Hm. The matches definitely make me want to try Balrog though. I’m a boxer myself, but I’m not a fan of his evil character, but his sorta jab/look for opening style is very similar to, well, real boxing.
He’s relatively simple, not a lot to learn, more footsie heavy than anything. I played him with Steve for the first week and had a blast learning the system, but eventually dropped him in more serious play for Guile and then Cammy after that. Currently running Cammy/King but I pull out that original team during casuals all the time.
I feel like what’s holding Balrog back is the character just isn’t able to translate very well from his SF4 iteration. Most of the cast has, but Balrog was just sort of left behind, especially with nerfs to things like his headbutt. Still, don’t let that deter you, he’s still at a level that’s viable, you just have to be willing to work hard for your wins, you know?
My main characters include Cole, Bob, and Paul, so I know all about working for my wins (and just losing in general). I’ll give him a try tonight, should be easier since there was a period in SFIV he was my best character. Gotta relearn charges.
Thanks for the encouragement.
Got a link to Gootecks’s match vids? I’d really like to see what other Rog players have been up to.
Thanks!
I think I see what you mean about Gootecks not using Rog’s full combo potential. Watching the stream, it seems he could have done more damage off his corner juggles. He was using cr. mp, cr. mp xx dash low straight which is decent for mid-screen juggles, but in the corner, Rog can do a bit better.
Sorry if this was already posted, I looked through the thread but not every post, but I played against a Balrog today that was comboing me well after a non-ex Overhead special (I saw someone say lol he gets a MP, but he gets a lot more):
Overhead: c.lk, c.mp, Super
Overhead counter hit in corner: c.lk, c.mp, exsmash, c.lp, c.mp, headbutt

Yeah his regular Overhead smash allows for a crouching lk and even a cr. mp if fast enough, but the link can be kind of tight. It lets him tack on the damage as you probably experienced, but it’s not the most reliable way to get damage.
@SamuelVimes: The link to cr. mp is actually relatively easy. The timing just takes some getting used to. Just keep in mind that his overhead rush punch is very unsafe and easily punishable (both on block and during it’s agonizingly slow start up), so it shouldn’t be relied on too much.
balrog actually talks about bike money in his win quote.
i used to always think he said bike money until now.
no wonder i cant beat balrog.
For all Balrog players this is my first time using him and I am running him threw his trails I am stuck on number 11 I think it goes J.H kick into crouch M punch into straight dash … How do I charge this straight dash do I do it from the moment I jump into the kick?
Yeah. just jump forward and immediately go to charging down back. That should be standard fare for charge characters.
Don’t let Rog and this forum die!
I need help, how do you Rogs maintain your charge when going from downback to back. Any help would be appreciated.
his strongest non ex combo is 404 in the corner. J.hk, cl.st hk, cr.mp, HK low smash, cr.lk, cr.mp, HP dash straight
You can go a step further and use cs. rh instead of cr. mp, actually.
Can anyone help me in Balrog’s strategy vs. projectile happy characters? I have him playing point and he’s great at out-footsying regular opponents, but I worry that he loses his gameplan against Hadokens, booms, and tiger shots. How do Balrog players weather the storm of projectiles and get in? Honestly all I can do is hang back, jump a few, and pull off a TAP once they start getting predictable.
I wouldn’t consider myself all that good, but I usually use a mix of TAP, Headbutt, and Ex Dashing to counter projectiles. if I’m far away I’ll jump over them/headbutt , but if I’m mid screen or close enough for someone to AA me I’ll start getting aggressive with TAPs and EX Dashing.
I have a few questions about Balrog, wondering if there is anyone alive around here to help me out.
-I heard in AE one of balrog’s strong points was his corner pressure. Does he still excel there here? I imagine he can, since c.hp is such a strong a.air, one of many for him, and his normals are so strong, that he could become a bit of a wall if they cannot walk back. does he gain any particular offense in the corner, and how is he at getting opponents there on his own? I just need to find a way he can punish rolls.
-It has been said here that Balrog excels as an anchor. Why is that? I find his footsies are strong, his throws yield safe raw tags, he has the best prelaunch combo in the game damagewise, and he does not seem to eat meter, so I never considered him anything other than Point.
- does the trajectory change of nj.hp serve a purpose? I suppose it helps with fireballs, but even then it seems so small.

I have not played SFxT in a while but Rog doesn’t have the same Anti-air like in AE. AE Rog’s corner pressure is like no other, he gets a safer dash punch if he closes in. IMO, an best way to punish rolls is b.jump RH or fierce.
He excels as an Anchor because of his normals, some of his invinciblity moves, and his armor ex moves. But in order to get close sometimes, you may need meter.
Trajectory change? how you can move Rog during the nj. hp? It serves its purpose like in AE. To stop your rival and slowly gaining ground.
IMO, his anti-airs are Cr.HP, st.mp, and Headbutt.
