i woulda thought that devilotte and akuma would be better than ken in SPF2T? I definitely know that Ryu and Chun Li have to be super low tier, aside from Dan being there as well.
or not…
The idea of shin fighter seems like it’s been discussed before? perhaps?
The way it’s been explained to me is that basically the communuity has come to a consensus of “We don’t want you to use this character. You can if you REALLY, REALLY want to, but if you do, everyone will think you’re an asshole.”
See what I mean…I’ve argued this countless times…Akuma should be either unbanned or soft-banned for EVO 2007. There was a Kaillera Tournament here and Akuma wasn’t even top 4:
People could say the same about O.Sagat. People always talk about Akuma but O.Sagat is also soft banned in Japan (soft banned meaning he is looked down upon…not entirely illegal). The thing is…Japan looks at bans differently than we do in the US. They look at bans more so as doing the honorable thing and not picking the character that dumbs down the game.
When we think of banning a character…we think of banning them because of something insanely broke like being able to kill you in one combo/infinite with no meter. Either that or because the character isn’t playable in the arcade version of the game. It’s pretty debateable whether some console only characters really are broke or not but the US just saves themselves the hassle and bans them in tournaments. This way only characters that were originally intended to be competitive are playable.
The thing is…in the US it’s really only been established that Akuma is too broke to use in competitive ST. It’s also frowned upon in Japan to use O.Sagat but in the US it’s just like picking a top tier in 3S. He doesn’t destroy the entire cast for free (there are some characters that are even decent counters). It’s just the fact that he’s just strong enough where he renders about half the cast or more nearly useless in competitive play. In the US that’s just not broke enough to matter. Hence why we still play games like Marvel where top 4 gives majority of the cast no chance to win in a face to face situation. Other characters are usually left to “assist” status.
When it comes to ST, in Japan O.Sagat and Akuma are banned simply on the fact that they defeat enough of the cast consistantly enough where it becomes redundant to use them. O.Sagat is a special case though. He’s not quite as broke as Akuma. In the US he isn’t even considered broke. It’s just that maybe 6 or 7 of all the characters in the game can really compete with him. The rest of the cast has to work so hard to win that it just makes the fights boring. What makes ST so fun for the Japanese is that without O.Sagat pretty much all of the characters are competitive. Including low tiers like Cammy who can actually counter some of the higher tiers.
It’s just when you throw O.Sagat in…he can just spam fireballs with no recovery all day against several characters and reduces the strategical matchups to him and the rest of the characters that can compete with him. Without O.Sagat you can pretty much use any character in the game and have some results. The game is balanced enough where even the lowest tiers can beat anyone minus their counter matches. They can still win their counter matches probably more often than they can win against O.Sagat. O.Sagat just dumbs the game down too much for the Japanese to approve using him.
That’s online play. You already have delay because you probably use converters to play your controllers/sticks online and the delay online just makes things worse. Those aren’t serious tournament results. Don’t matter what people think now…it was already established 10 years ago that Akuma was a bit too good to use in competitive play and ST is only coming back because of Capcom Classics 2.
Top players understand the reasons why he isn’t used in both Japan and the US. If 2 countries have understood for a decade why he shouldn’t be used it doesn’t make sense to un ban him now. It’s not like ST has had another upgrade from the last game. People understand how to play it and the tournament results are only affected by what people can do given the tiers that have been established. ST is a pretty concrete game and what works works.
EX Characters: The character imbalances are staggering. Some characters seem legitimately balanced yet different(EX Venom, EX Ky), while other characters are either terribly good(EX Order Sol, EX Chipp, EX Jam) or some are just bleh(EX Sol) with only minor changes. These characters tend to be less fun to play as, but have some dumb things to abuse. There’s also the fact that EX characters in general build pounds of meter more easily than most standard characters do.
There are two big factors why EX isn’t allowed in tournaments:
[]Japanese don’t play EX characters, and they’re not available on ARCADE
[]The U.S. GG scene is incredibly small
While I’d love to see how the current scene would deal with EX characters, I don’t think we’ll see that sort of thing any time soon.
KLIFF/JUSTICE:
Same deal as above. That, and Kliff would probably be upper tier.
Jion_Wansu is a huge scrub, you can’t take anything he says seriously.
Anyway, I’ve never seen any real evidence that O.Sagat is soft banned in Japan. NKI, and I believe at least one other player who has played in Japan, said they don’t use him because they find him boring. It’s not like Gouki where it’s quite obvious using him is disliked, for example that 5-on-5 tourney where if you messed up the code, your entire team lost.
Yeah…they think about tiers differently than we do. It’s not even that O.Sagat is that bad…he just turns every match into a CVS2 turtle fest. Running the clock down to 20 seconds or less before finally winning (or hopefully losing).
Thats why you put K groove or C Groove Ratio 4 Shin Akuma. Nobody is going to beat out your air fireball x2. And he is soooooo fucking fast. Misogi anywhere, anytime on the screen. Plus that infinite he has.
Jion Wansu, no one is going to take a kaillera tournament seriously, especially when it only had like 8 people in it. The reason why he didn’t make top 4 in your little tournament is cause no one who knows what their doing with Akuma was playing in it. If Akuma was suddenly unbanned for evo, people who start learning him, and it probably would ruin the tournament.
