As far as story telling goes in Fighting Games, which one do you like best?

Techromancer had the best presentation i’d seen for a fighting games story for YEARS. BB might be the first to officially top it.

Other great fighting game presentations. Rival Schools and especially Project Justice. The way that shit unfolded was like an interactive comic book. The way Burning Batsu stormed was epic.

Guilty Gear and Blazblue

**Street Fighter

Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting

King of Fighters

Samurai Shodown

Darkstalkers**

I dunno - my main problem in KoF is that the characters somehow change their personality abruptly, the arcs do strange things, etc.

Like who?

I give bonus points to any game that goes out of it’s way to establish characters and storyline. Rival Schools/ Project Justice was indeed awesome as OP suggests.

Also, Weaponlord was real serious. When Korr kills Bane without knowing it’s his brother, it got intense.

Also, an unappreciated KOF game in terms of storytelling was KOF 2006 (Maximum Impact 2, as mentioned above). I recommend fans of KOF to pick it up just to watch all the character specific pre fight intros, character specific win poses, character specific loading screen voice overs, and all the character cut scenes/endings. It’s the most human the characters have felt since…ever.

Also, without Andy around to make her act stupid, Mai is allowed to come off as kinda…cool.

Remember when Paul was relevant?

Tekken has unfortunately degenerated into the Jin show. Dude. Never. Loses.

I can’t get into the story if the characters aren’t at least appealing, so characters>>>>>story imo…

KOF is my fav (It pratically branches off into everything SNK ever made, that’s pretty boss imo )
Rival Schools
Guilty Gear (great characters with even greater story to tell)
Street Fighter Alpha - 3S (I think SFIV killed it tho’)
Fatal Fury, Geese is a fucking don
Tekken
Soul Calibur (SC4 was mess)
Melty Blood (do I even need to explain)
Blazblue (It’s kinda hit and miss right now, but it has Litchi so that’s good enough for me :wgrin:)

battle fantasia

Thats one of the big issues I would think, you need to keep coming up with reasons for fan favourite characters to return again and again to fight in a big tournament, eventually you are going to be scraping that barrell

Seconding The Last Blade series. The story itself was pretty good, but it was the atmosphere from the background and music that really made it shine.

Story: King of Fighters
Story Telling: Anything with a visual novel style story mode, e.g. Guilty Gear, Blazblue, Battle Fantasia. I’d like to see Capcom and SNK fighters attempt something like this, rather than just a quote at the end of the match or some piss poor ending sequence.

Agreed. Steve Fox’s dad will never be revealed. He will never have dialogue with Nina beyond him staring at her then she says “Show me whatcha got”. He’s Lei Wulong-tier now.

I started with Tekken 3 so, no.

Oh wait he DID beat the first form of Orge. But then he left and Jin finished the job and got all the credit. WTF? I wanna see the tournament bracket for this shit. For that to be feasible, Orge himself(itself) would have had to be in the tourney like a regular participant and not waiting at the end. And is Ogre really the type of person/creature that would register? My left arm hurts…

Super story mode ftw  So it does count!

LOL, I remember reading a story FAQ by someone who was trying to tie all the endings together by explaining that everyone beat the first form of Ogre.

I kinda hate in KoF how characters fluctuate, like Athena and such.

I really love how RS/PJ treats the characters. You actually know that they develop instead of having the same schtick after a game (compare Batsu to say… E. Honda, as someone gave example earlier).

Lmao, SFA3-style.

The funny thing in sf4 is that there are 26 seths with one of them being playable so there are 25 playable characters. So it is not far off to believe every character beat 1 seth. I hope this is true so that Dan beat someone without them throwing the fight (cough Sagat).

As I think someone mentioned earlier, the problem with GG’s storyline (besides things never being resolved) was that a lot of it had to be obtained from Drama CDs, and other non-game content. It is nice that ArcSys put the effort they did into fleshing out the world and characters, but I would’ve preferred all the info to be available in the games themselves, a direction I hope the BlazBlue series takes.

And speaking of BlazBlue, I hate time loops.

That site is worth the read.

That site speaks so much truth on so many topics.

The moment I saw the Sonic 3 picture at the top of Guide Dang It I knew tha site was bookmark worthy.

I like Fatal Fury’s story the best. It’s pretty straight forward, doesnt take itself too seriously, and is pretty tame and believable compared to most. Only problem with it was the whole Jin Twin/Scrolls of Immortality thing in FF3, and probably Geese surviving more falls than the Mishimas could ever hope. It’s not novel quality of course but it’s pretty damn good.

KOF has good characters but that’s about it. A lot of the KOF original characters like Kyo, Heidern, Rugal, Goenitz, K’, etc have interesting stories. But my main gripe is that outside of the main characters not too many people serve a purpose aside from fanservice. In the Orochi Saga, a lot of characters were explored and things were interesting. A lot of the characters had a role somewhere and it wasnt all Iori/Kyo. NESTS Saga comes around the story starts going down hill because few teams in each game had relevence. 99 was K’ Team/Ikari/Iori+Kyo, 2000 was K’ Team/Ikari/Benimaru Team/Kula, 2001 was K’/NESTS. Not to mention the games adding characters like May Lee, Hinako, and Jhun Hoon who were only filler characters. The story itself on the other hand was interesting with the whole clone thingy and K9999 had probably the best backstory of any character in KOF. Overall it was still pretty interesting but had a lot of flaws. Ash Saga rolls around and it’s basically Orochi Saga Pt.2 with a gay antagonist. 2003 made it look like it was gonna be kinda like the NESTS Saga where few teams were relevant. Ash being the “villian” was an ok twist but XI comes around and its story is… damn near all fan service. Shit revolves around Ash/Kyo/Iori only. Duo Lon/Ron story was thrown out the window, K’ Team doesnt do anything like they kinda hinted at with the 2003 ending, Elizabeth does nothing when she was supposed to be Ash’s foil like Iori to Kyo or Kula to K’, and why does Heidern have a bigger role than most of the other playable characters? All he does is hold a fucking conference and shit gets more interesting than the Iori/Kyo story has ever been, but it still gets overshadowed by what SNK thinks of as their greatest creations. Also, they need to start having Adel do something. Him and Rock get these interesting stories about their fathers and they never really get followed up on. If you wanna count MI2 for Rock, shit was cliche and stupid and shouldnt matter.

tl;dr it started good then gets real bad around XI. Hopefully they can pick up from there.
