AWOL & ATB Boston Street Fighter 4 Tourney May 23rd!

I don’t even know what this means. Most of the replies to this tourney have been hands down the worst replies I have ever seen anywhere on the internet. It’s just constant insular snarkiness and belly aching about things not being up to some obtuse standard which no one seems able to explain.

I guess some people need things spelled out to them. It’s obvious you haven’t been to many tournaments lately or perhaps at all.

Two venues for one event each hosting the tournament on a different console. Extremely confusing since other tournaments (look at the tournaments section of SRK) run one venue. With these two venues running the tournament on different consoles exclusively you effectively have 2 separate tournaments for the same game being run at the same time. All tournaments I’ve been to (also refer to the tournaments section of SRK for current tournaments to compare) have run in one venue with one type of tournament per game.

$25.00 is almost the same amount as the venue fee for Evolution. Will this event be the same scale as Evolution? It will never be with a player cap of 64 people. Typically I encourage players of all skill levels to attend tournaments - it’s good to gain experience in a high-pressure environment at the cost of $5 or $10. But $25 for the pleasure of playing a few games and losing to better players? Not all of us are top players with equal chances of winning the entire tournament.

I’ve never seen an online registration where I have to print out a form and hand it in personally. Very odd.

As others have asked - where is the remaining 30% of the pot? I assume it goes towards the venue and comes back in the form of the prizes. Typically if a venue wants to collect money, they charge a separate venue fee. Pot is typically divided 70/20/10 for 1st/2nd/3rd places respectively. Separation of venue fee and pot means there is no question as to who is owed what. 50/20 for 1st/2nd is extremely non-standard (check the tournaments section of SRK for more info).

Those are all the issues I see with this tournament - others with tournament experience should chime in also. At this point the only reason I’m still considering attending this tournament is because Pryde is associated with it.

ernestw: Thanks for the support and consideration. I’ve bee told now that they are gonna be specifically housing just 360 consoles. There’s a schedule up already on here http://www.atbleague.com/sf4 .

There will be about 4 tvs. They may just cut it down to 1 location, cuz of the turn out. They don’t understand that most gamers tend to sign up the day of the tournament and most players don’t ever register online, unless it’s evolution. I’m just helping them out, if you have any concerns, just voice it out.

As for the 30% pot, it goes to the house. I’ll talk to them about it more, to see if they can take less and give a third place prize.

E pretty much hit the nail on the head with all the points. For 25 bones i guess there should be a third prize. I agree that 25$ is a turn off because people like me that sux cant get any tourney practice in. I cant pay my 25$ to get spanked first 2 rounds to you good boston players . How about everyone come to the garland ave arcade for $10 tourney/bbq hahaha!

Yeah, I haven’t been in a fighting game tourney before, that must be why I’m looking forward to it rather than bitching non-stop.

Apparently this has been scrapped. So non-issue. Unless you’re practicing quantum complaining.

Well no. Is an entry fee a evaluation of the scale of a particular event derived from a perfect free market? I mean the way Evo makes money and the way these guys intend to make money is totally different. I’m not demanding the fee be higher or anything absurd, though I understand their choice. Again, if you don’t like it you couldn’t have decided to not sign up long ago, rather than bitching in the thread.

I registered online! So you’re unfortunately looking insane with this quote.

Dude what are you OCDing about? I really don’t see the functional difference between Having a 17.50 entrance fee and a 7.50 venue fee. I mean it would still seem like there is just as little question as to who is owed what, I don’t even know what you’re trying to imply there. Like the SRK sponsored way of dividing money has in it some inherently fairness which appeals to man at a fundamental level, and all other ways of dividing money infuriate man?

I mean, you either want to go or you don’t. I don’t see why you have to hedge around the decision the entire time having a little Sweet 16 style fit about how your parents got you an Audi rather than a Porsche.

I’d love to! Is this a thing? My main thing here is that I know there really aren’t arcades around, and I’ve just assumed there really aren’t tournaments around(or they’re very hush-hush, cloak and dagger), so I figured I’d give this one a try. I mean if I could go into five $5 dollar tourneys around Boston all at once, I’d be doing that, though I’m pretty sure I can’t!

haha, thats just what we used to call my parents place. Get together and play all the games. Since it IS getting nice out, if we REALLY wanted to, we could try and set up an outdoor tourney lol at my parents place. Charge a small venue fee and use that money for food and drinks. Now that im talking about it, it sounds cool lol.

But seriously, in the boston area there is not much. In framingham at GU dan says he is holding a 5$ tourney every tues. They also have 1 tourney a month I belive?? (each week is a diff game) In the boston area, I guess there is nothing? Maybe this awol place should have weekly/monthly 5$ tournies or something if they are willing. I might be speaking for myself, but maybe some of the guys feel ripped off to pay 25$ only to lose to eachother who we play all the time, thats all. Nothing against the venue or people running it.

I know how the rest feel. I think we may be a little spoiled from traveling and paying lower venue fees/entry and what not. I am probably not going to play at this but Ill go with the rest to watch if they decide to go.

BTW try to make it to the GU tournies. I think dan has been slacking in the postings cuz half of us didnt know abot the one this past weekend. The more people the better. The days they DO run tournies, its 2 per day one at 1pm and one later on. I bet if enough people start coming they will do like teams and stuff.

Who is this guy? lol

Well… if you’d have been to any tourneys before maybe you could actually realize why people are “bitching” instead of looking completely clueless most of the time. Let the veterans handle it.

My main issue is with the non-transparency in the way the pot is being distributed (which FYI isn’t even specified in their own site). If they would of made it clear in the rules from the beginning they would of never ended up looking so shady and i would of never had an issue with it. There have been plenty of tourneys where players have been scammed, people here have been going to them for over a decade and aren’t suckers.

As Pryde stated, its their first time organizing a tourney so both positive and negative comments will only help them in hopes of even having a relatively successful tournament(s). Obviously they wouldn’t have changed it to just one location and only Xbox if it wasn’t for all the valid complaints so get over it and stop crying. If you really cant handle “bitching non-stop” i suggest you stop using the internets.

Why? If your seniority was worth something you wouldn’t have to ask for people to back off when you’re challenged.

I don’t know, it seemed about as legitimate as anything else. Were there a rash of fighting game tourney scams or does your inflated self worth make you sure that SOMEONE must have it out for you? I just don’t get the issue here, why would these guys compromise their existing business by doing a fighting tourney scam? How does that make sense in the real world? People keep repeating this like it makes sense, it’s pretty funny to see you say something outrageous like this over and over, then make it out like I’m being unreasonable.

I think it was pretty obvious all the while that whatever isn’t prize money would be going to organizers, I think the 50% 20% figures were around for awhile additionally(granted they were provided by pryde, but he seems like a good cat). Maybe being able to see what they meant is a horrible quality of being new to all this, and I should work toward your autistic confusion about anything that isn’t organized like Evo?

Haha, I think they changed it to one venue because they didn’t get many PS3 people. Though you can continue styling yourself as sko Erin Brockovich for being a whiner.

Oh I can handle it, though I’m not definitely going to sit back while you guys style yourself as concerned community members for getting your crybaby bitch on.

I can definitely agree with some of the negative comments. Though that original post “Are these guys players or just some random gaming losers that just want to be around the fighting game scene. Fighting game tournements are best run by people that know the culture espeically when bullshit goes down on tournament day.” was just too much, in addition with you guys being completely bewildered by that 30%. I mean this level of insularity is probably why such events are so rare.

You need to watch your damn mouth, you’re starting to get personal with people you do not even know on a personal level and your butthurt childish antics are making it look like you have some personal stake in this tourney. Chill the fuck out, the people you are talking shit to are well respected upstanding individuals in this community who are respectfully expressing concerns, so just lay off it before it gets ugly.

To tell you the truth now that tga is down the serious players here are probably looking for a nice local tourney but so far this ish looks real… you know

Yeah upstanding members of the community respectfully voicing their opinions, haha, what a crock of shit.

who won this tourney?

…who gives a shit? This shit looks suspect

  1. nestor
  2. gabe
  3. ernest
  4. pryde

Turned out to be a good tourney and run really well. I only got there after the pool stuff was done. But seemed like the guys were pretty happy with it. GJ for a first tourney.

I was gonna drop by after they finished the round robin and watch the double eliminations… but i went to the wrong store and thought it was over =/

I just cannot =( hard enough at this, though here it goes =(

Anyway, it was a pretty good tourney, and they let people get in a pretty good amount of casual games too. It was nice to see some seriously tight players, also it was fun to see how fucking nervous I got. All in all a good time.

good shit guys

Im bringing my turbo pad to the next tourney, my secret weapon against ernest
