I don’t see why there needs to be something unique in a game. Sometimes, refinement is the way to go.

Because if a game isn’t unique then it’s just another game you already played. You’re on a gaming forum. Most of the games people like are different games even of they are in the same genre. You don’t play Guilty Gear because it’s like ST, you play because it’s different.
The only problem is that by now it’s hard for developers to create something mind blowing.

Yes, but people play 3S over 2I and NG because it’s a refined version of the formula specified. Fighting game series do this, the SHMUP genre in general does this, FPS do this too.
I know the point you’re getting at. I’m just saying it’s not immediately a drawback if there’s nothing that particularly stands out as setting it apart from the rest of the genre.
