Been messing around with CS5 since I bought it the other week when it came out. Didn’t use any of the new brushes on this one. Just my regular flat brush that comes default with PS.

CS5? im jealous…gonna have to get a keygen haha…
not bad, technically this is awesome, it just is a very chill lookin balrog lol
Nice coloring job, it looks like something that would take me a lot longer than 35 mins. The strokes also seem to give it a sense of movement, or the flashing lights of cameras after a victory. I do think though that it might benefit from some darker shades around the neck area under the jawline to make the face ‘pop’ somewhat more. And maybe it’s me, but the ear appears to be a little far back on the head, but i do realize it’s a quick sketch and all.
purp sidelight for the win
Hey there,
Thanks for the compliments, everybody.
Neko, you’re right about the ear. What’s actually happening is that the hair on the side of the head(and the dark stroke I put in there to define his cheekbone) is covering part of his ear and it looks like it’s further back than it is. Distance-wise, the outer corner of the eye and the tragus on the ear usually is about the same distance from the tip of the nose to the tip of the chin, so in this speedpainting, the ear isn’t too far off at all. if he were bald, then it would look just right…haha. When I paint heads, I usually start with the structure of the head first and then add the details and I painted the hair on top of his head last. Since these speedpaintings are just to keep in practice and to keep my speed, I just chose to leave the ear/hair like that. Otherwise, I would have gone back and noodled it to fix it. You’ll also notice that I didn’t paint Blarog’s hair almost pure black like it actually would be because his head would look top-heavy.
As far as adding more darkness to the jawline, I purposely didn’t want to do that because for the new batch of speedpaintings I’ve been doing, I’ve only been adding really dark values to the main areas that I want people to look at. In this case, it’s right around the eyes and then right to the glove, but the glove is very subdued. If I were to do a more moody painting, I would have added that darkness to the jawline and shadowing underneath. Then I would also pop the highlight on the glove way more.
A bunch of the previous batch of speedpaintings that I’ve been doing are more moody, so this is just an exercise in something different for a change.
Thanks for the comments!
Love it great work especially for 35 mins
