Augh Help!

Okay guys, at my school (err video gameclub) we’re hosting a Street Fighter Alpha 3 tournament next week (and I’m tournament director, and I totally opposed this game for tourney, I was asking for Guilty Gear X2 #Reload since everyone there plays it o.o). I have NEVER played this game seriously, I’ve only dabbled in X-Rolento and X-Chun. Got some basic mechanics down. I seriously think that NO ONE there knows the technicalities of the game so I think I’m kinda safe for that. But I do have some question reguarding the game…

Is the Dreamcast version anywhere near arcade perfect, or does it matter since I’m playing X Rolento/Chun.

In the AA SFA3 (arcade, not arrange) does whiff grabs still build meter?

And I’m pretty sure X-Rolento or Chun was pretty high up in the tier listings…

I’ve already saw some stuff about X Chun, is there anything about X Rolento here, Does he kinda play like his CvS2 counterpart?? My laptop is pretty damn slow when I try and search, it’ll take me about 10 minutes…

p.s. Is there a Dreamcast >PS2 converter, or will I have to relearn all my stuff on stick on the spot? (I do play stick (for CvS2), but I feel comfortable playing A3 on DC pad for some reason…)

p.p.s. Is it worth learning X-Ryu?

Dreamcast version is terrible. The sprites are actually smaller, so hitboxes and everything are totally different. Pretty sure Dhalsim, V-ISM and some other crap are nerfed too.
Throw whiffs do build meter in the arcade. I didn’t think there was anywhere where they didn’t.

Most of the time, if you want to be serious about competing, you’re gonna have to use V-ISM unless you’re using Gen, Guy, Bison, Blanka, Balrog, Ken, Chun’, or Dhalsim, and even then some would argue Chun’ and 'Sim are better on V.
Since you’re just playing at some random tourney at your school though, and since you’re using the shitty DC version, you’re probably better off in A/Xl.
From the people you’re playing though, it sounds like you’re just planning to try and random your way to victory, lol.

Use the stick. It’s better in the long run. Anything you can do on a pad, you can do more easily on a stick.

There’s already a tier topic, but the tier list is something like:

Top Tier:
V-Akuma
V-Sakura
A/V-Dhalsim
V-Zangief

High Mid’ Tier:
V-Ryu
V-Charlie
V-Sagat
V-Claw
V-Karin
V-Sodom
V-Rolento
A-Guy
A-Gen
V-Cody (If only because he does really well against ‘Sim and ‘Gief (provided you don’t let the latter get in). His lack of a reliable cross-up really hurts him though, and he has just as much trouble with Chun’ as most of the mid’ tierers. As well, his short guardbar can get him in trouble with people like Blanka and Vega. Boxer, 'Gief and Akuma can glitch his dodge too so watch out.

Mid’ Tier:
A/V-Chun-li (Like others have said. Below the top guys, but wayyy above everyone else. Lot of people have bad match-ups against her too.)

V-Juni
A-Ken
V-Cammy
V-Adon
A/X-Boxer
A-Dictator
V-Birdie
A-Blanka
V-Honda

Low Tier:
V-R.Mika
V-Rose
V-Dan
V-Juli

Everyone below Rolento is pretty debatable though.
I think Birdie’s underrated. He’s got a high priority splash, c. FP is decent AA, and you can easily eat a shitload of damage off a bull charge if you’re not careful, and it’s difficult to punish. His VC’s are pretty good too.

No we’re using the Alpha Anthology on ps2.

I only have DC version and PSP version (psp version can’t build meter with whiff throws).

And I’m thinking of playing X-Chun. When I announced that there will be no console characters like Guile, Fei-Long and shit, they were all like “awwww damn” And I told them we’re using AA…soo…

Is it better to play on DC or PSP, because I have NO access to either a machine, emulator with A3, or AA.

And man, I guess I’m gunna have to go impromptu with stick, I haven’t used Stick on Alpha 3 since Evo2k5 at Gameworks…

If you’re using the Alpha Anthology for PS2, you can use the console characters.

You should prolly search for a dipswitch listing somewhere, though.

I don’t want no bloody console characters on my SFA3 tourney!

Oook. Well then use the PS2 AA and set the dipswitches to make it arcade perfect. What’s the problem?

I don’t see the big deal really. Not like any of them are broken.
In fact, all the people who pick Guile thinking he’ll be anything like his WW self will just be handicapping themselves, and making it easier for you to pick up some wins.

Use the emulated A3 in the meantime though. It’s essentially the same as the arcade version.

Oh how do you deal with raging noobs who just like mash random stuff because they know movelist, but don’t know how to really do anything… Isn’t that when V-ism come handy?

What’s the easiest V-ism char to use and is worth using, and can do on my PSP version…

If people are just mashing out random crap, learn the counter. Most people can anti-air very effectively from the ground since you can’t air block ground normals. Jumping straight up or back and attacking can work as a preemptive anti-air as well. If they start blocking those, you can always air throw.
Be very wary of attacking newer players when they’re getting up, because they love to wake-up super. Also, watch out for random supers when they jump next to you, or directly after the recovery of one of their moves.

I’d have to say, that’s the one thing I dislike about Alpha 3. The relatively short guard bar makes it easier than it should be for people to just spam shit and actually succeed in doing damage, especially if you’re on A/V with the smaller guard bar.

I know it was to discourage turtling, but it also seems to encourage mindless rushdown and discourage blocking for anymore than like 3 seconds at a time. It also means that not having a wake-up move is a huge disadvantage.
It’s especially annoying when you’re fighting high GC damage characters like Blanka, or people with hard to punish moves like Adon.

V-Sakura is probably the most brain-dead V character to use though.
I have to wonder who thought it was a good idea to give her 4 GC notches and someone like Sodom who has no wake-up, 3.

Wtf is wrong with the console-exclusive characters? Especially since A3 Upper is like…4-7 times better than regular A3.

The VC’s don’t work properly in Upper (i think) and they took away crouch cancels. Don’t know why, they were dope.

Do they still have that V-ism CC thread around here?

…It’s stickied on the first page. Open your eyes man.

I think Sakura and Ryu are like tied for braindead V-ism combos.

Okay, tournament ended today

We had so much crap scrubs, I played X-Chun and like mopped the floor with them. I won, so I just donated prize money (10 dollars we’re getting club up) to the club, so we can have more cash prizes I can win in the future. I did loose one round, so I got pissed and just used A-Akuma, and just l. qcbk like tons of times, cuz they didn’t know how to recover, so it was basically a fake infinite. They sucked. I was actually thinking of going as Dan.

what school was this? high school? chabot? cal state? I woulda come down…
