Ask 801 Strider

hey pm me too strider

:frowning:

lol

lol, I thought you couldnā€™t record because you had a ghetto setup?

Now for some character specific shit

Just thought about something randomā€¦how stupid Abel vs Yang is if they know the match.

You lose in footsies range (free)

You lose full screen (his meter building > yours)

You lose after a blocked step kick

You lose for free when it comes to priority

You lose when it comes to options (free)

You lose 30~40% health when knocked down (free)

You win in damage

Hurray?

Acually, itā€™s not that bad, you can win if you take hella risks. You definitely canā€™t win if you try to play the ground game though, youā€™ll get blown up. Itā€™s sad, I was watching Nekojita play vs Nemo to see if he had any tech Iā€™m missingā€¦nope, he just played hella random/risky. Sometimes it worked and he won off a couple solid reads, some times he would get blown the fuck up.

Vs T.Hawk, I think itā€™s 5-5, i used to believe Abel lost the match, but I see it as really winnable now. You still lose to Gief pretty free though, even with the green hand nerf. The fact that you lost U2 is pretty big here.

what do you do in the Hawk matchup?

our local guy here who is the best SF player in town by a large margin but always plays terrible chars like Hakan played Hawk against me the other day and I felt totally outgunnedā€¦ I never really felt like I had an advantage even after I got a knockdown on him.

Ummā€¦footsies? Itā€™s not as hard as you think, you just have to play it with a bit more patience, but be willing to take risks as well.

A couple tips:

Stay out of spireā€™s range, and punish every single whiffed one with step kick combo or cr.mk xx COD. Punish normal spires on block (sometimes hit, depends on spacing) with lp.TT. EX spire is -3 on block.

Hawkā€™s normals are no joke, so you are going to have to brush up your footsies 101. Most of his pokes are whiff-punishable with cr.mk xx cod.

Donā€™t be too scared of his wake-up, but at the same time donā€™t go balls-to-the-wall. Know how to bait shit out and punish accordingly. If you want to bait out a reversal, do a oki roll that leaves you right outside of SPD range, and wait. Punish everything with MAX damage.

Beware of his U1. Shit does too much damage and is easy as hell to setup, just look out for it when they have it stoked.

There are a couple other options you have to look out for, I can do a write up later if peeps want, since I learned the match-up from pretty much the best Hawk on earth, hands down (KOG), and do REALLY good against him.

not an abel player but i read the whole thread and im pretty curious about japanese guys. how are the japanese with him? and what is the abel vs guy matchup like after playing against them?

Yeah strider id appreciate a T.Hawk write up, I think I sorta know how to play the matchup, but Id still appreciate your input especially since you said you did really well against KOG

Side note.

Sā€™up, Strider. Was maining Yang for a while, but after his nerfs, I think Iā€™m just gonna play Makoto. Having mained Abel, what were the easiest and hardest parts about transitioning to her? I struggle dealing with that walkspeed. @_@

I didnā€™t see that many Japanese Guy players while there, the few I saw were doing alrightā€¦they werenā€™t dominating, but they were doing aiiight. The most impressive Guy I saw was Nox2 though, hands down. The dude has hella technology, and his throw game is on point. He was going on huge streaks against UltimateMaster Yun/Yangs in Taito. Respect. I didnā€™t get to play him, but I saw a couple of his matches, heā€™s definitely a player people have to look out for.

Oh, I did see him blow up Kiryu before I leftā€¦gawdlike.

Makoto was actually REALLY damn hard to transition toā€¦mainly because, like you said, her walk speed. Itā€™s a huge turn-off to her, and a main reason as to why sheā€™s so difficult to win with.

Best way to get over her walk speed is to learn how to use her dash + her forward-moving normals (fwd.mp/lk/mk/hk) and learning how to preemptively punish your opponents pokes as they are anticipating a dash-up. Once you get them scared of pressing buttons, shit is free.

It took me a while to get used to her playstyle and to incorporate my own swag and tech to her game. Biggest thing to note when learning her is thisā€¦learn to block. Like seriously BLOCK. Get comfortable with blocking for large periods at a time, itā€™s not that hard, you just have to have a little patience. Once you get in a good position or get a good read, go for the kill. Seriously, just go in and do it, you have to take risks with this character since your payout is HUUUGE, you just have to be smart about it.

Another huge part of her game that canā€™t be ignored what-so-ever are her blockstrings. She has the best block-strings in the game IMO (when it comes to priority, damage, positioning). Learn how to use her fwd.mp and her only 3-frame normal (fwd.lp) to keep them from pressing buttons. Donā€™t abuse Karakusa, let them kill themselves as they try to escape your brutal strings. If they start feeling comfortable blocking, dash up command throw, fuck it.

Trust me, she takes a long time to get used to, even longer to master. I havenā€™t even come close to mastering her, I just know enough to compete at a high level. I would actually love to take the time to master her though, since I think sheā€™s one of the funnest characters in the gameā€¦but, as you knowā€¦ABEL IS BACK BAYYBEEE!!

Empty jump beats beats EX FS and some attacks like Sakuraā€™s jHP beat c.mk.

lol i know that manā€¦ i wasnt talking about those casesā€¦

im thinking of going to the loc test today, gonna see how the gouki, viper, etc matchup feels like now after the new nerfs

lol vs gouki should be soooo much better after the st roundhouse nerfā€¦i hope

so yeah strider i tested/recorded the step kick shenanigans vs a few characters with my ghetto equipment, ill probably upload em raw for now just so that people can see whats upā€¦ or should i just wait and take time to edit and shit? i mean, im gonna learn that stuff but this weekend im not gonna be at home much

i basically did f.mk dash cr.lp cr.lp, to get the distance, then do the f.mk without the dash, hold downback for a moment(able to block cr.mk and stuff) and then proceed with another f.mk into dash cr.lp st.mp xx cod stuff.

of course the cr.lp will only connect if the f.mk is on CH, but i guess you should be able to hit confirm the st.hp on reaction anyway.

I was gonna get it up in HD, like I was doing with some of my Yang shit before I got lazyā€¦ like this:

I have absolutely zero experience editing thoughā€¦ but I assume Iā€™ll be able to figure that out. I wanted to have it done already, but I got busy randomly. I was gonna try to knock it out this weekend, but honestly, your shit doesnā€™t look bad HFX. I would make the set-up look a little cleaner, personally, and try to draw out the Counter Hit on the mashā€¦ but whatever.

If you wanna just do it, thatā€™s fine by meā€¦ unless weā€™re really looking to stress presentation here.

Nah, HAV youre still gonna do it , with better equipments and stuff. Thereā€™s no deadline or anything, plus ver.2012 is coming out LOL

Iā€™m doing it as a temporary fix, kinda, so to those people who didnt know can at least see and maybe explore more possibilitiesā€¦ Sure, Iā€™m interested in editing and stuff, but like most people, Iā€™m pretty busy with other things tooā€¦ I thought, for now, this is at least better than nothing. Id be happy if other abel players see the vid(s) and at least get the gist of the video and start working their own stuff from there. Maybe if they have the time, make a better, more clean video. Iā€™m not going to complain if there are better videos out there that get more views than mine or anything LOL

Since getting that CH is all about the timing of your opponent pressing buttons and also the timing of the 2nd step kick, I guess I didnt want to give the false impression that the 2nd step kick will always get a CHā€¦ nahmean?

Again, I admit shit is raw as fuck LOL I just went with whatever came to my mindā€¦ I think its probably nicer to test everything accordingly, you know, cr.lp, cr.mpā€¦ every possible options with reversal and non reversal timing. Iā€™ll plan the next one properlyā€¦ if i have the time.

I havenā€™t been playing Abel long, Iā€™m a Gen/Ken player picking up Abel but one thing I didnā€™t know was about Abelā€™s overhead/close standing roundhouse. How come I donā€™t see people use this more often? I looked at the frame data and it is -4 on block which isnā€™t great, but tbh itā€™s still a fast overhead and the range for the close to come in is pretty good. It also blows the fuck out of crouch teching considering on counterhit you can combo into rekkas.

I usually, at some point in a match after knockdown, do crossup, cr.short, overhead and it almost always catches people. Sometimes for trollā€™s sake I add on a sweep x lk wheel kick for a High low high low high blocking sequence. Yeah, the sweepxwheel kick is usually a stupid idea but I know sometimes after you scare people into not pressing buttons it can really work for pressure.

Nearly all of the abels ive seen/played, even myself, use standing roundhouse pretty often. So I dont know what are you talking about.

You get the gist of it, but I think you are doing it a bit slow. Try doing it a couple frames faster.

yeahā€¦ i managed to do it better after watching nekojita did it at a tournament yesterday (team of 3 abels, but they got ocvd by an adon in the grandfinals lol shits ugly)

anyway yeah, that video was just what i came up in under an hour and i was in a rush since i gotta leave soon.

in that video i did the 2nd kick lil bit slower because a little bit faster, abel could get hit by cr.mk (for ken)ā€¦ i just thought of delayin it a little bit more so that its possible to block any cr.mk-ish move in time.

ill mess around in training mode some more, some time this week.
