We Need a Smash Bros. Melee Thread!

Bowser is good. Just sit back and turn on the heat with his flame breath.

I hardly use the flame breath w/ bowser. I just abuse his Bowser Bomb, Whirling Fortress, and Bowser Claw.

Yah, i felt Roys and Marth Wrath like 2 days ago when i played at my friends house. He is one edge guarding mofo.

Does anyone know a good follow up after Yoshi’s Drill kicks (down A in the air)? I usually do his sweep smash attack , but it doesn;t connect most of the time.

Did you guys know that w/ Falco, you can do the reflector right after his down grab, then when they fly straight in the air you can do his Falco slicer for a easy stock.

On the subject of Bowser, I finally got the Action Replay codes to work for bosses! Giga Bowser ownz! (Whenever plaer_dos and company gets to come over again I think I’ll let you all try him out. If you don’t know already, I’m Westley.)

So anyway, the Yoshi follow-up, I’d say use the Up-Smash (the headbutt) because it will knock them into the air hard. I don’t really think you can combo anything after the kicks though.

(Here is a video of me using Giga Bowser for fun, at the end of the match, the game freezes because there is no “this game’s winner is” for Giga Bowser.)

Has anyone noticed how much pride and competitiveness (is that a word?) this game causes? I talk to those who play SF, those of TTT/T4, MK, MvC2, but it seems that when it comes to SSBM people just start talking shit like nobodys business. Even I’ll say “I’ll take on anyone from anywhere with any character!”, but when it comes to 3s I’ll be like “Yeah I play, care to have some matches or something?” Just an observation.

Anyway, all characters are dope, but I think 2 stand out. Pika with his j.u+A that knocks opponents diagonally downards, and Zelda’s j.f+A that sends people flying. Young Link and Zelda are the funnest I think.

Does anyone else wish that Up on the joystick wouldn’t make you jump? I hate that shit.

I think the up doesn’t matter bc in my opinion Using Y is easier to jump. When you use the stick you have more of a chance to jump in the direction you don’t want to jump in. Plus it easier to recover jump using the Y (saves time).

The People i play w/ are not like that. We just play for the love of the game. We might get a little into it every now and then, but it is all friendly.

Westley (hybrid_stoic): I want to make Giga bowser so bad. I own w/ regular bowser, imagine if i had GIGA BOWSER. That would be the day.

P.S, I like you avatar!!!

Thanks for thy compliment, made the avatar myself too.

Well anyway, plaer_dos is right, we play for the love of the game. I think that’s the way it should be, a game shouldn’t be your life like some people I know. They take it personally no matter what.

Giga Bowser is awesome, he’s a big target but his power makes up for it. His Bowser Bomb literally kills everything on the screen. Maybe you’ll be able to play him on my brother’s b-day.

I just saw that vid…He is insane!!! I like how all his smash attacks are also elemental attacks!!! That is insane.

When is you bros. b-day again. NExt time we need to bring devoy toy cuz everytime we go he is at work. He is pretty good at melee.

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO USES BOWSER!!! HE IS THE BEST CHARACTER IN THAT GAME.

It’s July 31st but I’m not sure if he’s holding the get together at that date. I can’t ask him right now because he’s at work (duh…) Hope Devoy comes too, the more people that come, the better. I think he is also bringing some of his other friends too, like Will (he has a pretty good Link and uses Falco too…)

Can’t wait for it either, been playing Melee more often now that there is actualy competition.

Yeah, I come to think of it, the people who come to my dojo talking shit are all scrubs. Go fig.

As for the up thing, it just bugs me when I need to do an upper attack like DK’s fly swat, but I jump instead. The precision of Jumping direction does make it good though.

Alright, I wanna post these little tactic thingies:

Shield at point of contact of thrown object/projectile =Reflect/Deflect
A at point of contact of thrown item=Catch item
Z in air when in contact with item falling neutrally or from your throw=Catch
Air dodge/dodge+A at point of contact of thrown item=catch (I’m pretty sure that this only applies to characters without beam-throws)

Anything I’m missing?

Yeah, it’s more than likely going to be on the 31st. And yeah, my brother and I are the Sword Bros. (what my friends at school call Roy and Marth). I use Roy even though he is underrated because of his lack of speed and jump height.

In real competition, I’ve learned to think of it as just another fighter in terms of tactics.

 1. Mix Keep-away and in-close fighting to keep the opponent guessing.

 2. Tick throws. Jab -> run in and throw

 3. Wavedash. Air dodge to the left or right as soon as you jump.

 4. Crouch cancel. If you are going to get smashed, crouched. Instead of going in the air, you slide across the ground.

I’ll come up with more later.

Even though this will probably start some crazy debate here, you ask for it:

From: http://qwester.supersheep.org/TierFAQ.htm - which basically got it’s info from Smash World Forums. And yes, those are supposely in order.

plaer_dos is right, Bowser is one of the underrated characters. From the looks of the list, speed is the main trait the characters have on the Top section of the Tier List. Thanks for the list.

Yeah thanx for the list.

But to my opinion Falco should replace Fox in the list. Falco is faster, does more damage, his illusion goes farther, and he has almost no recovery time!

Bowser should not be in the very bottom. I think from experience that Bowser is the best heavy weight in the game. So i think he should be atleast on the High list.

Pikachu should be a little higher too.

Link should be higher

Peach shouldn’t be so high.

Roy should be higher.

People who should not be in the top two ranks:
Fox
PEach
JigglyPuff
Samus (only bc she is to balanced)

You dare to question Peach??!

I’ll be sure to Peach-Bomb you extra hard just for that one!

I have no skill in this game, but Peach is my favorite because I love how you can stay in the air for a long time. It reminds me of playing Super Mario Bros. 2 on the original Nintendo.

-NinjMai

P.S. - Welcome to the forums, Wesley!

I’m sorry but that is my opinion!! I know you will master the game though N.mai!! Just Keep on going to the days we play with us and get the experience. That is what you do best…Master Fighting games!!!

Maybe you can make me change my mind about peach.

Does anyone fill me in Links main strategy?
What is L-Cancelling and how do you do it?

Oz: If you do have your melee fest i will be looking forward to it. Maybe now we can have our 1 on 1  .

Im a Falco player myself.

However I have to disagree player_dos. Fox is MUCH faster than Falco is.

Falco does do more damage. However with Fox’s combo ability (with his d+a alone) I think that Fox can do more damage faster (especially if you get his infinite down).

Falco has a better spike tho IMO. And his short hop gun is better than fox’s projectile.

I think that between Falco and Fox is just a matter of preference. It all depends on how either of them is used. I mostly play Falco over Fox simply because everyonr else that I played used him. I need to know how he worked to know a good strategy against him with Roy.

That list looks about right. I would rank Captain Falcon and Samus above Peach, but just by a little bit. Melee is mainly about speed before power, so I think the list is accurate.

Choosing between Fox and Falco is a big matter of preference, as with any character. I always prefered Fox since SSB64 but in this game was put off by some of his changes and found out that Falco retain alot of his older qualities but in the end I love playing as Fox even more. You still can take Falco very far in this game though, if you want to see a great Falco in action search for vids of a player named “Dave”.

Fox is much, much faster than Falco in terms of movement and attack speed. Fox has the strongest Usmash in the game (actually Pikachu does but no one cares for him) and his Uair is just as strong. Falco has a stronger Fsmash (which may be why someone would think he is stronger) and Dtilt but generally Fox can KO way faster than Falco cause of his speed and combination of powerful Upward attacks and the many attacks that leads into them such as Up Throw, netural A, Dtilt, dash attack, Utilt. Falco has the easier to use spike with Dair but shine (Reflector) spiking with Fox can give out similar results and is more versatile.

Both Fox and Falco has horrible recovery overall, the Fire Fox/Bird and Illusion are easy to counter for a majority of characters in the game. Fox’s travel further on both of those moves compared to Falco, the difference between the Illusion dashes isn’t that great but the Fire Fox goes MUCH further than Fire Bird. The only advantage of Fire Bird is that it hits harder so the opponent will be in for some hell if they decide to counter but ends up trading blows at the least. So Fox at least has some option to mix up his recovery between the Fire Fox in upward/straight direction or Illusion dash while Falco pretty much dies the moment he’s offstage cause he is forced to use the Illusion dash for horizontal recovery as the Fire Bird just don’t cut it in most cases.

The guns, the short hop laser from Falco is great but if you look at it differently Fox’s blaster goes well with him. He is constantly knocking you around and it’s very easy to sneak in a couple of short hop blaster shots for free 5-15% damage while he is following the opponent with his juggles. I agree it’s easier to abuse Falco’s though.

The popular choice for heavyweight is Ganondorf. He packs the power of Bowser and is more mobile than him. All of his attacks have great knockback (which is important in this game) and damage power (his Usmash is one of the strongest in the game in terms of damage dealt). It also don’t hurt that he has two spikes (one is actually just a very powerful meteor smash) to his name which makes him a dangerous edge guarder.

Peach, don’t underestimate cause of her dense/goofy look, she has way too much prioriy on her attacks (ground or aerial) and the turnips alone makes half of the cast look stupid. Her Dsmash gets the most attention though since it makes her one of the better crouch canceling characters in the game and makes her edge guading game scary to go up against. She is one of the harder characters to edge guard in the game so you have to KO her to win in most matches. Her forward throw is also surprisely strong.

For the tier list, I only really consider the top and bottom (with Mewtwo replacing Bowser) to be exact, the upper-low tier placings is just too blurry IMO. I’ve seen the characters in those placings beast on the higher ups besides Shiek (no one beast on Shiek except Fox at best cause she is basically broken). Most noteable is Captain Falcon who I think should be up there with Marth at the least.

To L-cancel, press L (or R) before you land while doing an aerial attack. The easiest moves to notice the effect of this is Link’s Dair and Bowser’s Bair. It doesn’t make sense why this works but it’s big part of the game.

especially with Fox and Falco.

No he’s not. Bowser gets raped by almost everyone. He’s way to slow, all you have to do is stay on top of him and he can’t do anything. As long as you don’t make any mistakes and make sure you don’t get hit with one of his smashes you are fine.

It’s fun playing bowser though, cause it’s an uphill battle the whole way.
