I was just wondering something but found that your PMs weren’t working so I created a thread out here. I remember we had a discussion some time ago about how you had put an extra fan on your Xbox 360 which you believe may have been the reason why yours did not fail.
I’ve been seriously considering getting a 360 Elite and I was just wondering if you had any information on how I could go about putting whatever fan you had on an Elite if I were to buy one.
Also, how often and for how long of periods of time would you have the 360 up and running where the system would actually be generating a significant amount of heat (i.e. while gaming)?
Would putting a fan on an Elite void its warranty?
Have there been any reports of Falcon chip 360 machines being released that wasn’t in some ugly ass green Halo shell?
Have there been any confirmed reports yet of Falcon 360s red ringing? (If so linky please )
On a completely seperate note, please send links to where I can find that JP show you were talking about with the comedian playing old classic games.
Hello, poonage here! I’m not fubarduck, but we pretty much know the same type of stuff (psychic link) so perhaps I can answer your questions in his stead!
The fan I use is just a Nyko Intercooler. It snaps on to the back of your X360 and plugs in between the X360 and the Power cord. It works fine on an Elite and takes about 5 seconds to attach/plug-in.
Before I attached the fan, it would lock up within 1 hour of playing Gears of War. Then, it started locking up every 10 minutes of Gears of War. Then I got the Nyko Intercooler, and no more freezes whatsoever, played through the rest of the game for 5-6 hours on Live after that. Also stopped my dashboard from freezing, which happened occasionally.
Nope, doesn’t void the warranty
Apparently some of the new non-green 360’s have the Falcon but,
Supposedly there was already a report or two on Neogaf of a Falcon Chip X360 RRoD’ing. Sorry, don’t have the link, try searching Neogaf (www.neogaf.com/forum).
For the TV Show, Game Center CX, I downloaded it with a Japanese P2P program. It’s a lot of hassle to install or configure, I will just bring DVDs next time.
I have the xbox 360 and it does not red ring even without a fan. My first xbox 360 elite had the problem that required the fan, so I returned it. It does not freeze or red ring when I play games for hours upon hours. I believe that the new xboxs have the problem fixed because mine came with a piece of paper that said if I encountered any problems, not to return it to the store but return it to xbox. I did not get this paper on my first xbox, so I assume that the problem is fixed. I have gears of war and halo 3 and rainbow 6 vegas none freeze.
Did a little research on the Nyko Intercooler. Seems that this thing is having its own set of problems. In these articles it is explained that since the Nyko Intercooler snaps on to the Xbox 360s power outlet and first takes the power it needs and then sends the rest to the 360 itself, there have been problems with 360 components not getting the power they need leading to its own set of RRoD.
It has also been reported that the Nyko Intercooler has caused overheating issues through the Xbox 360s power system. The cooler would even leave burn marks on the system shell itself.
Microsoft knows of the Nyko Intercooler and it’s problems and has been quoted as saying that if a Nyko Intercooler is used it does void the warranty. If they get a system with the tell-tale burn marks they’ll send it back to the customer untouched.
Doing a search only on the words “xbox” and “nyko intercoooler” on Google gives 3 hits on the first page talking about the problems the Nyko Intercooler has. Either way, I’m thinking that the Nyko Intercooler isn’t a good option. Not only does it cause its own set of problems it DOES void the warranty. This means that even if it’ll bring down the risk of hardware failure on the 360, if it craps out itself you’re left off worse than if you RRoDed without the Nyko fan.
Microsoft techs have suggested using the Pelican fan system since it draws power from a USB port rather then grabbing the power before it even gets to the system though it is also 3rd party and not supported by Microsoft.
Anyone have more suggestions or experiences with the Nyko Intercooler, Pelican, or other cooling solutions?
I haven’t been able to find anything within Neogaf but its tough since the forums don’t seem to have a good search function. I’m probably going to need to do more research on this whole Xbox 360 thing.
from what i’ve been told, the best way to prevent problems with overheating etc., is to simply have the 360 system out in the open where it can get sufficient airflow and maintain a good temperature.
the cooling fan attachments have been known to cause problems, so don’t connect anything to the system. heck, just keep it out in the open, away from corners or enclosures, and perhaps even have it near a regular fan, or in range of a fan.
I am looking into getting a home theatre surrond sound system. What sources do you trust for reviews and such? Also, I want to mod my jap ps2 to play american games, is it possible? (If the latter question is inappropriate I will edit it out)
Thanks for the input Cmutt. I don’t know how out in the open I would be keeping a a 360 if I were to get one. I would want to put it into my TV stand to minimize the mess but I’ll probably end up waiting a bit more on this one.
