Well, for starters, I think you should learn how to block better. In the Sakura video, you kept walking into or jumping into a lot of damage that could have easily been prevented. Hold your ground⦠in Street Fighter, jumping is normally a last resort.
As with Vega and the the other guy above, your characters has good pokes and good tools. Make the most out of them. You have a good c. mp and s. hk.
Donāt just throw Soul Spiral out there (same for Soul Spark). Combo into them, or at least have a good reason for doing what you are doing.

You can use Roseās slide (down/forward+ mk) for moving around more, but donāt abuse it. Long story short, learn how to block, be patient and donāt jump in right away, donāt just throw stuff out there, learn a few basic combos.

Hi, Iām also a first time poster. Iāve played sf4, started right when it moved to Steam on pc in ae2012 and now playing ultra. I used to play Chun Li in sf2 ce, so Iāve been playing her in sf4 in ranked matches. Iāve tried ryu online but it pretty much killed my spirit and points after so many lost matches, that Iāve been only playing with Chun. People online are ridiculously good, it seems. I have about a 40% win rate that never seems to go anywhere within 1% of that.

Here is a match that I won pretty fairly against a dude who was probably better than me. This person like hunted me down after like 5 times, kept changing their screen name so I wouldnāt kick them, playing mad cheap to get the points back.
Iāve searched here researching the viewpoint on cheapness, and it seems that with teching, etc that there is no cheapness in sf4. I try not to play a certain way, generally involving how I do throws, but I have started resorting to similar once that door is opened.
and this poor Makoto, I feel bad about. I am a monster in the 3rd round. I suppose the catch is that I donāt learn as much to play that way, probably not the best way to make friends?

Iām a beginner myself but Iāll try to give atleast some critique.
I noticed you threw out several fireballs when they could easily jump over them and hit you. Thatās very unsafe of you and I suggest you try to learn the range where they canāt jump over your fireballs and hit you. I also donāt think I saw any anti-airs. Sometimes you saw them jump you jumped up yourself and did a hard kick. This worked a couple of times but I still suggest you get comfortable with anti-airing. mp dp, cr.hp are your best anti-airing tools. Especially in that second Akuma match, you went for a grab on their wake up like every time. If you do it that often, people are gonna catch on and do a reversal or something. I suggest learning some crossups or mixing it up with forwards mk which is an overhead (again, Iām a beginner ryu aswell. Your jumping mk or lk can crossup and you can also crossup with an air tatsu. You jumped quite a lot, not too much but quite a lot still. You didnāt get punished a lot, but better opponents will punish this. I also feel like as you learn to anti-air and when you improve your zoning-game you wonāt feel like you have to jump as often.
Again, Iām still a noob and there are surely other people who can give you a lot better criticism. I just donāt want this thread to overflow with beginner replays while no ones receives any tips.
You were getting a lot of mileage out of low Roundhouse and forward jumping Roundhouse. I would suggest not using these buttons in the manner you were using them, at least not nearly as often as you were. Low Roundhouse is -14 on block, so if your opponent begins to notice you throw it out a lot they will bait it and punish you for using it. Low Roundhouse is much better when comboād into, I like to use: cr. lk, cr. lp, cr. mp, cr. hk, as well as cr. mp, cr. mp, cr, hk and cr. lp, cr. lp, st. lp, cr. hk for comboāing into low Roundhouse. As far as jump Roundhouse goes, it can be a useful tool to meet your opponent in the air (especially Akuma as a matter of fact), but it would be more beneficial to learn to stay grounded and develop a strong anti-air game, learn to reactionarily use low Fierce, or standing Roundhouse when your opponent jumps at you. Over time (and more practice) learn to use Strong Shroyuken to anti-air as well. Ryu has a lot of anti-airs that can be used in a lot of situations, but focus on low Fierce and stand Roundhouse at first, those two can take you a long way. The last thing I would point out is to use low Forward more, during the set there were a lot times where low Forward would have been much safer and more optimal than low Roundhouse was. Learn to cancel an Hadoken off of low Forward, with a strong anti-air game and representation of low Forward xx Hadoken you can get a ton of success by staying safely grounded.
Iād like some feedback on my shitty ryu. I have three matches here. One with Guy where I played even worse because I was salty. I was happy to get the lp dp -> ultra 1 setup though. The Sakura I played Iāve played quite a lot with. Heās better than me with Sakura, and thatās not even his main. I picked one match where I beat him and one where he beat me easily.
No such thing as cheap. If it works, it works. If you mean the throws, the burden is on the opponent to not get grabbed, or to break the throw, or stay outside of grab range and punish any attempts.
I only watched the first two vids, but hereās what I saw so far. Iāll watch the others later.
Ease up on the jumping. Ease up on mashing lightning kick as well⦠it works very differently in SF4 compared to SF2. They work now, but when you face better opponents, they will punish the two points I listed pretty hard.
Against Honda, you want to keep him out as much as possible, so he canāt start his hundred hands/buttslam/command grab pressure. Fireballs and good poke/antiair use often do the trick.
Thanks for the post, man. Iāve been lurking in the chun forums, but I do feel like my play is more fit for the noob forum for now. Like I barely remember to use ultras, and my damage is pretty bad, like not doing combos really. Iām kind of playing champion edition?
I try to jump, like, when I can, as like a challenge, or bait, but yeah, itās not as safe as I think it will be sometimes, and sometimes I just do the dumbest stuff. I have a few things that I change it up with like instant overhead over them and throw or tech works a lot of times. I try to work crossup/non crossup jump lk to jabs or throw. I find a few random jump lkās - theyāre hard to aa - will make it easier to do jump in target combo, less likely to punish. I also mix it up with empty jumps a lot, and I 've always had a bit of a trick where I do jump lk (mk in sf2) early and recover in the air; you can land like you empty jumped and block or throw. Yeah, I really need to stop desperately jumping in, though. I get punished pretty good for it at the end of this one which I lose. -I should have thrown from the empty jump at the end of the 1st round.
I guess I jump when I think I can, but i hear you that is less and less as opponentsā skill goes up.
Hereās another loss, this one against my friend who plays a pretty godlike Chun. He was at about 19,000bp before ultra dropped, and Iāve never beat him more than a round. Heās going easy on me here I think.
And this one that I shouldnāt have lost, got all charitable at the end there not punishing that dp or something. Also kept hsuāing in, like right off, when I shouldnāt have.
I hear you. i play on the arcade legends machine here at my work. Itās only got world warrior and champion edition.
I was never too into her half circle fireball in turbo. Her charge ābubble ballā in super was better, but something about that game bothered me, like they made the characters smaller, and the sound effects are different(?) It felt more ānerfyā somehow.
There is one guy here that I canāt beat his ryu for the life of me, he zones the shit out of me and I just canāt get in without a projectile. Thereās another dude that can beat me with his gief, just trading everything for spdās. I can take both of them out with my Vega, but Iām still best overall with Chun.

Havenāt played Ultra in a month, but will go back to it soon (closest I can do right now is player Super Street Fighter 4 on 3DS, but its not the same). Rcycling an old video I had from back. Play as Balrog, Juri, & Vega (considering to drop him though for someone else, and come back to him another time) mostly, and am pretty bad with all 3 of my mains.
Things Iām aware of:
I never do any impressive links or combos, not even Buffalo Head into Rogās U1
Against the characters I faced, I do not know the matchups against them very well (especially Decapre)
I press too many buttons
Jump too much
Donāt anti air
I can be pretty damn impatient when facing turtle characters and and always try to get in fast, especially ones with fireballs.
Sometimes I just throw out raw moves and rely on them for approaches (such as Rogās EX Rush Punches) rather than my normals

Here is a vid of a recent Rose match. I lose pretty bad to Rose and its getting to the point I will not get to my PP rank goals because I lose so much to her.
Her specials, especially EX give me trouble at footsie range. I can out zone her, but once she starts jumping in I have a hard time AAing her because of her jump arc and her shamwow priority.
On wakeup she a lot of options to beat BK vortex. What I think I will start doing is LK BK right on top of her to beat her air throw and ex shamwow. (spiral is shamwow right?)
I found neutral jump to bait a lot of her stuff useful. In this linked vid I was doing neutral jump HK which make me face the opposite way which makes it hard to punish her whiffs.

Seems youād get better feedback in the character discussion section than with the noobs.
