AZ Thread: Lots of events! Read 1st posts for upcoming AZ tourneys/events

I’ll be honest, I haven’t put much thought into the subject. I saw Coreys post, then thought about Stargate: Universe getting cancelled. Started thinking about the fact that I just watched UFC 104-129 straight, and didn’t see a single real commercial other than hearing “Your tale of the tape is brought to you by” etc…

I’m all FOR Advertising. Content isn’t free. It’s not like there’s a bunch of philanthropists creating content out of the goodness of their hearts, to help the world be entertained. I just think the model needs to change. I was just kicking ideas around with Sam over chat and I came up with: Short 10 second commercials instead of the 30 second model most people want to skip. Hell it takes 10 seconds to get your remote and hit fast forward, so people won’t bother. Especially if they’re shown more often, but less of them overall. (Think 2 at 10 seconds instead of 6 at 30 seconds) Then more product placement. Non-cheesy, like “Cool Bob sits down to watch the game with his buddies, and grabs a cold coke.” NOT the terrible idea of "Cool Bob sits down to watch the game with his buddies and grabs a cold coke, then says to his friends “Now this is the life. Nothing is better than a cool refreshing cold coke while watching the game with friends.” And on streaming content, always have a button that you can press for more info, and special discounts for purchasing DURING the show you’re watching.

I compare this to the death of MTV back in the early 90’s. Advertisers knew people were watching MTV, but couldn’t figure out when to advertise. The MTV execs couldn’t figure out how to charge more for certain times, since the content was semi-random. So they created TV shows, and killed the Music.

yeah i forgot to mention that on internet, they are more interactive. i notice some stream ads ask what kind of ad you prefer more or whatever. yeha im all about short ads getting to the point. radio is the worst and is one of the many reasons why i never listen to the radio anymore. its so fucking annoying when you make a 10 minute drive, to hear nothing but commercials. go run your errands, drive back home, and then its commercials only again… the price you pay for wanting 60+ minutes of nonstop “free” content

Stargate Universe was getting really good and now it’s dead. To be fair, they should have focused on storylines like Season 2 from the beginning instead of doing the stones thing which caused a lot of people to drop the show and never return.

I misspoke earlier. I meant that when I started really watching the stream I think it started around swifthief vs. vitamin thc. roundabouts. SOmetimes you guys spent an entire match talking about your teams and your strategies with your own matches rather than the match going on. At times you guys would entirely ignore a match because you were either talking to someone around you or paying attention to chat. Then halfway through a match one of you would be like “oh there’s a match going on”. Other times you guys would snap back to the match mid fight an just declare it over when it would be only halfway done and then go back to whatever you were talking about. I dont remember specific matches but was just something i was noticing as i watched. There wer more good matches done than bad ones tho. It was only the 2nd time doing this so i know it’ll get better with practice and i’m sure it’s not as easy as it looks. I’m just tryin to help. I think our stream is fine if we were only concerned about AZ seeing it. But if we want other communities to respect it i think these are some thigns we should work on that’s all.

I get your point, but that is a really terrible analogy. Being ignored in a stream chat is a far cry from a second class citizen =P

The guy declaring games over mid way was probably me, and it was probably when Doom was on screen. That wasn’t saying the game was literally over as much as it was joking about what Doom says when he does his hypers.

I still have a lot of reading to do to catch up, but quickly regarding stream chat:

I think there should be one person running the stream (i.e. Overlays, arranging matches, scores, names, etc. Let’s call him the Stream Organizer) and two dedicated Commentators who should only concentrate on the match. The Stream Organizer, in addition to performing his regular duties, also keeps track of the viewer count and brings up noticeable tidbits in the stream chat. Commentators should work together and provide color and play by play commentary, and when the Stream Organizer gives them some dialogue from the stream chat to work with they can comment on that. That way the stream chat doesn’t get entirely ignored but the commentators aren’t distracted. We could also do an “Ask the Audience” type thing between matches to fill time, if needed.

I’ll read more in a bit, but that’s what I was thinking we could implement next time.

Samuel O’Hickey Presents: Four Important Questions For The Aspiring Competitive Gamer

I’m blogging now. Just an FYI. I have a lot of free time these days, and I’ve felt like writing.

That wasn’t the reason the ratings went down from an already low number. WWE Smackdown took the spot it held. Syfy is going through a re-branding, and wants to completely move away from all science fiction. (Hence the name change from sci-fi to syfy.) They added cooking shows, WWE Smackdown, reality programming, etc, and they’re removing Stargate, and anything associated. MGM wasn’t ready to cancel the series, this was strictly Syfy. The lower ratings have been attributed more to people watching on Hulu and Netflix, both were showing episodes only a few days after the original air-date. When you move a show from a coveted time slot to a random Tuesday night spot, the show will lose viewers. Period.

But it was the reason why it lost viewers in the first place.

The Syfy exec said that, at that point, the show has already dropped to an unsustainable number and they wanted to move it to a night where Warehouse 13 saw success as well as pair it up with Caprica

GateWorld ? An Open Letter to Stargate Fans From Syfy

So AE is at MGL? Is it at gameworks too?

You also declared that I won in the middle of my match with Arnul because of my use of grey hulk.

I don’t even remember if you did win that match or not. But gray Hulk is best Hulk.

@CrotchMonkey: Gameworks is basically where everyone goes now since the cab at MGL are in constant disrepair. Thursdays is pretty much when people go to gameworks since they do time cards from seven to midnight.

He did win that match, it was hype.

That letter was a hunk of crap. They were just trying to save face.

GateWorld How Wrestling is Killing Science Fiction

This made a lot more sense to me than their attempt to recover the people who left the channel.

This is almost a year old, but I think it’s relevant: IAMA senior executive at the Syfy channel : AMA

Good stuff on the stream guys. Quality was legit.
#1 Don’t let the commentators read the stream chat during a match/as little as possible. During a match it really downgrades the quality/flow of the commentary if the commentator is always trying to read the chat window. Now let’s say you cut to a commentator cam. The shot looks really cheesy and lame if the commentator is trying to move over to see what is on the chat.

The producer/director is responsible for watching the chat and seeing if there are issues with the stream. If they see a valid question, they should note it and present it to the commentator after the match. Yes the stream viewers are the audience to please, but don’t cater to their demands, have confidence that you are putting on a good show for them.

Also, work with you bracket runners to insure you have matches. Whoever is running brackets should be giving you 2-3 matches lined up for stream which includes gamertags whatever. Helps out to remove “dead air”

For audio, don’t worry if the game is a little low. Its always better to hear the commentators clearly than game audio and commentators get a little lazy holding the mic properly later in the night lol.

Anyway guys, good job first time out. Hope y’all have fun with it and if you ever need a shout out on WNF, send me a slide and I’ll throw it up on stream. Hope to see some of y’all at revelations.

Thanks to offcast for the feedback. We definitely got a ways to go to get to your quality, but its great to see the big guys showing us some love by giving advice. Much appreciated!

As a Huge Stargate fan, I thought SGU was very mediocre, it more BSG than SG. Less focus on the SG story scifi and more on personal relationships,.I can turn on Grey’s Anatomy if I want to see a show about relationships. I’m more disappoint that they canceled SGA for SGU.
