good job top 8. Props to Navi for gettin in there.
Dan, I just want to see a fair ran tournament. I’m not worried about it, sorry for the confusion in my post. Other then Bryan rigging brackets and not floating me or Cory it was a good tournament. Need to get back on my game start playing more.
Sorry Robb for bailing and not saying bye, I had to go to work for a bit. I’ll see you guys at the MK thing tonight.
I’m somewhat surprised there is an embargo on early reviews for the game. That is not very assuring.
Robb, yeah no doubt it sucked being in Sean’s shoes. I would be pissed if I had wrong assist. But I would also blame that on myself. It happens. But its not fair to the other player either especially when he has momentum going.
It just really sucked that it happened when it was 1-1, a very critical game. its unfortunate. Lessons are learned i hope. I’m sure Sean will probably pay closer attention to his assist selection. I know I do
I’ll try to make the next ranbat. All these names I never heard of, I want to play them
Yep the MK9 thing is a long window for negative edge thats causing the issue Seeing that there was already a patch makes me think they will address this soon since this game came out with the intention of being a truely legitimate tournament fighter. Unlike a lot of people on this board I am one that actually likes patches (as long as they make sense and try to correct balance issues), maybe thats because I was a hardcore PC gamer first and was use to patches coming out.
It will be interesting to see a competitive fighting game that relies on patching stuff frequently to achieve its desired gameplay throughout its life cycle. I think that newer fighting games are trying to do that, but the mentality coming from the traditional japanese method of fighting game dev seems to avoid too much patching (aside from MVC3 of course). I would love to see how this game turns out in the long run if NRS is johnny on the spot with consistent tuning of the game after it’s in the wild.
Hahaha! NO FLOATS! You, of all people know that… I cannot believe you want me to go boo boo kai-style!
Now worries at all - I turned around at one point and was looking for you to play some casual but you were gone. See you tonight.
Agreed.
I know, right - a bunch of new players!
Toobad most will disappear or not go anywhere else to play =( hopefully there will be some keepers
Alright, so you proved my point by saying that it wouldn’t have been a big deal had it happened at another point in the game. Because “health and position” wouldn’t be lost. Well who is the judge on how much health is too much before it can be allowed to be replayed? One hit? one combo? It’s all arbitrary. Position too, that’s even more arbitrary, who can say that one position is better than another and it’s too important to allow restarting a match?
Also, Dan got his breaks. Robb was saying before the tournament he wouldn’t let Dan sign up without being there in person but he still let him. Dan got the whole set replayed. People were also telling me that after I beat Dan that he was eliminated from the tournament because for showing up late he was given a loss but then he still played in the losers bracket. If that’s true, Dan was given like 3 extra chances. One for being allowed to register w/o being there, one for replaying the set against me, and another one for reversing the one loss decision and letting him play in the losers bracket.
Your shoulder checking analogy is so flawed in its logic. First of all, official rules barely say anything outside time limit and damage settings. Shoulder checking, yelling in someone’s ear, etc., you’d have to go out of your way to do that intentionally. The major difference is that what I did was an accident. Intentions, purposely vs accidental, that one difference makes these scenarios entirely different.
I learned my lesson, as most of you have pointed out. The entire rest of the tournament I was looking at my assist type and double checking it was what I wanted. I know people like to be competitive and Sirlin’s “playing to win” book really emphasizes being cut-throat to win a tournament but man there should be a point where you can just be cool with someone and be like “ah, yea that is the wrong the assist you got, I’ll let you restart so you can play the team you intended play.”
I LOL at people pausing games! It’s instant DQ no matter what the situation is.
I messed up on a SF4 tourney and set up the buttons wrong. I figured it out and still played the match since I knew it was MY FAULT for not checking properly.
Using excuses, redirecting topic and pointing fingers is not really going to help your position. PAUSE == EPIC FAIL!!!

HAHA okay
Also, looking to buy a TE-S for Xbox 360, has to be new or in very good condition.
Will not be paying 150 dollars, looking for a great deal and not in a hurry.
Damn, busy that day.
Might be able to catch the stream though.
Also: Why all the tourneys be 360, I ain’t got a stick for that D:
I’m sure people will be kind enough to lend you a stick. We don’t bite.
So Robb, do the Xboxes tonight have the newest patch? If not, LOL (I did just realize getting hit gives you meter to perform Breaker, but still):

I have a PS3 TE-S and I could easily swap PCBs with a 360 stick I have lying around from a R1. You’d have a home button and the graphic would have PS3 buttons listed, but at least you wouldn’t have to deal with the ugly 4 colored 360 buttons on the front.
I could let it go for $110 but I’d prefer a swap with a PS3 R1. PM if interested.
Goes for others as well-
If someone wants to swap their R1 PS3 TE for a TE-S PS3 let me know. There’s nothing wrong with it, in fact it’s only been used a few hours or so, I just want to match it with an existing R1 stick for visual/graphic purposes.
I’ll be sending you a PM in the next day as I want 2 of them.
I know a few of you guys (mainly the DL guys) frequent Pop Culture Paradise. I’ll be putting a SFA3 machine in there soon at a quarter a play with Sanwa sticks and Semitsu buttons. Perhaps I’ll get Scott to organize a tourney over there to see if anyone can beat him.

Here is my issue with this whole pausing thing. What the hell was sean supposed to do? Seriously, picking the incorrect assist type might not become apparent till 5-15 seconds into play, or worse yet, if it is an assist for an anchor character, you may not know until even later than that. Lets say that character is Spencer, and 2 of his assist types look pretty similar, and could even be mistaken for one another in a few combo instances, what then?
this whole thing seems like an honest mistake, and frankly, it is a hard one to call unless you make a blanket solution and say “select at your own risk”. That being said, this is a $1 ranbat amongst friends. just saying. this is silly to make an issue of it.
Hell, what if he would have just pressed assist, saw that he had the wrong assist type, threw his arms in the air and said, “stop stop, I have the wrong assist!” would that have been okay then? Because then he would be addressing the more serious issue; sometimes picking assists quickly in order to move a tournament along efficiently can in fact lead to small mistakes that can drastically change the outcome of a game.
In the mean time, I do suggest that we adhere to the “pause and lose a match rule” but it should in fact be reviewed by the judge, then called by them. We’re bitching at sean, but he just played and won. sure he paused, but he had a legitimate gripe. He didn’t pause to screw dan up, or on accident. There was a legitimate issue that he didn’t catch because selecting assist types in mvc3 can be confusing if you are doing it quickly and under a bunch of pressure.
Really, I can understand that some people are thinking, “well choose your shit right” well sure that is absolutely ideal, but in the event an accident does occur, and a player is presenting a strong case, as sean was, it should ultimately be up to the judge.
Also, really, what would the point of sean just playing a setup he accidentally chose even be? Oh dan, a really good player in his own right, can beat sean when he messes up his assist selection and thereby upsets the balance of his team?! That is a completely empty win. People didn’t show up to see people win matches or lose matches on BS technicalities.
Sean: Another part of that Play to Win bs is to deal with the pressure in a tournament, however unpredictable it may be. Dan can lose 1 or 2 matches on this, but 2 sets? Dan is a very seasoned veteran of tournament play. He should be able to deal with a legitimate accidental selection of assist type. no need to sell yourself short.
Dan: it totally sucks this happened to you, but at least it brings up a good example of things that need to get looked at further.
What did people do when they accidentally picked the wrong assists in MvC2? Yeah yeah, different game, blah blah, but I’m just a little curious. Sucks for everyone involved though. But let’s figure out a standard, set it, and move on.
Good shit to everyone in the tournies over the weekend, glad to see lots of names I recognize dominating top 8 and above.
You new folks better keep coming out! Sabre’s a crotchety old man who thinks y’all are a bunch of pussies. Prove him wrong!
