As for the money, I honestly don’t wanna pay 5 every week… I’m down for 2/3/4 on a 1/1, 2/1, 2/2 distribution.

Honestly, I say keep it at $2. When we did biweekly ranbats for SF4, they gradually died out as people lost their 5 dollars every time. $2 keep enough people coming to support the scene and the stream. As much as we want to raise the stakes, if this is a weekly kinda thing the stakes don’t need to be high anyway. I think the day there’s an independent, hardcore tourney outside of our normal schedule, we could definitely go $5-$10. But as it stands, if we do tournaments once a week it will shrink the number of entrants over time. $2 is perfect, the $1 goes to support the stream and the other dollar provides incentive to play well. And if the heavy hitters don’t think it’s worth their time, they miss out on stream exposure.
Honestly, the model is very similar to Cory’s Ranbats (Low cost of entry, a pretty long drive for the majority of us), but the stream is what really makes it worth going for.
Again, I’d also really enjoy it if we ran it the Swiss way that Rick had for training for Evo last year, I think with how fast it went last week it’d be very doable for everyone to get their matches in.
That said, I’m going to be in Colorado on that day. I’ll be sure to catch the next one. I’d very much like to improve my commentating after discovering how horrible I am from those recordings. Shit’s fun, I think I like it more than actually playing the game!

this doesnt make sense. the ranbats were $5 bucks sure. but they were bi-weekly. while we do stuff at hazem’s every saturday, $2. so every 2 weeks, you are just spending one less dollar(i can find more than a dollar in random places in the house…). The reason why turnouts got smaller, is the same reason everytime, you filter out all the wannabe competitive players, or the players that love the game, and want to be good, and do show improvement, but then the next call of duty comes out, and they move on. Of course you also have people that drive 30+ minutes to show up and dont want to do that every time. And then you just have lazy people.
i think $5 entry had the least impact on why attendance was slowing down. Sure a lot of people here are frugal as fuck with money. But $5 every 2 weeks? that frugal?
no matter what the price is, you will still have the same core group show up, with a couple new faces to stick around, while most will show for a little while, get beat, and realize they have to put serious work in, and quit. people are so easily discouraged. This always happens, even with casuals that are free. People dont like losing, and most people dont like losing and dont want to put a whole lot of effort to stop losing, so the only winning strategy is to not play. Sure entry fees will play a factor with these people, but its a matter of time til they leave regardless. its just how it goes . People just dont like losing(understandably so) over and over and over
i just wanted to add that i am fine with it being $2 or whatever you guys want it to be. just merely pointing out that $5 was not the reason of shrinking attendance at the ranbats. in actuality, i think the numbers kinda fluctuated

anyone planning on getting together and playing marvel on friday. Since i work sunday and have to be up at 5am, its hard for me to find a ride home.
also about people leaving the scene and what not. its bound to happen. This is evident not only at our gatherings, but at places like gameworks. we have 4 AE setups there, but the community is divided. on one side we have all the SRK players, and on the other side are the random players, who like the game but dont want to get whooped on. I understand that some people just want to play the game. But there are always going to be those people who think they wanna get better, or who think they are good, but then get beat by better players and realize they have alot to learn. Sometimes these players will stick around. look at tsumuji. I remember when i used to beat him all the time in SF4. Now i cant even touch him. he put in the time and effort to improve his game. Same with Dana. i really respect that, and its def not easy. I feel that alot of people realize just how hard this is, and decide to stop playing. fighting games have the problem of not having instant gratification like other games do (FPS) so alot of people just lose. interest. I dont think its something we have the power to change. All we can do as competitive players is try to reach out to people who need help, and help as much as we can. I think gatherings, and streaming and what not helps. but in the end, the player has to want to learn how to get better. have a $2 or a $5 entry isnt going to make a player decide to keep playing or not.
