Avatar Challenge Battle #3! Voting in Progress

Well I’ll put up the money for the next av battle if there ever is one.

But I think one of the main problems is that the theme here seems more geared towards animation and those who animate avs. I mean you had two animated avs for examples for the entry thread. But I think in order to garner more support/entries, perhaps there should be more of a focus, but less of restrictions, also less of an emphasis on certain av types that might favor animation.

I guess in some way you could have an av battle that’s just a Chun-theme, Just a Urien theme (anything). A Final Fantasy av battle, a marvel av battle, perhaps a magazine av battle. Heck perhaps even a non-prem size av battle. I know that a few of the people here can’t really work with the 160x100 av space like some of us are readily and more experienced with, so that could be a problem.

But ever in doubt, have a feedback thread after this one and heck even vote on a theme or get ideas for suggestions. I too am a bit disappointed with the turn out since it should have had a bit more than the last one (that one was a success) but who knows. We’ll have to see.

OC

i was thinking giving viewers more participation. Like make it a poll and have judges as well… and the poll will be counted as one vote.

also the deadline shouldn’t be over a weekend. I’m thinking more ppl will try to make an avatar when they’re bored like on a week day. So if you give out your warnings they’ll be more inclined to do it when it’s not on a weekend. just my 2 cents :karate:

i gotta agree with this one.

i’ve sumbit ideas like that in the past to gqac but they got passed up. one theme i thought would be great would be a “make fun of poison” theme. i actually asked ROBOTRON to make this but he chickend out:sad:

i was thinking we should do a picture profile battle! 160x 160 around 100kb

did we always have that btw? cause i justed noticed it now while i was stalking OC :karate:

Ha ha, the parry av was better executed than the one we thought up, quiche. I liked how it was recognizable but short.

I would have submitted entries if I had known this was going on . >_<

Well, Impact Hound, “just parry it” doesn’t have popeye, so I don’t know how it could be better executed…(besides, I’m really proud of those Popeye ones, dammit!)

I’ll shoot you, (and whoever else wants) a pm when I start up the next one.

Also, IH, did you see the first 2 contests? #1 was kinda a bust, but it did a good job of setting up how to run these things and generating some interest, and then #2 rocked hard.

enter the next one, and spread the word! (and I’ll put up the money for the next one, OC, but if it doesn’t get enough entrants, I’ll take you up on that and let you fund battle #5, okay?)

…seriously.

EDIT: Heh…I was gonna do a still one for this contest that had a girl (prolly chun) saying something like “…I have something to tell you…about the birth control” on one side, and on the other side said “In the time it takes to clean up the stairs, you could save 15% or more on your car insurance”…I didn’t do it cause I thought someone else would have the idea tho…oh well.

I just logged on and took a quick look at the entries. I sure did need that laugh (i feel like shit).

I’ll try my best to review and vote. Need some time to look things over.

I don’t think these contests are too geared towards animation. A good still avatar can hang just fine with most animated avatars.

haha i was so damn sure someone was gonna do a geico one so i avoided that too…

My inital one i wanted to do strider with doom calling oroboros and doom anti air against sentinel and write “NOt Going Anywhere For a While”? Grab a Snickers or something… but i couldn’t find any block animations or oroboros =/

edit - word xeno… now where the hell is random and chibi?

@SunocO

i couldn’t ask you though… you were a judge  i’ll make one now thx

Stills:

#1 Aegis by Calvin Klein
Too good. Exactly how I’d imagine a Calvin Kline add would look if they used sprite/cartoon art. It’s a little awkward because of the mirrored effect in the"floor", which makes it look like he’s levitating. The only thing I can think to make this more pefect is to mirror his whole body, so that it looks like he’s actually on the floor, rather than levitating above it. Everything fits together well, and it really looks smooth and “cool”. Great stuff.

#2 Combos
This one’s a riot. I really love this one. The sprite and the text really stand out from the background. The background looks appealing without taking away from the foreground. The text is a little hard to read, but not too hard. It’s cute, funny, and creative. The concept is sweet and everything goes together well. The blurb is a real gem. Nice work. This was a tough decision between Combos and CK. I think on a technical level, this one is the best. But I think what put CK over the top, for me, was being edgy and bold.

#3 Hanes
Funny stuff. I think the background is suiting, but rather bland and boring. I could look at Jam’s cheeks for a long time, but the background and text really make me not want to. The concept, however, was good and the joke was pretty funny. Nice job.

Honorable mention: Duc Do King
You deserve props for editing the King logo, IMO. As for the av the background could have been something original. It’s a really great inside joke. But, I say inside joke because I think it would have more of an effect on people who have met Duc. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the pleasure, so the joke sort of falls flat (even though I get the joke). Can’t really poke fun at the guy for trying to make a buck and for beasting with Spiral. At least, not without knowing him personally. Still, a job well done.

Animations:

#1 Think Easier
Wow. This one may not be particularly funny, but it impressed me on a technical level. It catches your eye and draws you in. Great way to display the message, and very nice animation. My only complaints with this one is that you can’t really tell where the start and end of the message is. It could have used some sort of “title” or “end” screen to let the viewer know when the message was over or when it was starting up again. The message was kind of boring, but it was presented in a wonderful fashion.

#2 Coming Near You
Funny stuff. Good execution and nice animations. The text flys by a little too fast for my taste, but I suppose I’m just slow. Not much else to say about this one. It’s good on a technical level and got a chuckle out of me. But, it doesn’t really wow me, and the joke is kind of bland grade school recess humor and not really hilarious.

#3 Swiffer Wet
Funny funny stuff. I get the message, but I think a few lines of text could have really helped it out. Something funny and catchey would have really added to this. I think the gore seems a little rushed, too. Could have made it look more detailed and interesting. Could have added a scream to Ken or something to lighten it up a bit. Still, it is really good. Good joke and good execution. The dripping blood is a nice touch. Not sure where the background is from, but I also thought it was a nice touch.

Honorable mentions:

Just Parry It
A great homage. But really, it seems forced. A good effort, but could have been better, IMO. It’s funny and clever, but needs more. The concept just doesn’t seem to fit together well.

Strong Enough for a Man
This one is a bit weird. Really good use of sprites. Props for making the deodorant sprite and props for the bloody text at the end. Not sure why a pH imbalance would make his ass explode. Sort of tongue-in-cheek humor, but nothing spectacular. Could have used a background and could have had a bit more dramatization and emotion in it.

I feel bad I missed this; I had one started but I’ve been kinda busy and didn’t get it finished in time. I really like the “Combos” one

current score…

stills

combos 9pts

aegis 8pts

hanes 7pts

anime

just parry it 8pts

“gba” 5pts and “progresive” 5pts

“secret” 3pts and swifer 3pts

still waitn on RN and MC…

add a U and a D and u’d get RUN DMC…ok, i’m bored:sweat:

Next time you give them an absurdly broad theme that everyone can work with and keep it to either stills or animation, not both.

Anyways, with only so few entries for both categories it doesn’t offer much to judge :|~

In order from 1st to 3rd for the still category:

1st:
Aegis by Calvin Klein:

Honestly this is the only still avatar that works to fit the theme. The space is managed really well, but I’d say my only complaint is the background. Black is too negative a color. Going with a lighter shade of the brown being used, or possibly even white would have worked out better. An actual background could have worked too, but most likely not as well as just a single color. The reflection is a somewhat nice touch, though that too could have been better worked upon.

2nd:
Combos:

Somewhat cute idea, but it falls flat seeing as how I can’t read a damn thing. The text is a bit too small, though that could have been rectified if you had chosen a darker color as an outline. Black would probably have been the better choice. Other than that (after having to reduce my resolution) the text works well, and the space is managed nicely. The background is dull and blends in a bit too much with the rest of the avatar though, sets up a bit of a monochromatic feel to it, and that’s obviously not good in this case. The bag and logo are a bit too close together as well, bit disruptive / distracting.

3rd:
Hanes:

This one got third because I don’t get the actual commercial value (nor implied comedic) of Duc Do King. The font choice is a bad one, and it kissing (having the text be far too close to the end of the work, in this case the top of the avatar) doesn’t bode well for it either. I don’t know what the hell the background is, but nudging the text down just a bit (and picking a better looking font) would have done wonders for this avatar.

In order from 1st to 3rd for the animated category:

1st:

Think Easier:

Man, I know some of you think I’m cracked for this, but honsetly I love this avatar. It’s so simple, but the flow from start to finish never bumps or skips. Instead of using the same size Slayer for each section of the avatar, the sizes differ to go with each section, thus not disrupting the actual message being brought across. All the animations work, the font choice works, the moving background works, and the end is a great touch. I love it.

2nd:
Swiffer Wet:

Short, sweet, no words, right to the point, funny. Look at Ken after Urien knocks him the first time, what a bloody stump (I found it ridicously funny looking). The last few frames are great, and the background works excellent to set up a comedic contrast, good job.

3rd:
Strong Enough for a Man:

Even though Coming Near You and Just Parry It are better executed, SEFAM’s idea (imo) is more original and better executed. The animation is choppy (though I believe the game is to blame) it does its job. Again, a background other than black would have done wonders for this avatar, and the bloody text at the end is hard to read as well.

Best of Show goes to Think Easier.
