Ark: Survival of the Fittest, the recently launched standalone spinoff to Ark: Survival Evolved, comes to PlayStation 4 this summer, developer Studio Wildcard announced today.

The esports-centric survival game will be released for PS4 on July 19 through the system’s beta program. Survival of the Fittest is described as a “multiplayer online survival arena,” and it focuses on offering a Hunger Games-esque multiplayer competition. It was first released on PC in March as a free-to-play spinoff of Survival Evolved, which is a more traditional online survival game.

Both games remain in development on all platforms. Survival Evolved is available on PC and Xbox One, with a PS4 version set for release in June. An Xbox One release of Survival of the Fittest hasn’t yet been detailed, but we’ve followed up with the developer to find out its plans for that platform.

Survival of the Fittest retains many of the same elements of Survival Evolved, such as crafting, building bases, and taming dinosaurs. But it differs in that it pits up to 72 players against each other in a battle that takes place within an always-shrinking circle referred to as the “ring of death.”

In addition to the main online mode, there’s also split-screen and LAN support, as well as an offline training mode which might eventually see the addition of AI-controlled bots** to compete against, according to a PlayStation Blog post.

Studio Wildcard will also offer the **Survivor League **on PS4, a sort of monthly tournament that offers real-world cash prizes.

It’s only been a month since the release of ARK: Survival of the Fittest as a stand-alone game on PC, and already thousands and thousands of people are playing it. Complete with cash prizes, invitational tournaments, and of course, dinosaurs as far as the eye can see, Survival of the Fittest was built from the ground up to be full of competitive action. And we’re bringing it all to PS4 players on July 19!
Spawning almost naked with a group of hostile opponents, it’s do-or-die in what we’re calling a Multiplayer Online Survival Arena (The big hats keep telling me to push the acronym until it becomes a thing), where you use your wits, your cunning, a little bit of brute force, a hatchet, an anvil, some arrows, a triceratops, a few guns, an explosive or two, a couple of stegosaurus, a sniper rifle, and — in dire cases — your own poop to be the last tribe standing when the final curtain is drawn.

Tame dinosaurs, craft armor, forge weapons, harvest resources, build bases, make friends, and slaughter some “Bobs” (ARK’s term for newcomers), in what is one of the deepest combat arenas to ever hit PlayStation. The breadth and depth of strategy, and potential avenues for victory, are enormous, and we’re working insanely hard to make sure that no matter what approach you take, you can come out on top if you’re clever.

The PS4 has actually given us an interesting opportunity to bring a different kind of ARK — and a unique type of game — to the platform. Nobody has yet brought a Multiplayer Online Survival Arena (MOSA) to PlayStation, and we thought it was kind of a shame that the space was being neglected.

One of the fantastic things about multiplayer console gaming is the huge pool of players all playing on the same hardware, which make things like matchmaking and competitive gameplay far more fun. This allows us to make a lot of optimizations for these players not just in terms of performance, but also in terms of gameplay; there’s no question of whether a user will be playing on lower settings for better frames per second or to remove some essential gameplay element.

In addition to the fact that it’s untackled ground, we’re really looking forward to some of the unique elements of console gameplay: splitscreen, local LAN play, and we’re even looking at introducing bots which you can play against offline to challenge yourself, or to practice, or maybe just to see the world that ARK takes place in. Whichever way you want to approach the game, online or offline, with friends, or against bitter rivals, it should all lead up to one thing:

The Survivor League.

That’s right, we’re bringing the Survivor League to PS4 as well, and that means cash prizes for the best of the best every single month. In addition to these prizes, you’ll also qualify yourself for our invitationals, and for future events that we are planning. We want players to be able to get some return on the investment that they make by playing our game every day.

The Survivor League will track the top players in every available game mode and automatically display their rankings on our official site, so the world can see that you are in fact the cream of the crop.

The very first Multiplayer Online Survival Arena ever created is coming to consoles!! My tribe is going to kick so much ass!! Though they really should update the models, well at least have good face presets to choose from, add a lot of good long hairstyles, I mean really, Fashion ARK should be a thing. If even DSIII it’s possible to make good faces and have some decent hairstyles, so can ARK, I think it has face sliders. I don’t care if they make more hairstyles and as better face options as DLC, it would make things much better (and before people bring up the 1st person only matches argument, you can see yourself on the holographic inventory/status screen thingy, and other players can see you, so looks and aesthetics still count.

And before people bring up “Ah, I prefer Survival Evolved”, be aware that Survival of the Fittest has better survival elements and a better model for survival than SE, which boils down to people complaining about base building flooding the map, and respawns reducing the incentives to survive,
and the world just being stagnant in SE, BECAUSE there’s no immediate persistent purpose that keeps players engaged with the FULL intensity of survival every second, like they are SOTF.

SOTF has all the intensity and cooperative incentives of survival, thanks to no respawns, and a more intense objective to be the last tribe/survivor standing. SOTF has all the survival elements intact, so contrary to its arena title, it’s not your typical arena shooter.

While PVE fans like myself don’t often get hyped for PVP, the PVP side of ARK is actually what optimizes the entire survival experience much better than the normal sandbox that has no winners. So in SOTF case, I actually find it to be more valuable than the SE version in multiple standpoints.

I’m surprised they announced SOTF for July 2016, that’s much much more awesome than the rumored 2017 launch. Yes it’s early access but considering fans already pumped 100s of hours in older builds, there’s already a very playable masterpiece there.

The Xbox One fans are loving ARK so much, it’s within the top 5 most popular X1 games and more popular than even the PC version

Haven’t read what SOTF in July means for Survival Evolved on PS4. Maybe that’s still coming in June.

though even if SOTF comes first, in my opinion we are getting the better of the two games. 200% better.
