Balrog (Boxer) Beginner's Guide

Go from DB to UB, then forward, back, forward 3K or 3P

What i do that works for me is after the headbutt I do. DB DF DB DF 3P and it always works. Then you hold Kick for the first hit, release for the second hit and then hold K for the rest of the punches. If you just do the super and not the ultra hold Kicks the entire time. PSN ID Joshyjosh00

Hi,

i’m using a lot of his normal moves now. And i’m wondering why the japonese player (maeda tyson for exemple) are using s.hk instead of st.hp ?
In training it seems that the second one hits from a longer distance. And the damages are almost the same (100/110).

Also, during a jump-in, when do you you use j.hp and j.hk (i always use j.hp).

And last question, is it possible to make a safe j.hp vs a shoryuken in wake up ? Beacause i felle i can do against a lot of wake up moves, but not against the shoryu :frowning:

Thank you guys

Matso - Thanks a lot for that quick clear up I’m landing headbutt into ultra a lot more frequently.

Can someone list out all the shortcuts to do the Charge B. F, B F motion? (Ultra 1)

uhm… Any back (back, back up, back down) any forward, any back, forward PPP or KKK.
Trust me though, B,F,B,F is easier :clown:

What happened to Balrog?

Just decided to play with him again after a very very very long period with Vega. But, he’s changed in this game. Im losing against Ryu on all my spams, he beats my lp with mp, and all my other moves with mk. I swear you could win against mk with hk from the correct distance before :S .

Further to that, does Headbutt suck now? its weaker, and the horizontal distance has been reduced! The ex HB no longer hits low attacks, it just goes right over it all.

Also, he’s gone weaker, much weaker… yet his still really strong lol.

Maybe i just forgot how to play with him, might need to look at some videos, or find a basic balrog play thread somewhere. But im pretty sure how he plays has changed, he aint has good as he use to be.

O yeaaa, ultra is weaker, much weaker.

They didn’t nerf him much. Main nerfs were the damage nerfs on his moves.

Can’t say anything about the “spams” (you shouldn’t be spamming in this context in the first place), but I haven’t noticed anything different (except for trying to counterpoke Dictator, whose pokes got substantially better). If anything, I think you get more frame advantage on his jab now. You can still punish cr. mk with st. hk.

Headbutt is weaker damage wise. I mainly use headbutt in combos and as an antiair (LP) , so if horizontal range has been reduced, I haven’t noticed. EX HB whiffed in Vanilla as well against certain low moves (cr. mk, etc).

In SF4 EX HB whiffed over Ryu’s c.mk and the non ex versions were stuffed by Ryu’s c.mk. Didn’t noticed any change to s.hk except that it seems to recover slower because I’m getting crumpled a lot more (although this could be due to FA being faster). Try using s.hp to counter hit Ryu c.mk.

mmmmm guess its just me then. Haven’t played him in waay too long. Also sorry for being so vague, i meant my cr.hk was losing to cr.mk. But i guess using st.hk is better, although standing will make it harder to avoid the jumping mix up game… for me anyway lol.

And when i said spamming, i didnt mean spam spam lool. Like using a cr.mp, which was losing to Ryu cr.mp :looney: . That cr.mp spam is a blatent Vega habit

You counter poke the cr.mk with cr.hk. My cr.hk doesn’t really get stuffed by the cr.mk, but then again I don’t just throw it out there to get beat either. But I have given up trying to beat Vega’s crouching normals. I just throw some well timed EX punches when they start mashing away. BUT you seem to think you can just throw your normals out there and expect to win every time. Doesn’t really work that way.

Pretty much that. Only thing they changed was a slight damage reduction on his ultra and head butt along with a minuscule stamina reduction. All of that is hardly noticeable and doesn’t affect his overall game play, you’ll still be playing the same way.

Hi all

I picked up Balrog a time ago in Vanilla as my alternate char. With SSF4 released, I want to main rog.
I still have a couple of questions / problems with Rog. I’m hoping you guys could help me out a little
I have found the most answers to my questions with searching the threads but these questions still remain…

  1. How do you do the double TAP? (basically TAP with a following punch) I see much players doing this after ultra1.

  2. I’m having trouble with my HB>Ultra consistancy lately. Couple of months ago I had a 70% hit rate. Now its down to 40%. I have no clue what I’m doing wrong. I have tried slowing down my excecution but this doesnt seem to help. Are there any general tips for excecuting HP into ultra? I use a TE stick.

  3. the one combo that doesnt seem to work for me is Dash swing punch > cr.MK > ultra after his RU loop. how can you have enough charge time to excecute the ultra afterwards.

Thx in advance. And thx all the great people giving a all these great tips to improve.
See you guys on the battlefield

  1. When doing HB > U1 you have to hold kicks to juggle, but the pattern can vary depending on the character and whether or not you’re in the corner, examples include PPKK or KPKK. When holding kicks make sure to do 3K and charge back the entire time. This way when U1 is done you can let go of the kicks to do a TAP then immediately follow with a dash punch. All of that is just to build super meter or get closer to your opponent.

  2. Not much can be said outside of practice. Make sure your HB is completely done before initiating U1. If your opponent is dropping below you then you’re doing it too late, if they fly over you then you’re doing it too early. If the U1 is just not coming out then you aren’t properly keeping you back charge through out the combo (make sure to do UB instead of U for the HB) or you’re just rushing the inputs.

  3. c.MK is +7 on hit, U1 has a 10 frame start up, that combo isn’t even possible. Also dash swing blow doesn’t combo after anything, including an ex rush upper loop. I’m assuming that you something else and just used the wrong notations.

thx 4 the tips Corner-Trap. Gonna hit training mode to test some of your advice

As for the combo, maybe its better I post a link to the combo in question:

http://www.youtube.com/user/morydees34#p/u/0/3F24MoJ4lP0 (0:48)

I just dont get how he gets enough charge time to get the HB > Ultra connected

The only thing that really needs practice that is hard to pull off with Balrog besides charging of course, is:

  1. Linking light low kick to light low punch

  2. Continuing a combo after a whiffle punch

Youtube link didnt work for me, but I assume you’re talking about the dsb > c.lk > hb > ultra

  1. Fierce dsb or ex dsb
  2. While you do need to hold the punch for the overhead to come out, you do not need to hold your stick down and forward. The stick should go forward and down, and then immediatly down and back. Its a little awkward at first, but its a good practice to get into.

This is often used as a reset during an upper loop, banking on your opponent holding down+back during your combo. Like corner trap said, nothing can be combo’d into dsb.

Hope that helps.

Hi all, when they say if in doubt, go back to the fundamentals. I always believe Rog is a shoto-killer, or at least give a good match up. CAn someone give me insights on how to deal with ex-Tatsu. As in this video, i played a fellow mate till timeout and i lost partly i couldnt deal with the air ex-tatsu.
Can i TAP on anticipation and it will hit him ?

That is you vs. an Adon.

My apologies
