Balrog (Boxer) Beginner's Guide

ex headbutt is indeed easier to perform in such a situation, but if you’re in a non laggy match you can even ultra in between the 2 kicks, doing way more damage than by juggling the ultra from the ex headbutt

Can you link c.MK into c.MP? do I keep seeing this in some videos like Eduardo Perez v marn or is it something else? Thanks.

Yes, you can link into c. MP from c. MK.

do you have a video of the timing? can’t get it out for love nor for money… can do c.MK link into c. LK though :stuck_out_tongue:

I keep whiffing my ultras, I tried doing it when the player is right above boxers head. Anybody can give me some tips?

when the animation for the ultra is done hold a kick button so normally you do the ultra the you would hold kick the let go and whiff the second then hold for the rest so kpkkk hope that made sense

You can control Rog’s ultra to some degree by pressing and holding the K button while he’s throwing his punches. If you’re not pressing anything he’ll throw out a straight, if you’re holding a K button he’ll do an uppercut.

His ultra is a sequence of 5 punches that you can control in this manner, and the two most commonly used patterns that work on most characters are KPKKK or PPKKK.

Interesting didn’t know about that, thank you I’ll try it out tomorrow.

Hi all,

Im a long time reader but first time poster.

Only been playing SF since it came out on ps3 this year (never owned any previous versions), so to say Im a noob to the SF series would be an understatement (Im still learning the lingo e.g. fierce, FADC etc). I wouldnt even call myself a fighting game fan until I started playing SF4 but I have become hooked.

Thing is, I have decided to use Balrog as my main and have a little tourney coming up in about 3 weeks against some experienced, long time SF players.

The 3 other guys in the tourney all use shoto characters (Ryu, Ken or Sagat) and I have been playing online and getting thrashed by these characters especially when they fireball spam.

Im looking for some tips from others beginners on how they approach these match ups. I have heard that FA on the fireballs gains ultra meter but I am waaay too slow to time this.

Im sure there are other strategies to beating the fireball spam and Im looking forward to reading them.

Cheers,

PSN: chicko1983

If you are too slow to absorb fireballs, frankly, you are going to get wrecked if the others in the tourney are even half decent. Playing online is only a cheap substitute for playing people offline, and playing people offline in casuals is way different from playing in a tournament.

Until you can hone your reflexes to be able to absorb fireballs, don’t even worry about building meter for Ultra. You just have to be patient and when you can get in, get in. Read the matchups thread for specific matchups.

Personally, I welcome “mindless” fireball spam because I can absorb the hits and gain Ultra all day. However, there are other ways to deal with fireball spam. Jump straight up to avoid them - DO NOT JUMP TOWARDS unless you want to eat an anti-air shoryuken or Sagat HK. If you’re close enough and they throw a fireball, fierce headbutt through. Be patient patient patient. Hopefully, they will become impatient, at which point you can capitalize on their mistakes.

Again, though, if you are too slow to time absorbing fireballs, you have next to no chance beating these three guys if they are halfway decent - the reaction time required for absorbing fireballs is nothing compared to the reaction time required for seeing an opportunity to headbutt through a fireball. Slow reaction times will hold you back, no matter which character you play, no matter what play style you choose to adopt. You have to be honest with yourself about your skills and abilities, and we would like to help you.

Get your reaction times and instincts down and you will improve tremendously. Practice, practice, practice.

cheers for the advice. I should have been more clear, it is a casual tournament between 4 mates, so not as high level as tournament play but we all think we are alright players.

I actually played two of the other guys on the weekend. One of them (using Ken) I was beating just by jumping the fireballs but staying out of range of the uppercuts.

The other one was Sagat but he wore me down too easily, I was way too impatient and every time I jumped towards him he uppercut of kneed me.

I think my skills and reaction times are alright but when I tried the FA to absorb the fireballs it always seems like it takes a bit of time for the FA to “warm up” enough for it to absorb a fireball, hence I seemingly had to pre-empt the fireball.

Hi guys, but is there a shortcut for the dash > ultra.

I don’t mean like a shortcut shortcut I mean like is it possible on a standard ps3 controller.

Yes, just practice. I myself have tremendous difficulty even doing Ultra at all when on the right side. If you can, pick up a joystick and practice on that - playing Boxer on a stick is a dream compared to a joypad.

Ok uber noob question. how do you hit a special after a normal. i try to do

c.lp - c.lp - c.lk - EX rush punch - c lp headbutt.

The problem is I cant connect c.lk - EX rush punch. I cant even connect c.lp into his dash punch. So how do you guys do it? Should i press the normal button then immediately follow up with a motion forward (or up for headbutt) and a punch/kick button all at the same time?

So you have your downback 2 second charge. You do c.lp or c.lk or c.mp and immediately press forward then punch again for his dash punch.

One of the early Normal mode trials (#3 or something?) has you do c.lp xx Rush Punch, have you been able to complete that? It’s pretty much the same thing you’re asking about.

If you’re having problems canceling a string of normals into a special, just make sure you’re not hitting the normals too quickly; otherwise you can’t cancel into the special.

Thanks I did all the trials up to the third hard trial. Have problem with that one. But yeah I’ll keep practicing.

edit: still having problems, what where you talking about doing the normals too fast?? I think that might be the problem. Can you elaborate???

Maybe you’re not linking the clk after the clp. If you cancel clp into clk you cant cancel for the special afterwards. Try to delay the clk a little bit and then complete the motion for the special as fast as you can.

ok but does double tapping ensure the normals will link because if it does i will commit to learning the art of double tapping. Any vids on it? I tried but nothing on double tapping

@Bojador_pt: Actually, you can’t cancel c. lp into c. lk. You can verify this by going into training mode, hitting c. lp and immediately mashing c. lk. It won’t come out until after c. lp recovers.

The reason why most newbs mess the combo up is because they’re special cancelling too late. Most will mash out the c. lk, but when it finally comes out they won’t be able to special cancel in time because they’ll still be mashing the lk button.

Aside from that, your advice is sound in that it should fix whatever problem Arby is having with his input.

@Arbie: c. lp, c. lp, c. lk, is pretty easy to link. There’s no need to double tap. As Bojador said, try slowing down the inputs. Don’t mash or double tap. Try doing it slowly and practicing c. lp, c. lp, c. lk while making sure that you’re pressing each input exactly once. If the c. lk doesn’t come out after your c. lp, you’re doing it too fast, and you should slow it down.

Once you’ve figured out how to do c. lp, c. lp, c. lk, start special cancelling it. Basically you want to finish the special input the instant after you hit c. lk. If you’re listening to the buttons being pressed during the combo, it sounds like: Tap… Tap… Ta-tap.
