Stills:
#1 Aegis by Calvin Klein
Too good. Exactly how I’d imagine a Calvin Kline add would look if they used sprite/cartoon art. It’s a little awkward because of the mirrored effect in the"floor", which makes it look like he’s levitating. The only thing I can think to make this more pefect is to mirror his whole body, so that it looks like he’s actually on the floor, rather than levitating above it. Everything fits together well, and it really looks smooth and “cool”. Great stuff.
#2 Combos
This one’s a riot. I really love this one. The sprite and the text really stand out from the background. The background looks appealing without taking away from the foreground. The text is a little hard to read, but not too hard. It’s cute, funny, and creative. The concept is sweet and everything goes together well. The blurb is a real gem. Nice work. This was a tough decision between Combos and CK. I think on a technical level, this one is the best. But I think what put CK over the top, for me, was being edgy and bold.
#3 Hanes
Funny stuff. I think the background is suiting, but rather bland and boring. I could look at Jam’s cheeks for a long time, but the background and text really make me not want to. The concept, however, was good and the joke was pretty funny. Nice job.
Honorable mention: Duc Do King
You deserve props for editing the King logo, IMO. As for the av the background could have been something original. It’s a really great inside joke. But, I say inside joke because I think it would have more of an effect on people who have met Duc. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the pleasure, so the joke sort of falls flat (even though I get the joke). Can’t really poke fun at the guy for trying to make a buck and for beasting with Spiral. At least, not without knowing him personally. Still, a job well done.
Animations:
#1 Think Easier
Wow. This one may not be particularly funny, but it impressed me on a technical level. It catches your eye and draws you in. Great way to display the message, and very nice animation. My only complaints with this one is that you can’t really tell where the start and end of the message is. It could have used some sort of “title” or “end” screen to let the viewer know when the message was over or when it was starting up again. The message was kind of boring, but it was presented in a wonderful fashion.
#2 Coming Near You
Funny stuff. Good execution and nice animations. The text flys by a little too fast for my taste, but I suppose I’m just slow. Not much else to say about this one. It’s good on a technical level and got a chuckle out of me. But, it doesn’t really wow me, and the joke is kind of bland grade school recess humor and not really hilarious.
#3 Swiffer Wet
Funny funny stuff. I get the message, but I think a few lines of text could have really helped it out. Something funny and catchey would have really added to this. I think the gore seems a little rushed, too. Could have made it look more detailed and interesting. Could have added a scream to Ken or something to lighten it up a bit. Still, it is really good. Good joke and good execution. The dripping blood is a nice touch. Not sure where the background is from, but I also thought it was a nice touch.
Honorable mentions:
Just Parry It
A great homage. But really, it seems forced. A good effort, but could have been better, IMO. It’s funny and clever, but needs more. The concept just doesn’t seem to fit together well.
Strong Enough for a Man
This one is a bit weird. Really good use of sprites. Props for making the deodorant sprite and props for the bloody text at the end. Not sure why a pH imbalance would make his ass explode. Sort of tongue-in-cheek humor, but nothing spectacular. Could have used a background and could have had a bit more dramatization and emotion in it.
