Astro City restoration (warning lots of pics)

The PS3 is kind of weird when it comes to RGB signals. It supports RGBS at 480i, and RGsB at 480p.

I’m not sure if you would be able to split the Green wire to both the green and sync connections on a typical arcade monitor and have it work, but it’s worth a shot. Some of the new monitors may support sync on green. I really have no idea.

But a typical 15khz arcade monitor should have no problems with RGBS at 480i. I think this would be a very good way to easily connect a PS3 to an arcade cab without having to deal with converters.

You can just use a JVS to JAMMA I/O converter to play SFIV (or SF4 running off a PS3 using a JVSPAC) on an Astro. The I/O will convert the 31khz signal to 15khz and convert the JVS I/O to JAMMA.

a JVSPAC will allow convert the PS3 I/O to JVS.

The “easiest” way to use a PS3 w/ SF4 on a non-JVS cab is use a JVSPAC and a JVS to JAMMA converter. Less wires less BS no need to hack pads and use mickey moused video converters.

The cabs pictured in the warehouse are actually “mine,” since they are from my group buy. hehe. All presold. There are still a couple bare cabs still in the warehouse like this one (two more, actually).

If anyone is interested in the shells or cabinets (we will have more next month), call (888) 378-9416. Tell Kingsley (or Serei) that Art sent you, he will hook you up.

Hope to see more of the restoration soon!

Awesome! Glad you started posting here again. I thought you only posted on that other forum (NG). I didnt want to start a new profile just to post there.

As for the status of the cab sorry I havent posted anything in while, been busy with life. But everything has been stripped of the tiny parts. Gave her a nice wash.

Next step is to bring out the sander so I can get a nice coat of primer on her, then on to the paint. Hope I can have it ready before they get their next shipment when I pick up a monitor from them.

oh and Hey KAZ, do you happen to know of those flat screen monitors that Kingsley has would fit on the original Sega monitor mounts? I forgot the name of the monitor but he already had on setup on an Astro at the warehouse, I got to try out KOF on it, (pretty sweet looking btw). He was saying something about it to me when I picked up the cab, but I forgot.

This worklog looks awesome so far. Can’t wait to see what you do with your cabinet.

Haha thanks. I lurk here (and NG) more than I post… in NG I’m mostly active in buying and selling (and sometimes tech), there’s a lot of “clique” mentality over there.

Anywho, as far as the flat CRT, I’ve no clue if it’ll fit the factory mounts. The one you saw in the warehouse is mine (lol!), and it came that way from Japan. I can remove the monitor bezel and take pics of how it is installed so you have a reference.

The flat monitors I believe are coming on the next container.

Who’s doing your paint? I might want to tear one down myself and have it re-done… we are working on replacement vinyl so if you need some, we can probably get you some. All of the side art and the cp art.

Keep us updated! Thanks!

EDIT: I should have also mentioned, even with a JVS to JAMMA adapter you still need a separate CGA converter… something I overlooked since I am so used to Naomi which can output 15khz on it’s own :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, I’m actually going to be picking one of those flat monitors from you guys when that shipment comes in. SOOOO excited for this :woot: After Kingsley showed me your machine, it convinced me that i dont really need to have a round tube. And also I was planing on getting the decals from u guys too, I guess Kingsley said that your guy hasn’t got em printed yet.

Im actually doing the paint and sanding myself. I have a lil experience painting with autobody paint.

These are pics of the first CP that I picked up from you guys, after cleaning and painting it.
Before

After

Also here are some other projects I’ve worked on in the past.

So hopefully I can tackle a project as big as this.

Currently at 45% finished with the sanding.
I’ll post some pics of the complete sanded down parts when I’m finished.

Also, hey KAZ do u know if that monitor has a VGA input?

Very very nice! Did you use a single-stage or two-stage paint on that? I’m assuming you used a spray gun and not rattle cans or an airbrush… real nice, glossy finish.

My homie is still working on the cp overlays and the side art and all that crap… he just moved into a new shop so he’s a bit behind.

I’ll take a look at my cab and see if it has a VGA input, I honestly have not gotten around to looking yet… I don’t think it does, though.

Honestly, with those two sticks they were both done with the ol’ spray can method. Crazy huh?

But for the cab, I’m using an airless spray gun since it has more of a surface that I have to cover, and I wouldn’t be wasting that much paint through the over spray.

As for the monitor, reason being that I was curious about the VGA input was that I’m leaning towards the idea to turn this into a dedicated MAME cab with a nice front end. MAME, so that I wouldn’t have to worry about locating different boards for games I wanted to play around with.

Could you find the actual make and model# for that monitor so I can know exactly what I’m going to be working with?

Looks like you have a Sanwa licensed panel. Looking at my 2L12B, “POWER CONTROL SYSTEM” is aligned to the outside, not the inside, and the “1 PLAYER 2 PLAYER” text is not cut off by the start buttons. Actual player buttons are also closer to the top edge, and it looks like there’s less of a gap between the button rows on the original panel.

The “Licensed by Sega” text also tipped me off :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Looks good!

I know this is a super old thread, but I´m curious to know how the cab ended and if it is possible to restore them to their previous glory (quite impressed with those painting skills, could you give some directions on how to achieve those results?)

I don’t think these people still brows the forums.

arcadeotaku forum is the place to go for candy cab restoration info

Thanks, I’ll ask in Arcade Otaku and see how it goes.
