Beginner match analysis / gameplay critique thread

The Chun, right? I’ll see what I can do. Will edit/come back here when I’ve watched.

I’m the ryu you are talking about my post and thanks it’s appreciated!

Any help much appreciated

Watched both. I’m a Chun player actually, but here’s what I noticed.

-Make more use of your hadoken and shoryuken. Fireballs are good for pushing out Chun if she doesn’t use her Hazan Shu (flip kick that goes over fireballs) too much, and it should be fairly safe unless she has Ultra stocked. Don’t be too predictable in using fireballs though e.g. don’t stick to one version, mix it up so the varying travel speeds work to your advantage

  • In relation to the shoryuken, you should have hit Chun-Li out of her jumps. Anti-air better, especially since you have a shoryuken and a good c. hp, and Chun-Li is relatively easy to hit because of her floaty jump.

-Don’t get cornered. You can zone with fireballs, and combine that with moving forward (mostly by walking, but sometimes with dashing or hurricane kicks as well). You’re not a charge character (Chun-Li is in this game), so you should have not as much of an issue moving since you don’t have a charge to preserve.

-But at the same time, learn how to block properly. Walking forward too much without stopping got you hit by a lot of Chun’s pokes. It’s good that you’re not jumping around so much (a common problem among newer players), but your everything else does need work.

-When Chun-Li leaves herself open, such as when she was just doing lightning kicks or sweep from an unsafe distance, learn to punish. Simple things like hurricane kick, Super, or Ultra will help at the start. Later on, you will learn about max or optimal punishes.

But before I get ahead of myself, here’s two videos (posted earlier in the thread) that can help you learn Ryu. This post I am linking, and the post directly after it: Beginner match analysis / gameplay critique thread

I really think the Air one is a must-watch, not just for prospective Ryu players, but for SF4 players in general.

I suppose I have some more videos that might help. These two with Daigo vs various Chuns… in general the matchup still works the same. Main difference is the damage (it’s a lot smaller in v2012… you may get to test out the old versions when Ultra Edition Select comes out though) and Ryu’s air hurricane kick doesn’t let you escape corners anymore.

For a more recent vid, you can study this one. Arguably the best with their respective characters in the US:

well it looks like I got a lot of homework to do now thanks I appreciate the pointers!

Not a bad start. I think you should just finish your combos (go for the loops and more damaging stuff other than hp -> EX tatsu) Don’t focus everything; multi hits and breakers will screw you over. Jump less if you can. As Sakura, you can fireball war Sagat a little, if only to be less predictable with your approach.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah jumping and focusing is like my way of countering people who use their pokes better than me. Will get to work on my ground game and those awesome tatsu loops

Recently saw a really good video from Juicebox who pretty much opened my eyes to how footsies work so that should help.

P.S That Sakura made every range seem advantageous, wicked! Thanks again

Been playing for 5 months now and I’ve realised and tried my best to work on these: Patience, defence and footsies. How do I become better at these (particularly patience)? However I know with footsies I’ll become better with time, I just want some general advice and exercises.

I posted here a couple of months back, and in the couple of months I’ve been playing I think I’ve improved a good amount. But now I feel like I’ve hit a plateau, I’m not improving as much any more. I think I have pretty good combos and execution, but where I struggle is in footsies and match up knowledge. One match up in particular I really struggle is against M. Bison. I have no idea what to do against the scissor kick pressure or any pressure from pretty much any character for that matter. I’ll post a video of a couple of matches where I lose but think I did somewhat decent. Any tips on how to improve would be greatly appreciated.

I can see what you mean when you say you struggle in footsies and the Bison match up because you kinda remind me how I used to play. One thing you really need to develop is patience. I notice that you are very very eager to go in and want to start doing damage right away. Rather than trying to hit your opponent before they hit you, try to react to what your opponent does and punish them for making mistakes. If you notice you opponent likes to press buttons on wake up, punish according. It’s little things like that you have to really pay attention to in order to succeed. This game is about making reads and reacting accordingly. Also, don’t try to go in by jumping and by walking in. Create that space with all the normals god given you. Especially with that st.mk or st.mp in your case with Evil Ryu.

As far as having trouble with the match up knowledge, it all comes down to knowing what the strengths and weaknesses of a character and applying that to the match in lamest terms. Sakura’s wake up game is pretty poor, so I know that my main goal is to put her on the ground because she can only do one thing on wake up. Or if I’m dudley playing against Oni, I know Oni’s F.Hp is -11 on block and my Ultra 1 is 9 frame start up so if he throw that move out there, I can punish him. You just have to go do your homework and understand your options and your opponents characters options and know what works and what doesn’t work in the opponent you are playing against. It pretty much just come down with experience fighting against that character but you will gain it if you just keep playing.

How to deal with pressure from each character is just being patience really. Your opponent wants you to press buttons while you are in block stun so what I would do is to try to get a grasp on his pattern. If you start to get a grasp on when he starts to do things for example like you know when he’s going to throw, or you know when he’s gonna do his scissor kick, you can react before he actually do his move and you can punish him for it. It all really comes down to patience and paying attention to the little details that your opponent is doing so you can get an edge in the match.

Guile main here.

You can flash kick E.Ryu’s c.MK Hadouken IIRC.

I would focus on crouch teching throws more than flash kicking, but that’s just me. I don’t really flash kick outside of combos. There were a lot of times you could have combo’d into EX flash kick for bigger damage.

My main critique was on a fundamental level you weren’t playing for space. You always want to slowly be pressuring your opponent into a corner as Guile, even if they are advancing on you you can look to set them up with an air throw in the corner or cross up j.LK. A couple times you let E.Ryu out of the corner for no reason (I guess you were looking to flash kick his throws?).

Also sometimes when you had the life lead you went on the offensive when you had no reason to. Your opponent is forced to take lots of risks to damage you before time out, but instead I noticed you went in and ate a lot of DPs. It seemed like most of the damage you took in some of the rounds were from wake up DPs or DP FADC ultra.

I didn’t see you anti air with U2 at all either, which is a good option for over aggressive players. Especially if you have the life lead and they are going to be desperate to get in.

To be fair, though, E. Ryu is a tough match up for Guile.

Putting up a couple videos as Yun. Started him about a week ago and had some good games, but generally don’t know what I’m doing. One Cody, who I have a lot of trouble with as Yun, and two as Yang, who I don’t know what to make of yet. I didn’t mess around with video quality, just switched from streaming to recording so I could get these up quickly, so hopefully your eyes can take it.

I missed a lot of BnB’s. I don’t usually, but still wouldn’t have made much of a difference.
Random dragon kicks. Not as bad as when I play Ryu, but it’s not really a very good reversal for any of these.
The biggest problem: I don’t have any ground game, including knockdowns. I know that I’m not playing very well or very smart, but I don’t know what I’m doing that I shouldn’t and what I’m not that I should. Too many neutral jumps, bad divekicks. Not sure what to use for footsies as Yun.
Too many focus attacks. It never does me any good anyway.
Don’t know how to get out of pressure as Yun.

I also don’t have input display on. I’m still getting used to stick, so my inputs are most likely just plain embarassing, and I get Ultras maybe 30% of the time.

One more: I did better at this one, but missed some opportunities and didn’t have a great 3rd round.

I’m more of a marvel player…dont really play too much SF4 …help, tips, and critique with this match and the matchup?

I can’t record any videos right now, so can someone add me on XBLA as a friend and then fight me there to tell what I’m doing wrong? I’m an amateur.

Name’s charlieokonkwo6, just add me and tell me that you saw my post here.

I’ve been playing since roughly November of last year. Got tired of shooters so decided to embark on the wonderful and equally frustrating journey that is learning Street Fighter. The following vid is a representation of what I’m capable of. By no means is it normal. I don’t enter fights with a gameplan outside of what I feel is right at the time so any help on things I should start looking out for would be greatly appreciated. Vid starts at 30ish seconds. I’m playing as Sagat.

@BMsirhc1313‌ You played the matchup pretty well, for the most part you kept zangief away and you were using the right midrange normals (like sweep). Id say the one thing you should work on is being a bit more aggressive with your space control. He was jumping at you a lot and most of it was unchecked, meaning he was had a quick easy way to get into your face. Don’t be afraid to downback at some point during this matchup waiting for him to jump at you instead of either throwing fireballs or walking backwards. Akuma can cr.hp or dp him for free and this gives you time to move forward or throw an air fireball. You dont wanna be backdashing/walking backwards to give yourself space to throw ground fireballs, you wanna have that space to jump back and throw air fireballs or as somewhere to go when zangief gets in your face. Also neutral jump air fireballs are very hard for gief to deal with. Here’s a vid that may help a tiny bit, just watch how infiltration manages his space.
