Art's Hobbies - DIY Acrylic Cases

Art,

I already have my two sticks pretty well planned out, but I have a couple of questions. First of all, if I want art on the bottom panel facing both up and down, what’s the best way to make that happen? Second, do you have any idea what color options are going to cost yet?

Very happy to see the purple. Do you have any estimation on the cost of dark purple case? I know you don’t have final figures yet, but I am just curious as to the price range we are currently looking at for a dark purple case.

yeah i dunno shit about sticks and parts and whatnot… i was just wondering if having 2 different output sets (PS3/360) would effect my having to get new Sanwa or Seimitsu buttons… like if i get an acrylic case and swap out my buttons in favor of ones that will fit, will they still function and put out the same for both systems?

If I’m understanding you right, then yes, you should be able to drop the 30mm buttons in just fine.
Push buttons are just binary input; they aren’t complex enough to have compatibility problems across different PCB’s/systems/input receivers… The button you choose is just by preference and need.
In short, all the pushbuttons just say Y/N, and as long as you’re wiring them right, there will be no compatibility issues.

First time poster, felt compelled to comment. Totally staking you out, Art. I really want this DIY case to set myself up with an all-out guts orgy of colors and toehoez.

^right on thanx for the answer

They’re simply switches that complete an electrical circuit when pressed. Nothing about their design and function should indicate some sort of incompatibility with a specific console.

Really looking forward to this. Hope the release is soon!

Can we still expect august?

TEK-Case UPDATES, and other things of interest.

Hey guys! I’m happy to say that the Tek-Cases are right around the corner. As I’ve mentioned, A LOT of work needed to be done on the website to accommodate a lot of options to building YOUR case. I’ve been pretty much up by 20hr increments last several days to get orders out and use every bit of time to develop the “Case Builder”. I’ll get more into that in just a bit.

Here’s what to expect within a week and a half to two weeks.

  • Tek-Cases Version 1A and 1B go on sale along with various accessories (Side Decors, artwork prints / covers all around the case)

  • I will also be carrying NOVUS #1 Plastic Polish bottles, should you want to keep your cases (and other plexi/plastic products) in top clean shape. There will also be a Microfiber bundle.

  • Adding some etched Plexi Seimitsu insert items. (If there’s not enough time for everything this may be delayed by a week)

  • Some new Mirror Color plexi should be arriving next week. Mirrored Purple, Green and Blue.

  • Will be posting up instructional videos. First videos will be based on the Tek-Cases.

  • New pre-etched dustwashers. Similar to the Arrowed dustwashers, but with punch & kick symbols.

So as you can see, there’s a very full plate ahead for me. I’ll sleep when it’s all done, lol.

So more on the Case Builder. I’ve decided to give early access to the case builder so you guys can take a look at all the options and get an idea what you want. The builder is made from scratch and is still in the BETA phase as I still have testing to do, but you can pretty much expect that to be the format of it. I welcome feedback and bug reports to help me speed up the completion.

Although, at this time it’s preferred that any feedback on the case builder be reports of bugs rather than improvement suggestions. I understand there’s more I can do to make things simpler and easier… but please also understand that with the amount of time I have left to work on this, any further “convenience” options will have to be added later. Right now it’s just working out bugs and rolling it out.

Here are the links:

TEK Case Series 1B: (This version uses the support layer rather than the top border)

Hope you guys find this useful =).

Furthermore, you can now access the PSD templates for the TEK-Case in my download section.

Alrighty! Back to more work. I will catch you guys later! Thanks everyone!

It’s not that I’m holding back from releasing them due to some marketing plan. As you can see from my last post, the amount of work that needs to go into updating the site to allow for a wide range of customization is huge. The case builder needed to be made, and I had to do it from scratch. At least I’m a web apps developer so it’s within my ability to make it, but it still requires a lot of time. Adding that I still need to fulfill current orders and other things, it’s a huge list of things to do =)

haha, I LOL’d to “Life 3 Activates”. Yep, the order is still in. I’m just waiting for the supplies to get here. I’m really hoping I can pick them up next week. Grrr.

The current case designs are meant to fit Japanese parts, specifically 30mm and 24mm buttons. HAPP buttons are also too tall to fit in this version. If you are ok with Japanese buttons then the wiring pretty much works the same way as HAPP buttons. Think of the buttons as an ON/OFF light switch… there are many designs out there… but they all do one thing in the same way… turn a light on or off using the same wiring/circuits.

You can just order two Bottom panel artworks. Then just sandwich the two (one facing down, one facing up). That’s what I did for my Iron Man sample. And color option costs can be reviewed in the Beta case builder, linked in my last post, or on the front page of my site.

You can see the costs in the case builder. I would say that not every piece has to be Purple to bring out a nice Purple case effect, and to save a few bucks. For example, the front piece can remain clear so you can see nameplate. The back piece may also remain clear to contrast the name plate as a background layer. May not be the best to explain in text, but I will talk about this in my upcoming video tutorial which will give a good idea of how to experiment with colors on certain areas.

I’m honored to have your first post in my thread. And thanks for helping out =)

Close! I had to push it another week or so to get everything done. Thanks for your patience!

Awesome work. Looking forward to it.

Cool!
Colored Mirror.

You didn’t have to do everything of TEK-CASE Builder did you?

Ah, such is the curse of a 16 letter handle.

As a result, I must ask: do name plates support non-roman script?

As in, could I pop in say… “???”?

Ah sorry, at this point only a Stencil type font can be used for the name plate. Keep in mind it’s just like cutting out letters using a stencil to keep the letters intact. For example, if you cut an “A” out, you’re gonna miss the center area because nothing is holding it in place. While technically your characters should be fine for this type of cut, I just can’t open up too many options on this because of the cutting restrictions and prep time. Perhaps later down the road I can do this on a more custom bases, but for now the Stencil type fonts will be used. Sorry.

EDIT: If there’s enough request to expand the char limit, I could add a couple more letters if need be… It’s just preferred that the letterings aren’t too small in the cut so the pieces will be clear, and small corners aren’t melted on to each other during the cutting process.

Thanks!

Every single thing was done by me…

zzzzz

Oh btw, I got your package. Soon as all this stuff is done I’ll get back to you on it =)

Roger that. Well, not all is lost. I’ll just throw in a few alternatives.

It’s the day(/night) we’ve all been waiting for!

Oh, and huge props on the purple mirror. That’s mega sexy.

Hmm, I perfectly understand the logic, but I wonder - how difficult would it be to do etching verse cut-out for that portion…so you could get like a custom Name done on say…ugh…purple plexi lulz for that part?

Also you said it’s right around the corner (case release)…

  1. Your going to get an onslaught of orders, are they going to take substantially longer to put out than your typical ‘10 business days’?
  2. Will there be a delay for purple plexi and purple mirror plexi as options?

I can’t wait till lunch, I want to tyr out the builder…see how hard it would be to make my Cassette tape (I want to make Raekwon’s “Only built For cuban Links” - purple tape - http://synamatiq.files.wordpress.com/2009/09/purple-tape.jpg )

I am sure this has already been asked, but… how about support for adding in a DB-15 connector? It could be in the same place where the optional wire slot is cut from the bottom in the very same way, just a wider cut and with screw holes on the sides. Having a USB-port for consoles and DB-15 for supergun usage would be ideal to me.
