Balrog (Boxer) Combos

edit: missverständnis… of course straight dash forces stand I am so sry.

TAKE EX UPPER!!!

Forgive me, eventually i’ll put in some time tags so you don’t have to watch me drop combos for 10 minutes.

Also rediscovered a pretty boss force stand combo. Right now i’ve only confirmed that it works against Akuma standing and crouching, in the corner and mid-screen, but not sure about the rest of the cast:

j.hp, cr.mk, cl.mp xx ex.ru, cr.lp, cr.mp xx hp.hb

Also found another setup for ex.ru loops into smash:

j.hk/j.hp, cr.mk, st/cr.lp, cr.mp xx ex.ru, cr.lp xx lk/mk/hk/ex.smash

I saw a post mentioning c.lp c.lp c.lk headbutt, and I’m having trouble with c.lk to dash punch. I read that the trick was to delay the c. lp to c. lk. I’m really new, so is there a way to plink c. lp to c. lk to get more time to link this? Or is this just another case of training offline to figure out the correct timing? Is there any other trick to increase the chance of this combo link? Thanks.

Yes, just training. The same concept about linking the last cr.lp to cr.lk still stands true. Just practice, you can probably go slower to understand the inputs. Start with just cr.lp xx lp.ds (jab dash straight). Just practice that for a bit, then, try cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.lk, then put it all together (the Gootecks method).

I’ve seen PR Rog do a combo that starts with cl.hk to st. mk into Super. I can’t get the st mk to link from the cl hk. Is this a one frame link?Seems hard as hell to pull off :frowning:

This combo is counter-hit only. cl.hk is +7 on regular hit and st.mk has 9f of startup, so you need the extra frames of hitstun from a counter hit to combo this stuff.

It’s actually a pretty nice tool to have, a lot of people will stop stand/early teching once you get super and they are scared of the shimmy so you often find yourself more likely to hit cl.hk than in other situations.

Awesome, thanks. I was driving myself crazy not hitting it. That makes much more sense now. Back to the lab!

Also found another combo starter for combos into high dashes:
j.hk, cl.hk, cr.lp, cr.mp xx ex.ru, cr.lp/cr.lk xx lk/ex.smash/dash low

This is a modified combo that will work on some characters where the keno special won’t work (ex.ru, cr.lp, st.lp, cr.mp)

You can also use the following combo starter variant:
j.hk, cl.hk, cr.mp xx ex.ru, cr.lk/cr.lp xx lk/ex.smash/dash low
j.hk, cr.mk, st.lp/cr.lp, cr.mp xx ex.ru cr.lk/cr.lp xx lk/ex.smash/dash low

The main requirement for this combo to work is that you need to push the character back sufficiently in order to increase the distance ex.ru has to travel so you can get enough back-charge to execute the smash right after the cr.lp/cr.lk. Also keep in mind that if you use two bars, the ex.smash and ex.dash low are relatively safe on block (-1/-3)

Wrong thread.

Against Ryu, hitting my cl HK as close as possible, I can’t link into cr MP ever. I can get all kinds of other one frame links at least 25-50% of the time, but I haven’t gotten this link a single time (literally not once), unless I start with a jump in in which case I can get it around 50%. It seems like when I go for the link without a jump-in, if I get the timing right it will whiff, and if I do it too late it will be blocked. I usually walk all the way up to Ryu before starting the combo, but I’ve also tried standing a little bit back and it still doesn’t work. What the hell am I doing wrong? I’m just so baffled as to how I’m literally NEVER hitting the link without a jump-in when I know it’s perfectly possible to hit.

Take note; If your cr.mp is coming out and being blocked you need to speed up.
If your cr.mp isn’t coming out at all you need to slow down.

25-50% isn’t particularly high anyway so just keep practicing.

cl.hk into cr.mp doesn’t work against some of the cast in certain situations. If I remember correctly, a good example is Makoto, j.hk, cl.hk, cr.mp doesn’t work on her. HOWEVER… i’m about 95% sure cl.hk, cr.mp works on Ryu as a link (e.g. cr.lp, cl.hk, cr.mp) or as a link up close. There are two things that’ll probably help you: (1)After a jump-in you have more than +10 frame advantage, delay your cl.hk so that you hit them after they reel back, this helps A LOT against characters like fuerte who reel back a great distance or (2) plink, it’s a 1f link, plink your cr.mp.

If all else fails, practice against Akuma, ALL of Balrog’s combos work against him and his hitbox is perfect for combos.

Good luck.

Edit: Also try after a lvl 3 focus.

I know that dude. I’m not bragging about my 25-50%, my point was that I should be able to get this link at least 1 out of 1000 times but I’ve gotten it literally 0. The slowing down/speeding up isn’t what I’m talking about either. I said in my post that my cr. mp comes out, but whiffs. Doesn’t that mean the timing was correct, seeing as it’s coming out? Sometimes it comes out and gets blocked, in which case it’s too slow of course. I’m not talking about those though. The only way it doesn’t whiff, is if I instead do j. hp, cl. rh, cr. mp, which would appear to be the same link but for whatever reason the cr. mp doesn’t whiff. I don’t get what the difference between walking up and doing cl. rh, cr. mp and doing j. hp, cl. rh, cr. mp is but apparently there’s something that changes it to where it doesn’t whiff in the latter case and isn’t allowing me to hit it in the former.

I’ve played fighting games long enough to know you can’t really ask for help for execution problems, but this just doesn’t seem like an execution problem to me. It really feels like there’s SOMETHING I’m doing wrong before I even worry about the timing. How can I not hit this link a single fucking time? Why does it seem to whiff every time I feel like I get the timing right? But I guess I’ll just keep trying until it magically stops whiffing one day.

Edit: Also I plink but like I said, this just doesn’t feel like a timing issue. I don’t know though.

Balrogs cl roundhouse has a wierd reelback animation which makes the first active frame of cr.mp whiff in some situations
It should be fixed in ultra imo

Yeh, it’s pushback. The cl.hk, cr.mp link only works on Ryu if he’s standing after a jump-in or after a crumple. If Ryu is crouching, j.hk, cl.hk, cr.mp is blocked, if he’s standing cl.hk, cr.mp whiffs. Against Ryu specifically.

Interesting meaty setup for cr.mp that’s on the last active frame: cr.hk, 2x fwd.dash, cr.mp. Its the last active frame so +3 w/o CH, +5 on CH. You can always link cr.lp, you can link cl.hp on CH. I haven’t found a specific use for this, I was hoping that it could be similar to fei longs meaty cr.lp against Zangief to stuff lariat, but no dice as-is. Enjoy.

Sick, I’ve been trying to find meaty setups but I’m pretty bad at it. I’ll check if there’s any uses for it, but I believe it’ll give good pressure after sweep.

After you found out that meaty I found out that you can do the same with Cl.St. Fierce it forces stand and you can do st.jab into EX rush upper for a nice big combo.
Also you can OS sweep too. I think it’s pretty cheap. I’ll make a video about it soon!
