I think it’s possible since Shyamalan was announced as the writer, director, and producer back in January 2007. Book 3 started in September 2007 and Ember Island wasn’t until July 2008.
Only thing that bothers me about all the hate are the people complaining about the pronunciation of Ahng.
It’s pronounced authentically in the movie. If the writers or creators of the anime pronounced it like “Aaang,” then they’re the ones who are retarded.
But that’s about all I’ll give to Night for this movie. It looks horrible in all other aspects.
Doesn’t matter if the show pronounced it wrong though. Shows the source material so they should be pronounced the same. It’s called consistency. If your gonna be wrong at least be consistently wrong.

If you name someone with the intention of it sounding a certain way phonetically, you won’t be wrong in the pronunciation of their name.
Well the source material certainly isn’t gonna win any favors from me if the creators aren’t even gonna bother to do their research. If Night is gonna be accused of racial bending, then the creators should be accused of being ignorant and not figuring out the authentic pronunciation for their main character.
I’m not siding with Night or the creators. As someone who understands Chinese, it just irks me to see a lot of ill-directed hate on the fact that Night got the pronunciation right. But if people wanna keep deluding themselves for their own satisfaction, that’s their choice.
edit: The problem is the name is based off of Chinese, a source with existing formalities of pronunciation. I wouldn’t have a problem with it if it was based off some alien language or whatever. Heck, I wouldn’t even have cared if people didn’t get on Night for this issue. It’s the fact that they are hounding him for doing something factually correct (even despite the source material) that bothers me.
