Balrog (Boxer) Beginner's Guide

Rogs learning curve in SFIV is pretty small compared to other chars. Add to the fact that he is really solid and you can see why people are flocking to him because they want quick results. I also think that they are overrating him in Socal everyones like fuck Balrogs too much but I honestly can’t see why. Im guessing that come console alot of people will drop him and move onto other characters(Sagat, Viper, console chars, etc…). I for one will keep that Rog strong!

I have one question … not Balrog specific but charge chars in general. Do you lose complete/part of your charge if the opponents hits you or if you block an attack ? Or can you just unleash your special/super/ultra after block/hitstun without charging again ?

Sorry about this stupid question but I have never played charge characters before and I want to pick up Balrog for SF4.

You wont lose your charge at all while in block stun. As soon as your out of it feel free to unleash your attack. Beware of blanka players when you get knocked down. They will hop over your body left and right and make you lose your charge.

thx for the answer … can you use the reversal headbut after getting knocked down (if this works ?)like a dragonpunch against meaty jump ins or other nasty things or should i just block or backdash ?

Some people out there like Fuson909 who is an excellent Guile player will do a very deep jump in Roundhouse and it LOOKS like I can headbutt him but it always whiffs. If its not a real deep move then yes the headbutt will work. Back dash is a good move which I need to start using but I just see a lot of people eat jump in attacks cause they didnt back dash right and I dont want to risk losing the life when I could of just blocked. BUT back dash is VITAL against a good El Fuerte player (Kai & Oliver) IMO.

This guide helps alot. It’s strange to think of Boxer as a zoner though.

Haha thanks for clearing that up, and great way of putting it. From the videos i’ve seen, it’s pretty easy to throw him out of it still sigh but I would assume it’s a little harder to time and a little riskier now with it being able to combo into super.

Thanks for the help. I would assume it would have been a good idea if the chun had focused into a super/ultra if plausable?

Does Valle go Ryu and Bison in tournament? How long does it usually take to make a tier list?

What is you guys meatie of choice?

Crouching forward.

As John Rog said, d+mk is good, but I also do meaty safe jump-ins with roundhouse and then start the throw mixup game. Another thing I’ve been doing is meaty overhead and that can work out pretty well sometimes.

Huh? Can you explain? If I try meaty overhead I just about always eat some kind of wakeup move.

im maining gief right now and im getting bored with him…

ive been thinking about maining rog for some time now… and got a few games in with him…and know some basic combos… my only problem is that i kant get out the super/ultra after the headbutt to save my life. no matter how fast i start the charge it wont come out… im gonna need some help here. i might have missed some info on the previous pages. but is there a way to buffer it?
i know you have to activate when your opponent is at head height level…

and to think i play rog in ST. -_-

I haven’t played sf4 yet, but i’m worried about this buffering deal also. Also, some help with doing standing 720’s would b great also…

When you do the headbutt, use u/b as the direction, this way, you never actually lose your back charge. you can time it so that you literally do u/b, f, b, f+P or, you can drag the stick (or pad) back to d/b if that’s easier, and then do the super/ultra motion.

720’s are easy on sf4, i believe its the easiest game to input 360’s or 720s
you can even do it slow lol, you dont have to hit 8 points for 720’s

bah i need someone that actually knows how to play the game for the rog

Headbutt, Ultra

17P, 4646PPP/KKK

Never let go of charge when headbutting, just like in ST. You need to make sure to use uppers or straights at a certain interval depending on character, most seem to like KPKKK.

question about buffalo headbutt

after LP, LP chain, can that link into any strength buffalo headbutt or it MUST be the light punch one?

Always Fierce headbutt. Jab and strong whiff sometimes and Fierce does the most damage too

so basically by you saying never letting go of charge…

it would be u/b(headbutt), f, b, f - PPP/KKK

So what are some of Boxers most abusable moves?
I played online for the first time tonight, and it seems that I get punished for any special move I do. Headbutt isn’t safe, and depending on the range, neither is TAP. What are some moves that I can rely on to put pressure on opponents?
