I think I’m going to be watching this movie just to see if it’ll be as bad as I think. Normally, I’d stay away if I think a movie won’t deliver, but with this, I’ll be there opening night. This is shaping up to be a classic tale of them trying too much and falling too short as a result. Of course I hope it’ll be great, but that’s looking less and less likely.
Also, I heard Cranston was never even approached for the role, despite the rumors. Why wasn’t he? It’s one thing if he turns it down because he really wants to do something else, but how the HELL does Cranston not even come up on your radar? Hell, the last 6 years of Breaking Bad is like a Lex Luthor audition.
People object to Eisenberg because he seems nerdy and ineffectual. People want Cranston on the basis of a character he played who was also nerdy and ineffectual.
Know why? Because Cranston has been in a role in which he shaved his head. That is at least 90% of it, guaranteed.
He’s also shown that he can pull off being a sociopath, menacing, and charismatic all at the same time.
Time will tell if Eisenberg is capable of doing all 3 of those at the same time. I think he can be menacing, but I don’t think he can pull off the outright bullying Luthor is known to do on occasion using physical intimidation. I don’t know. Maybe he can surprise me.
The shaved head is far from 90% of it. Cranston not only has the look, but was in full on “Luthor” Mode in Season 5A except for a few instances. He’s also displayed Luthor-esque manipulation throughout the seasons as Walt before, even if he was under someone else’s thumb.
I do. Just looking at his role as Mark Zuckerberg - while he didn’t show off Lex ‘charisma’ - something that can be manufactured, in my opinion - he played all the other angles at some point in the movie. And this is the Lex I’m thinking about…
Man. I don’t know. If he was playing Alex Luthor this casting would make a lot more sense IMO. We’ll see. I’m banking on him failing, so if he exceeds my expectations I’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Don’t know what the uproar about Ben Affleck as Batman was about though. Don’t know why the internet was mad about that.
He was a manipulative son of a bitch to be sure, but one thing Walter White was best at was convincing himself that he was way more in control than he actually was. His most grandiose moments basically existed in his own mind. He was at his most genuinely effective when he realized he wasn’t in control and had to scramble to devise some MacGyver-esque solution to whatever shitpot he was neck-deep in. Great character, but Breaking Bad’s M.O. for building tension was always the disconnect between Walt’s science skills and his failure at just about every other aspect of being a criminal mastermind. He always knew less than we did.
