It seems entirely this generation, video game developers see no value in making a decent semi-accurate d-pad.
The 360 d-pad s beyond horrible, even newer version. You press left and you may get left or down left or up left. You press up and have the same problems.
So my question is, what 360 controller has the best D-Pad? I’ve used the madcatz fightpads, and while the d-pad functions correctly, I can’t stand the button layout. I’m looking for something by a 3rd party developer, close to a standard 360 controller.
Now my question about this one is how do you guys get this one to not break? Its a great pad but we’ve had 2 so far and both times the d-pad broke in less than 2 weeks (and we’re not doing anything unnecessarily rough with it either).
Ummm it was the frustration from using that exact d-pad that lead to the creation of this thread. I have two of those controllers (MW3 bundle) and can say they are 100% complete shit.
I use the evil d-pad controller for MK. The d-pad has a button for each direction. It works really well for me, but I don’t use it for anything other than MK. I never tried it for marvel.
Everytime i hear someone complain about the X-Box D-pad i can’t help but think its noobish whining, blaming the pad instead of their lack of skill and execution. Not unlike that dork in the ol’arcade days who’d get mad after losing and blame the cabinet controls even though they were fine.
I use the stock 360 gamepad, the wireless one that came with my slim model, and every move & motion i can do accurately 99.9% of the time. I play UMVC3 on X-Box live all the time and run into far more problems with occasional online lag.
I think you’re delusional. You can say your pad is okay and maybe you’re just a horrible player who can’t tell or maybe you’re lucky and one out of a million people who somehow managed to receive a working d-pad when the rest of us didn’t. It’s always people who play newer games such as SF4 and MvC that have huge windows for execution and require very little persicion who seem to think 360 controller d-pads are fine. Take your d-pad into any game that shows you what input you pressed and then look at the commands. You’ll probably be surprised to see how many things register different that what you tried to input.
I play on stick normally, however for certain games (namely Guilty Gear) I use pad. I’ve used pad for years with GG and haven’t had any issue, but when I try it with a 360 pad all of a sudden it’s like I’m trying to input things with a track ball. Give me a break, it’s the shitty d-pad not my execution.
Have you considered using a Mad Catz Fightpad? I’m not a pad player, but I have heard of those issues with the new Xbox 360 transforming D-pad and also of issues with the PDP Versus Fightpad with the joystick microswitches wearing out too quickly. All things considered, you may just want to get a Mad Catz Fightpad and give it a whirl. Else, why not try learning Guilty Gear on a stick?
^^^I have a fightpad. …the d-pad works good but I don’t like the layout of the rest of the controller. …I can actually play GG competently on stick but my stick game will never match my pad game.
I appreciate people giving answers, I don’t want to seem like I’m just shooting everything down but really I’ve been through all these loops and was hoping there was something I’ve missed.
I’ve found that playing SSFIVAE, the analog stick is much better for play instead of the D-Pad. Same goes with Tekken 6.
Doesn’t seem to be the case for SFxT though. I’ve had issues with diagonals and had to resort to using the D-pad instead, but it’s worked out pretty well so far. But of course I’ve been using the 360 pad because my other pads are broken and I’ve been using it for over a year now and have gotten pretty used to it, so I can’t speak for others.
Veteran player here since the days of the original SF:WW, and longtime MVC2 player on stick(my Sanwa HRAP). Unfortunately UMVC3’s wonky ass button system makes stick play for me really weird, so i regret to say i’m 100% pad warrior in the Marvel 3 era.
Still, i have little to no trouble performing motions & inputs consistently with stock pad that came with my 360 slim.
Stop bashing and give the pad a chance. Especially the newer gen ones that came about with the release of the slim 360 several years ago.
I have an etokki converter on the way! I so cannot wait.
I’ve given them more than a fair shot. BTW all 3 of those default 360 pads are from slims, the black from my JP 360 and the 2 MW3 ones from the my MW3 console obviously.
Are you serious? I’ve played on pad for years, using normal d-pads, and my favorite is the Saturn pad. I was at my brother’s house and was playing MK with him on 360 and the d-pad really is atrocious. Has to be the worse controller I’ve ever used.
Don’t be so close minded and assume that because your friend’s controller happened to be crap, that they all are. I have a friend who’s 360 D-pad is pretty horrid, and had to bring mine over whenever we play.
I know i can’t be the lone individual out there with a magical 360 pad that works great.
My brother, not my friend. And there were 4 different 360 controllers and the d-pads were all crap on them. The reason wasn’t because of wear and tear, it was because in general the d-pad is atrocious and inaccurate. It’s as simple as that.
