holes in the button supports bigger, I don’t have skills like that so I would have to cut the entire tray out.
I said I was 99.99% sure that they wouldn’t fit in without modding because I first tried putting OBSF-30RG buttons in, but even though they were shorter than OBS-30B buttons, they were still too tall to go in.
Also both types weren’t clicky enough for me so I went back to giant American style sticks, but preferences differ from user to user.
I agree with @FreedomGundam that you you should try some Seimitsu buttons first, much cheaper route, some PS-14-GN-C buttons might be nice.
I’m gonna suggest Seimitsu as well. I put some in my stick and they feel amazing to me. Perfect amount of resistance so that I can rest my fingers on them. They aren’t clicky sounding though, more of a “clack” to them, but if you want a more tactile feeling without losing quality they are worth trying. Definitely a huge improvement over the super light Sanwa feeling, and no filing required for them to fit.
Seimitsu is what I use right now. If I had to compare them to something familiar, I’d say that they are similar to Cherry MX Brown or Clear in terms of feel. You can feel a small plastic bump in the travel path. It has a decent tactile feel, and the engage force and distance feel right where they should be for a general purpose button. However, it is just that: a plasticky sound and feel, not quite as good as something more mechanical.
Looking forward to seeing what the EVO projects are.
