Are the terms "n00b" and "scrub" tossed around too frequently?

i use team scrub in marvel

I can’t believe how much response this is getting… There have been a lot of productive replies (not limited to the one’s that agree), while others have been pointless or just failed attempts at humor. Either way, I’m glad that I got people thinking and sharing. But I still feel like there is a sense of animosity in the air.

One thing I disagree with is the redefining of the two words. Those terms are completely useless and need to be restricted to isolated cases. There is a different class of players who are between “n00b” and “scrub.” I’m talking about the guys who know what they’re doing but aren’t as good as the rest of the people they play with and don’t complain about it. Invent a new word for them, lol.

The other thing I wanted to add was the example of two players who just play Ryu VS Ryu all day. They probably don’t even what they’re doing, but as long as they are enjoying playing Street Fighter that’s a great thing. When one of these guys goes to an arcade and gets beaten, he might be termed a n00b or scrub, but that’s wrong. Just because they don’t spend a few hours a week getting good does not make them any less of a player. People are allowed to enjoy Street Fighter on all levels!

And I also agree with the concept of a “relative” scrub, in the sense that compared to a top player everybody is a scrub. However, as long as the word scrub has a negative connotation, it is being misused. There needs to be a term to define players who just aren’t as good as everybody else. More importantly, there needs to be a mutual respect for those players.

I could add some more, but right now I don’t feel that I need to. Thanks again to the guys who added something productive and enlightening!

Like an asshole in D Block at Rikers.
Like Emeril’s greens on vegetarian dish days.
Like the word “cracker” on Def Comedy Jam.

But that is because I live with a janitor who constantly misses the first B in ‘boob’ when trying to google, “Big Boob Bitches”.

The term for the person not as good as everyone else is average. “Nothing spectacular”…

There are other variations…but average is the one thsat best fits it… I think the problem is when casual gamers and hardcore gamers mix…hardcore gamers need to be with hardcore gamers…casual gamers need to be with casual gamers…

Problem arise when the two mix for the most part…They both have different philosphies…

The age old playing to win vs. playing for fun…

People who are just bad at the game are known as: The Wack the aura surrounding them is The Wackness and is nowhere near as detrimental as scrub but is just bad.

i usually jokingly use the term scrub, but i consider someone a scrub when they are playing a game that they are not really trying to get better at, and then have complaints after the fact. like, yo, just fucking play more, or ask questions. scrub is definitely a mentality. noob is just not knowing your shit, but still wanting to learn and get better, like most people have said, but i dont like saying noob really, it sounds stupid, so i just call motherfuckers scrubs.

basically, if someone is calling you a scrub, theyre joking a bit, or you really are that pathetic, that you are no longer a new player to them, but a bum who wont achieve shit in the game. if we’re just gonna speak on gamer scrubs. if you dont like being called a scrub, then you better work on not being one, until then, enjoy your verbal abuse

they r being redifined because ppl will call any sucky player a “nub” or “scrub” whether or not they really r one
and then another person will see how its being used, and interpret the definition based on how he is seein it being used (improperly)

they misuse the words because they really could care less bout the person they r insulting

seriously…
who goes, “d00d u suck! now lemmie waste 10 mins tryin to examine the complexities of ur situation, so i can determine whether to call u a nub or a scrub or asshat or dumfuk”?

seriously o__o

I don’t understand why people don’t just cut the shit after they win. You know, you don’t have to tell a shit player “GG” if it really wasn’t or whatever, but most likely if this guy isn’t bitching at you he’s trying to get better. I mean, if you’ve ALREADY BEAT THE GUY you don’t need to make fun of him, it just becomes a pissing contest.

There are a lot of players on HDRemix that I just straight up murder, in a 10, 20, and sometimes over 30 games they couldn’t get one on my Honda. I’m not gonna message the guy “HAHA YOU LOST EZ PZ NEWB LOSER” because that over time breaks the player down and he starts to think “Man I do suck, I am gonna stop playing this crap” and never gets better. Rather than if you message the guy something like “Hey man ggs but you should work on your execution a bit so you can fuck me up next time” you might 1) make a friend, and 2) get the guy to hang around and become good competition.

Some of you guys say it weeds out the community, but I’ve seen too many nice, determined kids turned away by the dick attitudes of some in the community. If you’ve beaten the guy, and beaten him easily there’s no reason to add insult to injury. Our scene will be growing quickly soon with newbs and scrubs alike, we WANT to keep the newbs around so Street Fighter wont DIE again, right?

Unless the guy messages me with “cheap” or something, then it’s OK to say “go fuck yourself” or whatever. I honestly have not received hate mail on PSN yet… maybe because I tick oicho and don’t fireball? =) As if tick oicho is any less “cheap” haha.

This is a good point…it all depends on who you are dealing with…

If you are dealing with someone that wants to learn…you teach them…

If you are dealing with someone that complains or needs a reality check…
YOU HUMBLE THEM…

It all depends on the situation.

Wrong.

A scrub is a guy who thinks he’s fly and is also known as a “bustah”.

You are all wrong.
A scrub is a guy that can’t get no love from me.
Sitting in the pasenger side of his best friend’s ride, trying to holler at me.

No…homo.

which is highly ironic considering the suits at Capcom would trade their souls and SRK if SFIV could put up SSBB sales numbers.

WRONG!!!

A Scrub keeps it on the down low because nobody is supposed to know.

On a contrary, some people are way too sensitive.

For example: I played with one guy, I winned most time but he wasnt exactly noob, its just because I am good at SS5sp that he lost most of time; then at one round I win with like one inch of life left BUT it still continues my winstreak, and because of that 1 inch situation I write “lol” in the chat.

Next what he stars to do is to write long posts in the chat about how I am asshole/stupid/nerd/bitch etc etc etc because I “laugh on him” while in reality I laughed at situation. Think, “lol” is just 3 letters, and its not some direct insult (like he used afterwards). Some guys really need some chill pills.

Oh and after that he ragequitted

 at scrub dictionary

I call scrubs jabronis.

lmao @ Jabronis

I agree, I definitely depends on the situation. I mean if you win and laugh at a person of course they take it as attacking their morale and see it as mocking regardless what you may want it to mean. (unless one explains themselves)

^ There’s no way to determine how a person online will act. 75% of people don’t have headsets or don’t talk, and those that do are a total crap-shot as to whether they’re actually trying to play and get better, or if they’re just fucking around. I can say with relative certainty that telling someone they suck is never a good idea if you wish to make a friend. If the person understands the game, they’ll understand they suck - being reminded of it verbally on top of the fact being pointed out by their continued defeats is never spirit-bolstering.

Though as I pointed out earlier, nice people are sometimes hard to come by. I knew people who were pretty nice in real life, but once they get online on Xbox or PC or whatever… they change significantly, becoming such obscene, rude beings they are an entirely different person. The anonymity of online gaming gives everyone a pair - it’s just a matter of who’s balls will get busted sooner.

100% Agree. The interwebz is a poor substitute for a real arcade scene because of the anonymity present. I started playing SF2 in the arcades and you could go up and ask really good players for tips without the worry of them insulting you or anything like that. I think there’s definitely a verbal minority of “players” who just feel the need to insult people online just to increase the size of their e-peen, but it’s a shame that more of the players who genuinely would and could help don’t speak up more often. Those people could really help grow the community.

People try to ask real questions on here and they get flamed. It’s no wonder the FG scene is considered niche.
