Balrog (Boxer) Beginner's Guide

Cool, glad it works for you. :wgrin:

i just learned how to headbutt to ultra it took two days but i got it down thanx for the guide

Okay so I have a question- I just played rog in CM after a small hiatus, had the Ryu cornered, on low health so I went for ex.OH, c.lk xx bhb, ultra.
Right as the OH hit Ryu his ultra animation started up as if nothing happened and I died since the c.lk came out. How? Isn’t there a fairly lengthy hitstun on the OH? I’m sure it hit him, I saw and heard it.

He might’ve started the Ultra while you were still in attacking frames, and you managed to hit him right after he finished.

But I think it was the invincibility frames on the Ultra - he still got hit because I think the OH is active for a fairly long time, but you got hit by the Ultra. Quite a bad trade

EX OH is pretty risky on their wakeup if they have Ultra.

It wasn’t on wakeup, I was barraging him and he just sat there crouched.

Maybe he was expecting it or was mashing Ultra? If you play this guy pretty often or if he’s a masher, he probably either did it on reaction or was mashing it out. You’d be surprised how fast people can react to something if they’re looking for it. I play a friend in Boxer mirrors and he counters my jab dash punches with Ultra - amazing.

If you think they’re looking for something, try to feint and make it look like you’re doing what they’re looking for. If they get baited, you might set yourself up for a GREAT punish.

Edit: After re-reading your post, you might’ve missed the cr. lk link. I’ve screwed up the cr. rh link after the OH in Boxer mirrors and got Ultra’d for it :[

Yes but as I said, his ultra animation started up right as the thing hit him- like less than half a second later.
Maybe he mashed it out and it came out because of lag, that’s what I’m trying to find out; there wasn’t even enough time to hit the c.lk between when the OH hit and when his ultra started up.

Sounds like a case of online lag+mashing = wtf. He must’ve mashed it out before the OH actually hit him.

Thanx!

I just got a fightstick, and I’m experimenting with Boxer. This guide was very informative!

This is something I’ve seen many times. Whenever you connect the Dash Swing Blow (overhead) you are at +10 frames on hit. The cr.LK has an execution of 4 frames (4 frames before it is able to hit) now given the fact that you are alloted 7 frames to squeeze this link in may make it seem like an easy one to hit but the long recovery time of the Dash Swing Blow makes you wait for a while and try to time the cr.LK link after briefly pausing once the Overhead hits. The Ryu player either knew this and intentionally aimed to throw out the ultra at a link he saw was miss-able (I do this all the time against my friend’s Abel. He’ll start out with the Forward + MK, dash and link into numerous pokes but I’ve learned to use my Ultra, or even an EX Buffalo Head, at the time he is most likely to miss a link) or he simply saw his dismal situation, being in the corner low on life with Balrog rushing in at him, and threw out a hail mary Ultra, so to speak, and it just happened it was when you missed a link. He was in stun from the overhead and buffering the movement for the Ultra, recovered from the stun and executed the Ultra just as you had comitted to the cr.LK and thus could not block, and this kind of thing is possible anytime you mistime a link. It’s no different from shoto’s spamming Dragon Punch the entire time you are doing a combo in hopes that you may miss a link. Only difference is with the Ultra, you get to see your poke coming out in slow motion as the screen goes dark.

Go into training and record Balrog doing a Dash Swing Blow followed up by a crouching LK and intentionally time it so they DO NOT link (2 hit combo should not appear). Replay this and spam QCF with Ryu the whole time and once you get hit with the overhead start mashing PPP and you should see the exact same thing that happened in your match.

I was wondering, what do you guys think is the best way to train my footsies with normals?

Edit: Just realized I should include what I’ve been doing haha. I just stared a new PSN account and I’m trying to play Championship mode under these conditions. No jumping except neutral jump, no dashing, no specials unless combo’d into. Honestly I feel like I’m not getting anywhere, I’m dropping every round without getting the other guy to even 50% life.

I’d suggest not getting too discouraged if you’re training your normals online, especially on PSN. Can you make it out to sessions/tournaments/gatherings in your area?

I really don’t hear about many sessions in my area and usually I can’t head out to them because I’m busy with other crap. It’s really frustrating losing to stuff like jump back fireball because i keep screwing up my timing for neutral jumps haha.

I hear you. It gets frustrating seeing people you generally have a feeling you could beat pretty decisively if you played them offline. Check the Pacific North/South threads - you’re bound to found SOMETHING in your area.

I really, really, REALLY need to start practicing Dash Ultra. So many ******* times it could have been useful in Ryu/Chun-Li matchups.

It’s honestly the one part of Balrog I wish I could master. It’s just so difficult to me for some reason. How long did it take for some of you to master?

Master’s a bit of a strong word here

Are you having trouble executing it, or do you just miss opportunities? Executing it isn’t too hard, but knowing when and when you can’t do it, and actually doing it when you can, can be difficult.

Granted I haven’t really practiced it that much, but executing it is the main problem. :crybaby:

I have a question about the Ultra 1.

Is there a gap between the first punch and the rest of the Ultra?

I was just in a match with a Chun Li who threw out a random Ultra 2 but she messed up the spacing and I was just out of it’s range so I punished with my own Ultra. The first punch connected but the rest she blocked. How is that possible?

My guess is that you started your ultra from too far away and the first hit moved him out of range for the rest of the hits. It has happened to me but with the last hit, i have seen a video of PR Balrog (VvV Scrub), and he activated the ultra on Diago and the last hit missed and he got punished.

Hey long time lurker first time posting. I’ve been playing SF since 2 but not on the level that HDR started me on. Anyways i love playing boxer but am having problems connecting the ultra off HP Headbutts. I’ll do say C.MP into HP Headbutt. for the headbutt i’m charging db then going to ub. From there do i need to hold ub or just b?

Thanks, Also if anyone wants to do some friendly practice/ teach a new boxer player some tricks I’m usually online at night GT is spentchicken.
