I will leave this food for thought, though:
Players of smaller games allowed this to happen by not repping their games in years previous, and making fun of other fighting game communities… If you had all tossed your chips in with the Skullgirls peeps*(whether you played or not, supporting another “actual” fighter over Melee)* during the donation drive, instead of mocking their game, you wouldn’t be in this mess today.
It brings enough people that it puts the TOs squarely in the black as opposed to barely.
Outside of that, and I mean this in all seriousness, I have not documented one net positive from having them in the community. To some extent they can be a nuissance because of their insistence.
For example, right now I’m trying to really jump start the community in El Paso. I have a place that’ll give us space for casuals in a nice air conditioned enviroment. I know some of there are smash players who also play fighting games and I wanna advertise in their circles but the chances of them wanting to take smash set ups and fuck up that spot for FGs is really high.
It isn’t that I’m against helping their community out. Anything I can do this store to make money I’m happy to because they’ve been hella nice to us in FGs. But if I let one smash set up there during the FG casual night, it’s only going to turn into 4-5 set ups all the time. But that’s the situation that these assholes forced unsuspectingly across the country. I gotta have this completely unrelated community which already has a rep for their terrible attitude (and this locally) try and give us the “But we’re a fighting game” and potentially fuck up any chance that the rest of the games get some ground for themselves.
Smashers don’t care about other games or communities AT ALL… At least an SF player will pretend to tolerate an MK set up at casual game night-- Smashers infiltrate and assimilate all the space and place unrealistic demands on TOs and hosts.
CRTs are bulky and inefficient, the scene refuses to co-mingle with other FG communities, and often segregrates itself, and a lot of the “top” players are selfish, elitist assholes who make the word “diva” look tame.
The majority of the Smash 4 people I’ve come across are okay, and quite a few actually play and respect other games, but since they can’t seem to do their own shit without big brother Melee butting in, they unfortunately get lumped together with the rest of the assholes.
They only care about their game. To them, everyone else can go screw themselves.
Look at the crowd that gathers at majors for Smash. Then look at how fast they leave their seats once Smash is over. The venue looks empty af after they leave.
Like Dick Limpus said, it’s also on the respective communities not supporting their own. Y’all niggas done goofed.
Its basically a money grab now. Gotta get them Nintendo bucks.
Why else would two smash bros games AND Pokken Tournament be included? They can’t be bothered to choose one?
Smash Bros always had their own events seperate from FGC, but now that everything is money and politics they get to shoehorn their way into everything even though they only support their own stuff for the most part.
What is next? Madden Tournaments at Evo or how about Counter Strike tournaments. I mean its all competitive right?
Is it just me? Or is the Smash community the most socially awkward of all the FGC communities? Like I’m not even trying to be funny, it seems like smashers live up to the negative gamer stereotypes more so than any other community in the FGC.
there are some people who play both or made the transition from smash to marvel/sf4, and a decent amount of smash players who do socialize with other groups and enjoy watching marvel and are admittedly p cool people.
everyone else in that community though… I guess to be fair we’ve treated them like shit for the last decade (and still do) and told them they can only be on the big evo stage if they deserve it so i guess it’s understandable they feel a little bit entitled. what other game gets turnouts like melee with zero developer support or pot bonuses and bodies everyone in a donation drive like melee?
i’m hoping evo next year is back on the strip in two adjacent hotels, one for smash and one for everything else. idc really about segregating the games but I can’t think of any other way for it to be back on the strip and that’s more important, fuck being off the strip
They can’t be because at no point where they ever a part of this community. Matter of fact, they still aren’t a part of this community. FGC tournaments are now just adding a different community to it to make money and pretending shit is honky dory. They got invited to Evo and that’ll live down as the biggest fuck up for “FGC”.
