My sincere apologies Chen Li Cha, as I had stated in my messages on XBL and this thread, any one who had a no show in the first round would get a bye. (because as i got closer to tourney time I realized ALOT of people had not responded to my repeated FR, or msgs on Live, or posts on here, as everyone should know, I was very diligent about this, I tried.)
Now, as is noted in first couple of posts in this thread (that I sent the link to on XBL to all competitors) I had requested paitence for the second round metatag matchups, there was a reason for this:
Picture this, if you will, me knowing* right before the tourney got underway that there were probobly going to be* SEVERAL *no shows (as evidenced by my posts leading up to the start time.), So I frantically *msg all non listed players, and inform SRK of this issue.
I then get all of the results and no show calls from a whole lotta people, all at around the same time, thats Ok, im prepared for this. So my Wife, god bless her, goes on bracket duty on bracketmaker.com and updates while I call out the no shows and winners, with me periodically running back and forth checking on the status of the brackets, as you can see in my severallinksto the bracket in this thread, there were some brutally lopsided brackets forming (heck one entire bracket was a no show) So I shuffled myself into a mass of empty (because I was no real serious threat in this tourney TBH, and I wanted to get as many players fighting against each other as quickly as possible) brackets, and started the MASSIVE second round with me metatagging, As I had previously indicated (on here and Live) that I would do.
This was the long wait, I knew it would be, but the ONLY other solution I could come up with for this to work was to keep the “send FR to your opponent and invite to private match” that I had initally come up with, however, it was deemed (and rightly so) to complicated and messy to run the whole tourney like that.
So metatagging I go, its slow going at first while people got into the groove of how it was flowing along, with my message box on Live being peppered with questions (and me trying to anwser concisely), hoorah, lets do this.
At this point it became as fast paced as i think i could do, open room, invite players, give a little info, leave, BAM. Periodically, I would shout win/loss records to my Wife (yup, my wife, going all commando on Bracketmaker.com updating shit, helping me deal with the mountain of information streaming over my bandwith. (read one msg, get 3 more by the time im done reading previous one…le sigh)
At this point we ran into an issue with you, when I got to your match, I invited you, but you had stated you need to fight in ANOTHER TOURNEY for Capcom Unity, I gave you another invite and the same “no show” time as everyone else was getting, sorry I had no choice but to keep it strict and straight to the point, because of all the no shows, I had to run real fast to keep everyone in line with the tourney. Again, I apologize for the inconvienence, but I had to do what i had to do man, your opponent was in the same shoes as you, and I was doing everything in my power to reduce the wait time for the contestants.
Thanks Sosage. It was a hard match, I had to play pretty defensively. Definitely fun!
That was a quick judgement call on my part, he showed up late, and I figured I could have someone who was waiting get a match in sooner rather then wait longer. (considering how fucked the early brackets were because of the no shows, I figured someone getting into a match instead of waiting was more important then the resulting bracket jump. (please advise me if that is a big no no in this type of situation, im no tourney director, so if this was a really bad choice, then I own up to the responsibility of that decision.)
Lag is one of the issues I was worried about, did you guys try the action plan I planned out for such a circumstance? Or what that too troublesome to do?
It was the best I could think of as a solution, I only had *1 laggy match notification *in my msg box, and I did ask the affected party if a rematch was in order, the person in question declined the offer of me setting up a rematch. So well that was what it was…
Other then step by stepping the actions I had outlined for lag in this thread, im not sure of how to deal with that type of situation, im always open to suggestions.
You did your best, especially considering you ran it solo. I’m not sure honestly - it just sucked a little that he just waltzed in and after 1 game, was in the semis. With regards to lag, there’s nothing we could’ve done I imagine. It was pretty horrendous - I’d hear Max Out, next thing I know, looks like he’s teleported, no wait, jumping, no wait, I have him in a grab, no wait, he’s supering me?! It’s nothing we can fix really, or that you can fix yourself.
The second game, lag was a bit better, so I actually got to play versus getting perfected twice Third game was a bit laggy, and then his wife or something was yelling and crying in Spanish? I dunno, just really confusing shenanigans.
With regards to lag: first, the contestants see where their opponent is geographically. If there’s reason to be worried about lag, then run a first test game that doesn’t count, see if the lag settles down after that. If not, then have a spectator/judge that sees how bad it really is (does lag show up on spectate?). Otherwise, grin and bear it I suppose.
Issues and no shows aside, did the section of you that got to play through the rounds have a good experience? I would love to gather some suggestions, on imporving this format of tourney.
I would think having two people each metatagging half the brackets would run alot smoother.
Anyways, a very big **thank you **to Chunbelivable, **Prophestus **(cant wait to see the vids!), Zerodotjander, and all the **contestants **for thier understanding and paitence! And my wife, who let me *live *after saddling her with the brackets…
Good game, Iagi Bakura.
I enjoyed participating in this tournament, and hope that we can do this again sometime, and I appreciate the lengths to which AudioCG went to make this as tightly organized as possible. Good show!
Everything ran smooth from my perspective. I like getting invited to a room when it’s my turn to fight. Much better than leaving it up to the players to find each other.
It was a lot of fun. Now that we have a set time, people that know won’t be able to make it won’t sign up so there should be a lot less no shows!
Couple of suggestions:
Set the bracket in stone a full 24 hours in advance so we can get all the FRs out way ahead and be ready to go at 3 and just report the results/no shows very quickly.
Maybe have a system where if player A is xx minutes late, player B gets a free one game win. If player A is xx+ mns late, then it’s an auto bye for player B? That’s how they do it at the local Play and Trade for their tourneys.
Both good ideas! They have been taken note of. :woot:
Here’s the match vids, I wasn’t sure what/how to label them, but that can always be changed. Make sure to press “watch in high quality” because youtube destroys the quality of the vids…

Thanks to AudioCG for running this, and everyone else for showing up and playing, good times. If anyone cares, we should post this up in the tourney results forum.
Good shit Raakam, mind if I up some of our other casuals?
Sure thing Prophestus, it was fun playing with you
AWESOME!
**Great job **on recording these, some great stuff in those matches, SweetJV im gonna have to get some Sim pointers from ya, that shit was nuts. And Frank man, some utterly brutal Guile abuse there man, that last match with Damdai was C-c-c-crazy! And Damdai, well, you are still a beast.
There you have it folks;
Battle Fantastic 1 is in the books, is a bigger/better/stronger part 2 coming…?
(only time will tell, but you can bet im already looking into it, with more backup, and maybe hats… possibly, maybe even a duck, keep your fingers crossed!)
Thank you very much, AudioCG, for setting up this Battle Fantastic tournament. I had a lot of fun. Your enthusiasm is just awesome to behold! Too bad about the no-shows. Also, thanks to everyone else who was involved. Very nice videos, Prophestus!
Good games to BabyJesus9 and nohoho! Congratulations to damdai for winning the tournament!
If I may make a suggestion for future events, perhaps the entire tournament (not just the finals) should be best of five, since HDR matches go by so fast. As it were, it felt like we were just getting warmed up, getting a feel for our opponent, then bam, it was over already. At least that’s how it felt to me.
In fact, I also prefer the “three rounds per match” format used in ranked matches. Yes, I would go so far as to have every bracket be a best of five matches, with each match being a best of five rounds. Basically, the winner would be even more clear-cut, and we would get to play more. What do you guys think?
3/5 rounds, 3/5 games would be too long I think. I’d prefer a double elimination tournament. Much more complex bracket, yes, but I think if Audio can get some help, it would work out.
yeah double elim sounds nicer if anything i volunteer to help out with the brackets( I dont know how but i could try messenging people about their macthes?)
I always do a lag test before all my machtes, one macth both people jsut do command wal around and stuff to check out the latency then if its bad the other person hosts. I think that should be a standard rule at next ranbat.
Possibly, I too prefer a double elimination format, I just did not think I could pull it off myself, but, If I could split the brackets into 2 or 4 peoples responsibility, it could be easily manageable.
Possibly, 2/3 rounds, 3/5 matches?
And a “lag test” round sounds like a good idea to me as well, anything to improve the experience.:wgrin:
The suggestions keep coming along nicely, and support is trickling in already, lessons learned, and plans are forming, get hype.:woot:
(I can see it now, Battle Fantastic II: The Resurrection of Chunbeliveable)
Show me some fucking** hype **people.
Audio - I thought the experience went quite well. I had a desync issue but it was solved easily and immediately.
Damdai - congrats and best of luck at the NEC tourney.
Too bad I had to work all day, I’ll definitely be in the next one.
Thanks. There may be a problem with vega. I had a few games with someone using vega tonight and it desynced about 5 times in a row. Once he picked someone else, the desyncing stopped. The only thing that makes vega different from the other characters from a software standpoint is his claw, as it is a separate object from his body that has to be accounted for.
