Banned Characters

just like all the others…theyre not playable in the arcade version

I think its kind of a combination there. You can infer that because they aren’t in the arcade version, whether or not most people play that version, that they were not intended to be balanced characters, which is mostly true.

Also, some gold chars are simply retarded. Sol, Slayer, Order Sol & Dizzy recover life; Sol has infinite meter, Faust has infinite meter and can do Meteor Super over and over; Johnny can kill you with 1 Mist Finer, etc.

I always thought that all of the character mentioned, including SSF2T Akuma were banned from tournament play because they aren’t DEFAULT selectable characters on the arcade version of the game.

I used to play a lot of 3s and used to sometimes hear rumblings about Yun and Chun needing to be banned because tourney finals used always seem to come down to those two characters. The argument against the banning has always been that the two are default, arcade characters so they shouldn’t be banned.

Also, this may be a bit off-topic, but banning a glitch is totally different than banning a character obviously. Glitches are programming mistakes that aren’t meant to be included in the game, so while I have no problem banning glitches, I do have a problem with banning default, arcade roster characters. Overpowered or not, they should be here to stay.

Can anyone think of any default arcade characters that are banned from tourney play?

Some say soft-ban Young Geese in NeoWave but they aint gonna get that!!!

I wonder if Chun Li is helping him build something in that thong

Akuma is banned because he’s excessively overpowered. Chun and Yun aren’t banned because they aren’t. It’s got nothing to do with being default selectable characters, there’s plenty of games where the arcade secret characters are tournament legal, for example Alpha 2 and MvC1.

Actually most glitches aren’t banned, and what was “meant to be included in the game” is a terrible method of judging whether something should be banned or not. Look at Marvel; most glitches are allowed, only ones that prevent the game from being played are banned.

Why would Ken be banned in Super Puzzle Fighter (if it ever got a tournament?

When people see me play KEN in SF:TM, they think he should be banned, but really, it’s just my skills.

Shin Akuma in CVS2 is broken as hell. no stun, highest priority, all special moves are like RCed, and he can do infinite.

Whoa, wait a second.

Earlier in this thread it’s stated that Evil Ryu and Orochi Iori are banned… in CvS2!? That’s the first I’m hearing of this. Were they not in the arcade version?

Technically they are in the arcade version, but you have to activate some obscure dipswitch to use them. Seeing as almost nobody knows about it, they’ve just been considered to not be in there.

Ken isn’tbanned in SPF2T tournaments, but he is the best character in the game by a huge margin. Still, the nature of a game like Puzzle Fighter means it’s not really necessary to ban him. I do remember hearing that some tournaments back in the day would triple the first prize pot if you managed to win with any other character, though.

Not trying to be an armchair criticizer/scrub or anything but:

That Akuma plays like shit. All the people who would own with Akuma choose not to use him, but I bet if a top ST player wanted to use Akuma he’d be pretty goddamn crazy. It doesn’t really matter in Japan if a guy uses Akuma because the level of skill is that way. All that guy does is jump hk, air fireball and random guess shoryu. I think I could beat that guy’s Akuma, he just doesn’t look anywhere near good player status.

After watching the first match again, all he does is jump back/jump around in general. Really predictable, it was really funny when the Sim player supered him on prediction that his dumbass would neutral jump. One thing I’ve always thought is that jumping back/moving backward in general with any character, Akuma or not, gets you owned.

Nope, they were console only characters.

Kankuro is banned in Naruto: GNT Ex because he lags the game a lot, or so I hear.

Duolon from KOF2003 was banned in some tournaments because he is a normal character with the uberness of the bosses. Backturned infinites, safe rekkas, insane range on normals, etc. He had it all.

Duo Lon actually had 2 infinites…the Backturned one plus the normal Iori 96 Scum Gale infinite.

What exactly does “Soft banned” mean?

You are discouraged from using said characters?

so AKA, nothing at all that actually matters… k

It’s hard to build against a Ken that’s just waiting to break a big block. You can try to build columns, but yeah, it’s not a pleasant battle.

On a side note concerning the topic, I aways thought it would be cool to see SHIN FIGHTER…where you pit all the bosses of the fighting games against each other.

And just make some other characters super tough for the heck of it.
