Balrog (Boxer) Beginner's Guide

if someone misses a dp, just throw them. Damage is good, you get a knockdown, and it’s very easy to do. Yes doing things like c.LP bnb is fine as well but throwing them works.

yeah if you don’t have ultra or super you might as well go for a simple throw. The damage will be more or less the same as the one of a bnb ending with fierce hb and you won’t risk of screwing up.

I can’t count the times where i missed the c.lk link in online matches due to a lag spike

You should only throw someone after a wiffed DP or a big opening when the positioning really benefits you (i.e. corner)

The damage from something like say Focus Attack -> Dash -> s. RH, c. LK xx EX Upper, c. LP, c. LK xx HP Headbutt or c. MP xx EX Upper… is too good to be ignored, pushes your enemy back a good distance and leads to crazy great mix ups from your EX Upper game including grabs, overheads or what have you. If you don’t have your EX Loops down then c. MP xx HP Headbutt still does great damage and is very easy to make happen, pushes the enemy back a little less than a throw but you’re still on top of them even if they tech so I can play ambiguous cross up games or just keep the pressure going

When you have a chance to do big damage, you do it, don’t settle for less. You’re probably not going to have that chance again.

Or you can punish with c.strong -> fp hb.

err original question is what to do on a missed DP if you dont’ have charge. You can land a lvl 2 FA that quickly if someone misses a DP? That sounds pretty difficult.

Ah, ha didn’t even notice it said without charge

If you’ve got quick reactions, I’m pretty sure you can hit someone with a LV2 focus attack if they wiff a DP that close to you. I know I’ve done it a few times.

Also, you can get c. LP, c. LP, c. LK xx HP Headbutt or EX Rush Upper into whatever from neutral position if you time it which IMO leads puts you in a better position and does more damage

I am really struggling to beat Zangiefs with Balrog? My win percentage against him is only 30% and most of those wins have been flukes.

The Russian Wrestler and cheap Blanka are the only characters I cannot beat consistently.

Any ideas at how I beat these two?

My way/method

Zangief:
From my experience against him. I use a lot of jumping back fierce, jab straights, and c.roundhouse. For me, there is not much to taking down Gief. You don’t need to do anything special to take him out. Just punish for any stupid mistakes he does. Most likely, you’d never encounter a good Gief online anyway. Well, at least from my experience I never do. Blocking ex green hand would usually give you a free combo.

Lariants:
If he does it for no reason at a far distance, wait till it’s almost finish and do jab/strong straight, it should hit him.
If your close, you can just c.roundhouse.
Do a TAP for max damage on whiff punish and exRU can interrupt it clean for combo into ultra.
I believe, jumping back fierce stuffs this attack as well.
Ballsy risk: Use the ex to take in his last lariant smack to build ultra meter
ex dash upper -> c.jab -> c.short -> headbutt(276)

Ex Green Hand:
After blocking, you should be able to combo anything.
c.jabx2 -> c.short -> headbutt(176) w/ ultra(345)
c.strong -> headbutt(230) w/ ultra(464)
c.jabx2 -> c.short -> ex upper -> c.jab -> c.short -> headbutt(239)
After blocking you can punish with combo of choice or throw for positioning.
Jumping back fierce stuffs this
**
Gief punish lariats stuff jump in attemps and DONT! get hit. Be really really patient!**

Blanka:
I turtle a lot. He does straight ball, you block, and punish with dash straight. Keep in mind headbutts miss a lot against this guy. Pisses me off slowly. Cross up ball I believe you can easily punish with c.fierce if not, then you can focus absorb it and dash out of the way.

Straight Ball:
After blocking, you can just jab straight

Cross up Ball/Backstep Roll
You can c.fierce
Focus absorb -> c.fierce. This goes into details I guess. You can tell whether it might be valid to throw out a c.fierce after the focus absorb by looking at how the ball hit you.
Focus absorb/Dash upper or super/ultra

His stupid claw slide:
After blocking, just c.roundhouse
C.rh for knock down, throw, or combo punish it.
**
Blanka yeah just turtle and keep him out of cross up range and the match is a free win oh and punish electricity with c.rh from a far and jab up close, meaty jump in fp and rh will stuff it and you can also throw between active frames.**

In other words, these two characters are just punish. They do something unsafe or ridiculously stupid, just punish them.

Note: I’m not a top player, this is just my way of going up against these two characters. To make sure, I will go into training mode soon and test them out unless someone has knowledge over this and tells me, I will edit my post.

I hope this helps you! :slight_smile:

Thanks to G Slip8 for helping me add a little bit more info! :smiley:

All of Blanka’s horizontal balls are pretty much equally punishable. Crossup horizontal balls are unsafe on hit, so c.HP should work fine. If you ever see Blanka do a rainbow ball, charge an FA right before he hits you (Doesn’t matter where, as long as he hits you), and smack him hard for using that shitty gimmick move.

Please excuse me for not crawling through all these pages here - if this was already discussed, a hint to the right page would be appreciated.

Is it 100% reliable to interrupt a Ryu’s blocked cr.mk, Hado with a headbutt in between? Does it work for other fireball characters?

Ido agree to a point. But this also means you need to be close, there can’t be any lag, in a vacum you are correct but that isn’t always what we play in. Throwing is 100% effective and the damage it deals in comparison to a chained attack is not that far off. You can also throw the user into the corner… it’s just a very safe and simple attack. When i see someone ask “how do i punish a wiffed dp” I’m not thinking “well you can go c.MP, ex rush upper, c.LP x2, then into headbutt or overhead, c.LK, headbutt.” I mean most likely if someone is asking what to do on a wiffed dp they aren’t high level so just throwing them works 100% and it’s just as good of a punish then some rush upper chain or a headbutt (imo).

this is a frame question. I think that you could probably figure it out using that data. I also suggest learning it because it can help with other situations on how/what to punish.

that being said i’m not 100% sure about headbutt but i have never had an issue using EX dash punch after a blocked c.MK through his fireball.

phew, read through the entire 18 pages. Great read.

one question: Its mentioned that TAB has invincibility on startup. So if a Abel or Gief player is coming in close for a throw after theyve knocked you down, will a TAB on wakeup escape their throw and hit them?

Also, didnt quite get this, is the TAB invincibility only on 1 hit or can it pass through the Akuma fireball and Ruys Super/Ultra?

TAB? Do you mean Turn Around Punch?

TAP is invincible from HITS, not from THROWS. In fact, Boxer can be thrown out of all of is Specials if they’re not spaced so that you hit them from max range - with EX being the easiest to be thrown out of.

Hyper Armor let’s you absorb [usually] 1 attack. This is not the case with Boxer’s TAP. It doesn’t have Hyper Armor, it has invincibility startup frames. So during startup he can’t be hit out of TAP, much like EX Headbutt has invincible startup. The invin. doesn’t last forever so have to time it right when using it to go through attacks.

So YES, when timed right TAP goes through ALL fireballs no matter how many times the fireball hits.

hah, yeah I meant TAP. So the theres basically only 2 options when they come in close after they knock you down. jump straight up HP or backdash.

had a few online games a moment ago and found that people block my headbutt after 3xc.lp xx headbutt. is that because I do it too slow? not cancelling the last c.lp?

I’m having alot of trouble getting in on Sagats online. Is there any great way to play against a defensive Sagat that just throws fireballs, and standing HK when I jump in or turn punch?

i usually just wait and absorb ,jump over the tiger shots, i think if you can wear down his patience of constantly throwing them then he’ll come to you and then you can counter accordingly

:rofl:also check out seedyroms youtube page he just had a match with a sagat like that and he beat him down with ease:rofl:

I did meet a dude like that yesterday. What I did was absorb a few shots and then EX Rush punched him through the next tiger shot. Dont know if thats the best way to get in but it worked :wonder:

Either you’re doing the c.LPs too quickly (Canceling them into each other instead of linking. If you don’t know the difference, I suggest that you look those terms up), or not canceling the headbutt quickly enough. Online may have a part in this some of the time. Oh, and try to do c.LK at the end instead of c.LP. It does a very slight increase in damage, lol.
