Yea I grew up in southern AZ and so many of my friends parents had no idea how to speak any English. These families don’t speak English at home they speak Spanish, you know in much the same way the only person at the family run Chinese Restaurant that can speak English is the 12 year old running the register at the front counter.
theres so much more wrong with this than just ‘foreign accents can’t teach english class’.
i like how they threw this little gem in there:
schools will lose state funding if they offer any courses that “promote the overthrow of the U.S. government”
don’t be inciting discord about the US government or you’re school will cease to exist.
The whole law is open to selective abuse.
Are you going to ban say a heavy Scottish or Irish accent from teaching, or are they deemed sufficiently white and western for peoples liking? How about a heavy French or German accent? Or is this just for Mexicans and Chinese?
What about a thick mid-west accent? I don’t think the Queen’s English can be accurately portrayed if you happen to have a heavy Southern drawl.
Accents exist all over this world. There are many parts of English speaking countries where the accent is so heavy and thick that the English is very hard to understand.
…
I want to attend a lecture on how new quantum mechanical theory affects our understanding of classical model astrophysics, given by someone who only speaks Greek, so that at the very end I can stand up and do .
…
My sentiments exactly.
As fucked up as this is going to sound, but I completely agree. Teachers with heavy, thick as fuck accents shouldn’t be teaching complicated classes like math and computer. Worst experience I’ve had was an Indian computer teacher. It got so bad that I eventually had to drop out early because I knew I was going to fail the course because I, and ton of others, simply could not understand what the fuck he was saying. It wasn’t like his accent was funny like Russel Peters where you can sorta still understand. Shit was undecipherable.
the thing about that is, kids who don’t speak any English won’t be in the same classes as those who do, at least in the states I’ve lived there are always separate classes for kids learning English as a second language and those learning it as their first, and in that case, wouldn’t you want the teacher to have an accent, so those children can better understand them? also, what’s wrong with the kids of today having an accent?
I hope all those targeted immigrants don’t come and flood canada. We don’t want u here.
Assuming that’s the case in Arizona (I’ve got no clue), if you’re learning a new language, I don’t see how having an accent would help the student. If I ::shutter:: went to France…having a person from Canada teaching me French wouldn’t really be a boon over having somebody from France teach me.
As for having an accent…there’s nothing wrong with it, but there’s a nationwide surplus of English teachers (from what I’ve heard/read). Why not opt for the people who don’t have accents?
Love how Canadians say Americans are bigots, but they all pull this kind of shit.
::sigh::
How long have you hated America?
because having an accent doesn’t make you any less intelligent or qualified in the field
and my point with the accent being helpful wasn’t for their accent in English but their accent in the native language
because clearly a child who doesn’t speak English is still going to be using quite a bit of Spanish in order to learn English, and wouldn’t it make more sense to have a teacher who is more fluent and articulate in their native language? because that’s the whole point of this law apparently in the first place
But if people can’t understand you it doesn’t matter how qualified you are.
Here’s what the OP put in his post…
As ThinkProgress notes, the Tucson Unified School District’s popular Mexican-American studies department is the target here. The state superintendent charges that the program exhibits “ethnic chauvinism.”
Kinda like when i was young growing up, our social studies taught us how the Indians were savages & us white people were showing them the right way to live. We had a great Thanksgiving & we live happily ever after…So pretty much the classes here are the ones that are not covered in our history books, kinda like Black History…
As for the heavy accent, the ones who will be most effected will be the teachers who are teaching ESL (English Second Language) to mostly spanish kids. They really need to get rid of these Mexicans, i mean it doesn’t make sense to have a person who teaches English know spanish teaching mexican kids right.
Arizona is sure going hard on these Mexicans…Im guessing some Mexican must have done a shitty job in one of the Republican’s lawn haha…
you guys know this stuff provides serious lols for us peoples that are not over there?
this is the kind of crap i can look forward to in twenty years with all the new eu states anyways.
lol.
How long have you not had a sense of humor?
noobs the only language you need to know to learn math, is greek. pi, delta, epsilon, lambda, phi, alpha, beta, gamma, and so on. all the teacher needs to do is write equations on the board, that’s it.
as for this travesty of a law, i lol. i totally understand the rationale behind it. if only china would get on the same page. in china, parents only hire english tutors who are white. doesn’t matter if they are german, russian, or some other foreigner with a shitty accent. they will get a tutoring job. a guy like me who actually speaks english but can also speak chinese is at a disadvantage. stupid moronic idiotic chinese parents, discriminating against their own kind.
Shit yeah we’re serious. About Super.
These laws? No comment. I’m not very political.
Kind of Ironic and sad at the same time. But I’ve tried learning Greek at a Community college by someone who was American and not Greek. So guess what happen when I talked to my pops on the phone?
He said wtf did you learn that broken Greek from… Go to Church if you want to learn our language.
Ok so if you could get through that babble long story short a person native to that country of origin should teach it’s language.
It’s actually not uncommon for overseas language schools to only hire people whose native language is English. Doesn’t matter what level you’re at because your English will never be as good as a native speaker’s and is naturally subject to ungrammatical utterances (unless you live in the country for a really long time, then it’s arguable). I kind of agree with this to be honest, assuming we’re talking about ‘how-to-speak’ kind of classes and not Shakespeare/writing essays about ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ kind of classes. Then this is just retarded.
I see where you’re coming from in that it’s really hard to draw a line between a ‘good’ and ‘bad’ accent, but since this school’s in Arizona, I think it would be best if they learned how to speak standard American English, no? That would be most relevant for a person going about their daily affairs in Arizona I’d think.
Mind you this might be all irrelevant anyways since most foreigners don’t even learn their English in school, but from their friends. Hence all of the “yo guy what da fuck you lookin’ at” type of shit you hear from a lot of new immigrants these days.
