"Becoming the strongest woman in the world!" Chun-li Match-up Thread

I’ve never been able to land U1 effectively in AE, so always go with U2. I find Chun hard to use in this game frankly, especially against some of the more popular, stronger characters, and I do take horrible damage, so I need to be able to land Ultra fairly reliably, and getting it off a low short does that when the match is right down the wire. Getting Ultra from air-to-air target combo has saved me a few times as well.

Of course, you never get to see who you’re going up against, but if I knew a Blanka was next I might pick U1, which certainly looks awesome, and probably deals more damage. I know she can dash into it, but it’s not like Super Turbo where you can walk up with it and apply lethal mix-up pressure. I’m really just waiting for the next update, or SFV, to see what the heck happens next to her.

U2 would be a lot better if they actually made it do damage. :shake: U1 is better and essential for a lot of matchups, but to this day it still bugs me how the inconsistency of the EX Lightning Kick -> U1 corner juggle was never really addressed.

There are certain matchups where using u2 just doesnt work, honda being the most notable

I use U1 for:
Honda
Blanka
Ryu
Akuma
T Hawk
Seth
Sagat

I occasionally use it against Oni (because his fireballs are so bad) and Evil Ryu, but so many people that play them are really bad, so im usually on them a lot, so i pick u2. if im playing a really strong zoning gouken, ill pick u1 as well

I generally like U2, but thats only because I can build it quickly and use it for combos.

if you want to play chun, youll have to learn how to use both ultras

Zangief is a U1 matchup for me because Hosenka punishes so much. Same for Rose and Guile now that I’ve gotten the hang of U1 punishing their stuff. Sometimes Juri.

I only use U2 against:

Cammy
Guy
Dudley
Yun
Yang
Juri
Gief
Hawk
Adon

I much prefer U1 though, and will prob be switching to it for gief and hawk permanently after trying it out with some success recently. I just think U2 needs to do significantly more damage to be viable. The fact you can combo it from a low short with one ex bar is not in my mind justification for its crap damage. Other characters (rufus and ryu being the most obvious examples) have numerous, meterless ways to land ultras that do much more damage. U2 def needs a buff but I don’t think it’s going to happen now. They’ve updated the game enough times.

Don’t forget Viper. That one’s been one of my gripes since vanilla.

"Oh c’mon! I have to check the character specific stuff and hope the stars are aligned right and hope the wind speed today is correct to land my corner juggle correctly. She on the other hand can just derp it out :looney: "

Yea vipers ridiculous as well but thankfully I rarely go against her. I missed rufus and guile off of my U2 list. How do you consistently punish guile with U1? I’ve tried it against his booms but he always recovers in time unless it’s ex. You could prob punish his sweep I’m guessing but decent guile’s avoid using it I find.

Yeah EX boom has fast startup but its recovery is pretty punishable.

For jab/normal sonic boom you kinda have to hear him say “So-” and/or watch his arms, then reaction punish. Dash-ultra technique helps a lot in this matchup.

I’ve only recently got dash ultra down. It’s been a godsend against Seth and sim but I’ve not used it much at all as yet outside of those matchups. I’m gonna try out u1 against guile. I want to use U1 in as many matchups as poss I just got scared off of using it against him. My reactions should be better now than when I last gave it a go so fingers crossed I wont regret it

I think dash ultra is why I dislike u1. Dashing in general is tough for me, I always dash in the dead zone on my stick

I would use U1 against Yun, Yang, Gief, Hawk, and Adon.

Yun and Yang like to whiff Palm from full screen to build meter, treat it like a fireball. Yun’s sweep is U1 punishable, and if you’re looking for it you can even punish his shoulder on startup.

Gief is an obvious choice I think, 1) for better damage since he has a ton of health, 2) because it will beat Lariat, 3) because if he does any Green Hand and you block, you can reversal U1 for free, if you time it well you can even hit him if he FADC backdashes. If he does df+HK (the sweep where he moves forward) and you block, that’s a U1 punish as well.

Hawk I think is personal for me, it punishes his sweep which will beat you if you backdash, so I like using it in that situation. Also, against his Condor Dive you can hit him with it when he lands (same with U2 but may as well use U1 for more damage). Condor Spire is technically punishable but usually the Hawk players (all two of them) I play against space it well enough that I can’t U1 reliably against Condor Spire.

Adon I think is another no-brainer, it punishes his wall dive and his Jaguar Kick if you do it before he lands.

I find with adons (and I only actually play them online) that by time I have ultra they’ve usually already stopped wall diving. Chun has so many other ways to stuff it without ultra ( s.rh, nj.rh and mp kikoken all stuff it fairly easily) that you can condition the adon to realise its not a viable thing to throw out. That’s why I stopped using U1. I land U2 much more frequently. But I only play terrible adons to be honest.

As for gief and hawk I’m making the switch. It makes much more sense.

And for Yun and yang - if I ever play any now 2012 is out I’ll try and remember to try u1. Nobody seems to play them at all anymore!

how do you beat blanka and vega :frowning:

do you have to use U1 at a particular time? there was a few times where Lariat beat u1

Usually as long as he has completed one full turn you will hit. If you execute from too far though sometimes his arms can catch Chun’s face after she loses invincibility. I’d still dash Ultra against his Lariat if you’re full-screen distance.

we need to update lots of the MU it seems

I have tried dash ultra before and it beat my ultra. it was discourage to try it again. I must have just did it too soon >_<

There are a ton of match ups that I don’t know anything about. literally half the cast. while the MU tips on the front page gives a ton of advice, what I am really looking for are videos of match ups.

Yeah losing to Zangief lariat just means you did it a bit early. The whiff + wait for one turn/spin of his lariat is a good visual cue.

hard to find good chun against good blankas and vegas on YT i tell you that. I havent tried on niconico tho
