As someone new to the FGC, thank you for what you have done

A little background I guess is I’m a competitive FPS player. I played Halo mainly but I competed in games like CoD, UT, Shadowrun, GoW, Quake, etc. Now in about more than half of those games there was not that much content to teach you how to do what the pros did well. You had to learn how to predict spawns, strafe techs, techniques, shooting tips, etc all of those by yourself. Most pros or big guys would put content up but they were either really simple tips most players know, or just gameplay of them playing and commentating over it. Basically all the higher level stuff you learned by playing or by friends as you never read articles or videos for them since they were never there.

But it’s really different with the FGC, or it seems like that to me. James Chens First Attack series, tutorials for characters, Character sections, community members, etc are awesome. The influx of content I got from the FGC for games like SF4, UMvC3, etc are great as I see videos/posts that help me with my game greatly. Of course I still suck as I’m still pretty new but I’ve been getting constantly better and the content is a HUGE part for that. Definitely a big difference than what I got from the games I used to play competitively.

Not to mention that the normal users this time are way more helpful. I ask a lot of dumb questions and the community still helps, when it came to a lot of other games I competed in, the opposite would happen. Statements of being dumb, ignorant, etc were thrown sometimes and it felt that in forums with more higher level players that players who were lower skilled or new to the competitive aspect of the game were the odd one out. In SRK (Or at least the part of the forums I post in) it doesn’t seem like that as I ask very simple questions and users just answer them with no snide remarks

So keep doing what you guys are doing <3

the cool thing is that even with all that content out there, 90% of players will still pick Ryu and tatsu from full screen

but yeah if you want to actually improve it’s cool that all those resources are there. it’s kicked into overdrive once SF4 came out. there was stuff for games before that but the amount of content these days is just crazy.

There was a time when SRK and FGC in general wasn’t very noob-friendly. In fact it wasn’t very friendly at all. If you weren’t attending tournies your opinions weren’t worth shit and the answer to every question was basically “training mode”, “read s-kill”, “use the search button”. Some may argue that the hostile attitudes bred better players, which may be true, but it also wasn’t very helpful in growing the scene, at least not via the internet. There were people who went out of their way to help new players but they in the minority IMO.

The scene was helped massively by the spread high-speed internet, growth of YouTube, and streaming. The turning points IMO were Devastation 2k9 (a good quality weekend long stream dedicated to FGs? Unheard of!). Then there was the SBO Qualifiers @ Denjin. So much hype (I believe in Mike Ross!). People’s attitudes to new games, technologies and players started changing slowly (for the better IMO) after these events. Sites like EventHubs took advantage of the explosive growth of the FGC and started <strike>copying</strike> providing content to help new people (to be fair, they didn’t start out as a SFIV-centric site), and pretty soon things snowballed. With sites like YouTube and Justin.tv/Ustream, the helpful minority suddenly had access to a much larger audience, and they sort of became the new faces of the FGC.
You present something good like it was bad.

What do you have today? Every random Joe’s opinion is “equal” which makes it hard to find VALID information, people are too lazy to use the search function which clutters forums and people retain a scrubby mentality that the S-Kill articles were supposed to remedy. (Like how zoning “kills the hype” when zoning is the very essence of 2D fighting games, rather than long autopilot combos.)

Old SRK (and I mean way prior to 2009) had some bad things about it, but these were not the things you mentioned at all.
It’s 100x easier to find information about games FGs now. Not just on SRK, but the whole internet. The one thing that is still the same is that the only people who care about what scrubs think are scrubs themselves, and people on internet forums who do nothing all day but moan about what scrubs think. And every random Joe’s opinion is certainly not equal. The only thing that’s changed is that when someone says something stupid, you don’t get 10 pages of pointless posts telling him to STFU or how scrubs are ruining SRK.
A forum’s policy is not what “grows the scene” nor hinders it. For every guy in here you have at least 100 on Stream chats, Youtube, Eventhubs, Capcomunity etc. anyway. It’s full of dumb and you can’t prevent it, which brings me to my next point.

Finding information is easy on the internet. But finding GOOD information is a different thing altogether. Someone who is new on the field has no idea what is true and what is false. Not much different from gaining knowledge about the world around you from news broadcasts and papers. If you want better info, you must look for more niche places to get it from.

You are posting this on a website that updates us on Maximilian’s daily rambling… If this is not the elevation of mediocrity then I don’t know what is.
It’s true. Most back then went to tournaments except for most of GD. Now most don’t go to tournaments, top players rarely post here, and everyone with an internet connection believes their opinion on the game is right even if they have never won anything.

I like what SRK has built, but back then it was a better competitive scene and thus the info was much more refined and battle-tested.

Valid info isn’t difficult to find once you get used to filtering out some people’s shitty opinions.

It’s a natural thing to have to do when you get a lot of newer players here.

i wish there was an invite/VIP only SRK subforum, that would be read-only for everyone else

would love to read more discussions between actual top players.
Except most of the players who can post stuff worth reading are already posting in the forums anyway. Alot of these newer players on the scene are just as bad as their stream monster fanbases when it comes to posting shit.
