I thought this thread was going to be about Silly Bands.
So, after reading a serious article about Nodding Disease, that stuff is scary as shit. It’s carried by a parasite and transmitted by a certain fly, and pretty much eventually robs them of all intelligence during one of the seizure attacks. They’re having to resort to tying down children to keep them from wandering off, and the news report shows a disturbing image of a mindless child gnawing away at his restraints.
Having said that, it’s sad that they’re not able to get proper care. Had this happened in any other continent, medical action would have been swift.

Very strange. They should check the surrounding environment; animal-borne contagions tend to hit with certain types of weather (Pestis often hits during droughts, and malaria is common after rainy periods), and this seems like it’s an unusual phenomena. Also, it so far only affects children or young adults, not older people, which means the age trend is not just due to immune deficiency.
It is both frightening and heart-wrenching reading over what happens to affected children and their families.

But you have some sort of point. Depending on the age, and body size of the host, the parasite will have problems getting its daily calorie source until it goes catabolic. Then again, nobody knows if the parasite has control over anything but eating and basic motor skills, it could last a lot longer than a normal human could on a low calorie and nutrition diet.
