Balrog Thread

yeah it seems i can ever get the p one out so i use k. That’s cool to know the mk low rush punch works too. Thanks for dropping some knowledge.

What are the best techniques vs Dict? I have trouble landing anything, especially when Dic is the aggressor. Seems Boxer has very little to counter with if Dict is shooting in with sciz kicks and torpedo. What are the best things to keep him away with?

Couple things you can try when you happen to be at mid or close range:

– cr. MP beats scissor kicks when timed correctly
– standing jab also beats scissor kicks
– headbutt will beat anything both psycho crusher and scissor kicks, but is punishable if you do it at the wrong time

If Dic gets predictable with his scissor kicks then I suggest a headbutt to knock him down.

This is a somewhat weird matchup in that neither side can afford to rushdown all the time, as both Boxer and Dic can counter setups on reaction (headbutt, lk scissor kicks). You can alternately stay at max range and bait headstomps (counter with j. MP) and then rush in for throw/jump loop shenanigans.

That helps me. Basically I need wait him out more so than I’d do other chars and punish his mistakes. I do try to rushdown too much in this match and it allows dict to gain the edge.

Would you recommend any opening moves for Rog? I usually do rush c.jab most of the time. It seems to put me at an advantage if timed correctly. Would different moves be suitable for other chars and even to wait until they attack a viable option for other chars? I think I get too redundant with that as my opener. I sometimes switch it up with a jump in.

streetfighterdojo.com: Super Turbo Boxer (Balrog)

I finally got the ST Boxer (Balrog) section up at streetfighterdojo.com.

Match footage of top players + combos/tricks

Enjoy!

Great job, man. I will hate you for helping Rogs – who already own my ass – but that is a great work, anyway. It seems whenever Ryu connects a hadouken from a certain distance, if he is not able to deal with the slowdown and get another one fast, Rog will close in or trade damage with him, knock him down and ki… I mean, punch his ass with rush down, headbutt holds and the super he charges somewhat fast.

Anyway, just 6 more characters to go!

Thanks dude!

Boxer is a BEAST!

7!

I’m gonna make a for Akuma too.
(though it’s gonna be pretty empty.

After that, I think I’m moving on to HDR or SF3.

You should put Daigo’s Boxer in your list of players. He’s got tons of Boxer vs O.Sagat footage which always comes in handy.

I’m using the top player data from Nohoho’s site:

It’s by no means a perfect list, but I leave it to Nohoho to update as he sees fit.

The names are just a guideline for less experienced players.
More experienced already know the top player names (or can watch the vids) and can make their own decisions.

Daigo has a great Balrog.
And Shiki’s Balrog got to the FINALS of Tougeki 2008, beating: Yuuvega’s Dictator
Noguchi’s Claw
Otochun’s Chun Li
Yoshimura’s Dhalsim

… but neither made Nohoho’s (older) list.

Boxer beats Ryu?

I dont understand how people can claim that Ryu is at a disadvantage in this matchup.
Constant fireballs keep Boxer turtling.
And its not as easy as you might think against an above average Ryu.
You cant just Buffalo HB thru it, because he’ll walk up and trip you.
If you guess the wrong speed of the Fireball, then you’ll land on it!
And don’t even bother jumping with a Boxer. He stays up in the air long than jigglypuff, yet his legs can be hit damn there at all times.
So you pretty much have to be a Necromancer, or practice this matchup so much that you recognize the startup frames of a jab fb from a fierce fb.

Now just to make sure I’m not going crazy, I have been looking thru the dojo
Thanks to Zaspacer for putting it together btw.

So its not just me having this problem. The Best Boxers in the world are sitting on fireballs like their butt is cold.
And I never noticed the problem before because I wasnt facing upper level Ryu’s.

Anyone want to share thoughts on this?

I started a FAQ on Balrog a looong time ago because there wasn’t one on gamefaqs, just wondering if you guys think I should spruce it up and finish it?

Boxer does have advantage on Ryu IMO. You are forgetting neutral jump, forward Fierce.

Also you are not thinking of how Boxer kills Ryu for one ill-timed fireball from almost any distance once he has meter. Fireballs are NOT the reason Ryu can do well against Balrog, it’s dragon punches. Ryu can DP nearly ALL of your shit, godly execution Ryu easily can rape boxers.

I’d consider it 6-4 Boxer’s favor. It’s a STRONG 6 though, like 6-6.5

Again, you have to be Mr. Wizard Jr. to time those Neutral j. >fierce.
ANd when people say Its in so and so’s favor 6-4, I dont consider that an edge.
Thats even in my eyes.
I mean shit, there’s not too many 5-5 matchups anyway right?

Definitely!

And when you’ve got it done, put it up on the web (your own page or a FAQ database) and link it here.

It’s not easy since they can change the fireball speed any time, true, but consider the gamble this way: You move forward completely safely if you time it right, much closer to RAPE range on Ryu. And if he guesses wrong and fireballs and you jump properly you get a free combo.

Walking/moving forward is a weapon of itself.

Those kinds of odds are how the casinos have made trillions.

Um whats the timing for going through a hadouken with turn punch?
@ that one guy: you put the bottom parts of your fingers over the k’s while the tops are free to do the p’s.
…or you can just use your palm on the k’s, whatever, but you may accidentally release and lose charge etc.

You don’t, that’s SFIV.

And .

But yes, turn around punch (or TAP), doesn’t go through fireballs in Super Turbo.

If you want to go directly through fireballs then you need to use the headbutt or the SUPER for Boxer in ST.

I’ve never played hyper fighting since becoming serious about fighters, so that’s news to me.
